What: Fenrir plans a surprise and gets a surprise
Rating: PG
Status: Complete

Fenrir crouched in the mouth of the cave and looked down on the village of Hogsmeade below. His eyes were narrowed and his face was set in a rictus of hate and anger. Two years. That’s how long it had taken him to recover from the injuries he’d received at the battle at Hogwarts. Or rather that was how long it had taken him to recover from the wounds, the botched attempts to heal the wounds from the half-wit healer he’d found and the efforts of the more decent healer who he’d found to repair the botched job done by the first healer.

He was healed now though. He had a lot more scars and various parts of him ached in the cold weather but he was back and as close to new as he was ever going to get. And he was going to celebrate that by reminding the wizarding world that just because they’d managed to kill the Dark Lord, it didn’t mean they got to wallow about in safety and security. He was going to give them something to fear

He glared down at a cottage near the edges of the village then the glare morphed into a savage, cruel smile that positively reeked of malice. He’d let himself be briefly glimpsed two days ago supposedly casing that cottage. Not fully but just enough to have whoever had seen him questioning and then contacting the Ministry. He’d then spent the better part of the last two days watching as the Aurors and the Capture Unit made their preparations. He’d watched them set traps and even managed to overhear a couple of them talking about the best positions to watch from.

They thought they were going to trap him. What they didn’t know is that he intended to trap them. He didn’t intend to kill all of them. That would be stupid. But he was going to take his toll before he escaped.

Because they were expecting him to attack tomorrow night. Tonight was a dry run for them. A test so they knew all their plans worked and the traps would go off as expected. Of course, what they hadn’t factored into their dry run was that he intended to attack tonight, in his human form, because he could.

He glanced over at the horizon and watched calmly as the sun slowly set. He could feel the wolf shifting under his skin, a fanciful suggestion but that’s how it felt. Tomorrow night he would run as the wolf in an isolated area. Tonight he would hunt as the man in the wizarding world.

He waited until the sun set and darkness fell then carefully crept down towards the first of the sentries. He’d been all over this place in the couple of weeks prior to his ‘casing’ of the cottage and he knew the best way to approach the first sentry.

He made his way soundlessly towards the unsuspecting Auror, moving with confidence but not hurriedly. When he was close, he stopped and crouched down, watching the Auror closely. The man was alert but relaxed, obviously confident in his abilities and not expecting anything other than a successful dry run. Fenrir grinned viciously and shifted into the best position to make his attack.

He leapt forward and just as he reached the Auror, a bright light flashed through the night, lighting up the darkness. The Auror disappeared and red light lanced out at Fenrir from several directions. He dodged one, snarling ferociously, and a second but then he was hit from three directions at one and he went down like he’d been shot.

For a moment there was silence then nearly a dozen men and women emerged from various hiding places. They moved forward warily, their wands trained on the supine werewolf.

"Bind him," snapped one of the Aurors.

Two men hurried forwards and swiftly wrapped Fenrir in ropes, turning him over with callous disregard for his well-being so they could be sure they had their target.

The Auror who’d spoken stepped forward then and looked down at the unconscious werewolf with dispassion and dislike and a hint of satisfaction. "Take him away. He’ll get his fair trial and then he’ll get justice. Finally."
