"I bet it was nice," Susan said, nodding as he explained. "It's been a long time since I've visited Wales, but I remember it had some beautiful areas. And I'm sure the not-snacking was a nice change," she added, laughing a little.
Charlie was quiet for a minute, and she wondered if she'd said something wrong. Did he realise that she was deliberately keeping Nicky away from him? She desperately didn't want to hurt his feelings by making him think that it was because she didn't trust him, when it was really because she didn't trust herself. Whatever lingering strain there was on their relationship, she knew he'd never do anything to hurt Nicky.
When he spoke finally, Susan let out a little breath. "Don't be ridiculous, Charlie," she said, nudging him lightly with her hip as she scooped food onto her plate. Wasted evening indeed.
