Hunting for Something
Date & Time: Monday, 30 December 2002
Post Type: RP
Status: Ongoing
Character(s): Hannah Abbott, Michael Corner, Isaac Cornfoot, Lisa Turpin
Location: Pendragon's Pub, then ?
Summary: Michael has a job interview. Lisa and Isaac meet for dinner.

Despite how long it had been since she had seen Michael, Hannah found that it was just as easy to talk to him as it had always been. What had started as a true job interview had turned into general conversation about what had been going on in their lives, and despite her devotion to running the best business that she could, she couldn't find it in herself to mind the informal nature of it. If not for the need to be fair, she probably would have offered him the job just based on her past experiences with him. No one could tell her that Michael Corner wasn't an upstanding sort of bloke, and she could only imagine that extended to his job ethic. Even if it didn't, she was willing to find out.

"I'm a little jealous," she continued, idly wiping down the bar as she talked. "I haven't really travelled much. Too much of a homebody, I guess, and with everything that's been happening these last months...." Hannah assumed Michael was aware of the murders and the disease that had plagued them. She hoped he was, despite having been out of the country, because it was not the sort of thing she liked discussing, and particularly in public. It was too easy for the topic to turn nasty these days.

Not to mention that she was actively trying not to think about the fact that her godson was still in St. Mungo's with no news on when he might be released. She would not think about it right now. Better to enjoy pleasant company and the knowledge that she had least trusted Isaac's replacement.

"How long have you been back? I know you mentioned it hasn't been long. It's good timing, really, with this spot opening up at the beginning of the year." Hannah pulled her wand and sent her rag cleaning along the shelves of liquor that she couldn't reach without grabbing the stepladder from the back.

When Michael had seen the advertisement for a job opening at Pendragon's and heard a couple of blokes talking about the pub and its need for a bartending replacement, he'd jumped at the opportunity. Literally. But he hadn't expected to be interviewed by an old school mate.

Hannah Abbott still dazzled him with her blonde hair and easy smile. If she hadn't been as serious and all business during the first half of their interview, he might have openly asked her out for dinner. But he needed a job, and he respected Hannah's desire to put aside their friendship to ask him serious questions to make sure she didn't hire a wanker. In the last few minutes, though, she'd relaxed, and her smile came faster and easier.

Michael relaxed on the bar stool. "Days," Michael answered. "Not even a week. But I've taken up with Turpin. Lisa Turpin, you remember her, yeah? We're getting a flat together. It's all starting to come together."

Hannah opened her mouth to comment on Michael's short time in town when the name he mentioned surprised her. "Lisa? Yeah, I remember her. Or, well, not really from school, but she's in here quite a bit." Not that she'd really talked to the former Ravenclaw much, other than small talk. She'd just seen Lisa's face...and she could have sworn there was something going on between her and Isaac. She instinctively glanced toward the kitchen and saw that the wizard himself had returned from putting away all of the glasses she'd given him.

She looked away. It was none of her business. She was interviewing a potential new bartender and catching up with an old friend, and she'd keep it that way. It wasn't as if she didn't have enough going on in her life to start speculating about other people's relationships. "I think I remember her saying she lives around here? Were you two friends back in school?" Lisa hadn't been in the DA, but they were both Ravenclaws, so Hannah thought it was likely.

Hannah glanced over at a big bloke walking out of the kitchen. He looked to be the hulking sort who probably grunted more than he spoke words. Michael could imagine he crushed beer bottles with his hands. Although he also looked like the type who could model for football gear. A sliver of jealousy rose up for a brief second before it dissipated. Michael looked down at his thin fingers and softer skin. He'd sometimes wished to be more of the dashing, athletic type.

"Yeah, she lives in Magnolia Manor. Turpin and I were and still are the best of mates. She's the best bird I know and I couldn't be more pleased to be sharing a flat with her. Not only is she brilliant, she's also easy on the eyes." He laughed playfully. "She's the whole package. Who wouldn't want to live with her?"

"Oh, great, then you are nearby," Hannah said with a smile. She resisted the urge to look at Isaac, once again reminding herself that it wasn't any of her business. "Walking distance, even, if you feel the need. So never an excuse for being late for work, right?" She said this last with a tease, but she made sure her expression conveyed that she was also serious about it as an offer for a job. She'd tried to make herself seriously consider her options, but the truth was that she'd long since decided the position was Michael's.

She reached under the counter and pulled out a roll of parchment, then slid it across to him. "I'll just need all of this filled out and returned to me before you start. Would you be available to start on the second? I'd offer up tomorrow, but we've already had the other bartenders volunteer for the extra hours because of the holiday pay bump. So right after the holiday is when I'll need someone. Schedules change weekly, but we're pretty flexible about working around days you might need off."

Michael grinned, sat up straighter, and found himself nodding as Hannah talked. "I have an internal clock that's always kept me on time," he said with a grin. "Maybe it's my Ravenclaw nature, all that thoughtfulness bit. But, I also loathe being late for anything. It's a pet peeve, so you have no worries there." Although Michael's musical inclination came from a free-spirited nature that permeated his entire being, he still had another side of his brain that worked hard and took responsibility serious, especially given the situation. He needed money and he wanted to stick around.

He reached out to grab the paperwork from Hannah and said, "Turpin would also skin me if I let you down..." The big bloke made eye contact with Michael, and unless Michael misread his lips, the bloke mouthed, What the fuck?. And then he made a straight line for Michael.

"Well, it's good to know that you'll have several strong women on your back making sure you do your job," Hannah said with a laugh, truly pleased that this interview had worked out as well as it had. As much as they would all miss Isaac, her instincts told her that Michael would fit in well with the group, and that their customers would appreciate his particular brand of charm.

She felt more than saw the figure approaching them, and this time she did let herself turn to look at Isaac. It was hard to make out his expression exactly, but she didn't think it looked particularly happy. Then again, he didn't exactly look upset, either, so perhaps she was reading into things too much. She mentally chastised herself for seeking distracting drama and smiled up at him. "How does it feel to have the last shift finished? You're just in time to meet your replacement, actually." She flashed a smile and gestured at Michael. "Isaac, this is an old friend of mine, Michael Corner. Michael, this is Isaac Cornfoot. As of today, we're officially losing him to the Falmouth Falcons."

Hannah dipped her head to glance under the counter again, and this time she came up with a small bag. She handed it to Isaac. "Last day's wages and your share of the tips. Hopefully you'll drop in for a visit soon, let us all know how it's going?"

Isaac finished putting away the last stack of polished glasses for Hannah, and he'd checked to make sure the bar was stocked and organized. Hannah was talking with a bloke Isaac supposed would be his replacement. Isaac could tell from Hannah's semi-relaxed posture and her smile that she either knew the bloke or she'd already decided he had the job.

Isaac turned a bottle of Firewhiskey label out when he heard the name Turpin. He glanced at them and heard the bloke say he lived with Lisa. What the fuck? Isaac looked away and grabbed for a towel. He had to be hearing things. Lisa wasn't living with this prick. He didn't even know him, so there was no way—

He said Lisa's name again, and with the way the bloke was grinning, Isaac felt the irrational impulse to pummel him. Without thinking, he walked straight toward them. Hannah smiled and introduced Isaac to Michael Corner, his replacement. Just when Isaac opened his mouth to ask for Corner to clarify his earlier statements, Hannah handed him a bag of money. Visiting? He assumed he'd have a reason to come back and visit, but if Lisa were living with someone, maybe he didn't know what the fuck was really going on...

"Thanks, Hannah," he said. "If I don't update you, someone will. Timothy isn't known for being the quiet brother."

Hannah shook her head and smiled at his mention of his brother—well, one of them—and she hoped her cheeks weren't pink. If the Cornfoot brothers had something in common, it was that they were all rather charming in their own ways, and even she seemed to be susceptible to that at times. It was a little disconcerting when she tried her hardest to stay professional at all times while inside the pub. "That he's not. But then, neither are you. So don't be a stranger, yeah?"

She gave him one last smile, and then with one last goodbye, Isaac turned and left. It was a little sad, seeing him go, after him being such a staple at Pendragon's, but she found that some changes could be a good thing. Turning back to Michael, she said, "Hungry? We've still got a bit of a break before the dinner rush, so there's time to sample a few of the menu choices and get a feel for what we offer. On me. We can finish catching up without the formality of a job interview around us."

Michael sat straighter in his chair as the bloke approached them. He felt a fair amount of friction and energy being released, and Michael tried to give off an air of calm. It was smarter to assess the situation for what was truth and what was perception. Perhaps this bloke was just hulking and having a bad day; perhaps it had nothing to do with Michael, but he couldn't help but wonder... And the death glare was a bit intense.

Hannah introduced him as Isaac Cornfoot, the former bartender. Shite. Lisa's bloke? Of all the men that Michael had imagined Lisa would pair off with...this guy? Of course he was going to play for the bloody Falcons. Which only added to his menace and his charm, if you liked muscle-packed athletes. Michael imagined Cornfoot was a beater because he looked like he'd beat the hell out of anyone at anytime.

Corn foot didn't exactly acknowledge Michael, and then he was out the door with a bag of money and Hannah staring at him like they'd been friends. How? Friendly didn't seem to fit that image. Then Hannah's eyes were back on Michael, and he tried to relax.

"Have I ever turned down food?" Michael asked, sliding off the stool. "Rumor has it that you have the best appetizers in this area. Don't disappointment me, Abbot," he added with a wink.

"Great," Hannah said with a wide smile as she stood up and motioned off to one side where they could sit at a free table. Not that there was a lack of them at the moment. Business had picked up significantly in the last month or two, but this time of day was always rather light. She handed him a menu from the stack on the bar before nodding that he should go ahead. "I'll just pop back to the kitchen and put in an order, then join you in a few minutes."

She couldn't help doing a few minor straightening tasks as she crossed the pub, and stopping briefly to ask after the few patrons they had at the moment. Ordering up a few appetisers and entrees from their rather sparse menu, she finished by dropping back behind the bar and pulling two mugs of the beer they had on tap. She wouldn't drink either—not while she was technically working, anyway—but it would be good for Michael to try them so that he could make recommendations.

Hannah rattled off the names of the brews as she sat, placing them both in front of him before taking a seat across the table. "Sylvia's a fabulous cook." She hesitated a moment, debating whether she should mention that the woman was also infected, but decided now was not the time. Susan had given her several stern looks at her reaction to that particular news, and now in light of everything happening with her godson...well, it wasn't a topic she wanted to broach if she didn't have to. Michael's training would insure that he always had solid charms, so it wouldn't be an issue. It wouldn't. "So we've established that you've travelled more in the last six months than I have in my entire life, and that you're rather fond of Lisa Turpin." She couldn't help a little teasing smile at that. "Any particular plans? Not that I wouldn't love to keep a bartender for more than a year or two, but everyone knows that's not the average person's end game."

Lisa had the volume turned up rather louder than usual as she danced her way through the kitchen, feeling unusually domestic as she chopped and otherwise prepped things for the following night's party. A quick check of the clock confirmed that she still had a few minutes before Isaac was supposed to show up, which would give her just enough time to finish up what she was doing. They hadn't specifically made any plans for the evening, other than seeing each other, so she'd grabbed some chicken and veg that would suffice for dinner if he felt like staying in.

Though, as much as she hated to admit it to herself, she was hoping he'd want to go elsewhere.

She swished her wand a little too hard at the thought and nearly sent her neatly-cut pile of carrots flying across the room. Lisa took a deep breath and straightened the spell out, forcing herself to push away the mutinous thoughts. The part she didn't want to admit was the part she'd neglected to consider when inviting Michael to crash on her couch, was that it was going to make it pretty bloody awkward to have a date over.

Date. She laughed aloud at that thought as she swiped her chopped veg into a container and put it in the refrigerator. Despite all that had happened over the last couple of weeks, it was still a mental adjustment for her. But yet...she thought of Isaac, who would no doubt be there shortly, and she felt warm all over. A hand to her cheek confirmed that she was blushing. Merlin, she was being ridiculous.

Lisa laughed again and starting putting things away. Soon, they'd be in a bigger flat that would afford them a bit more privacy, and until then she had no problem whatsoever grabbing said privacy with Isaac wherever she could find it. It hadn't been so long since they'd preferred Isaac's room to her flat—why did this have to be any different?
