Party Planning
Date & Time: Saturday, 28 December 2002 | Midday
Post Type: RP
Status: Complete
Character(s): Lisa Turpin, Michael Corner
Location: Lisa's flat, #210 Magnolia Manor
Summary: Lisa and Michael plan a New Year's party.
Retcon Info: Michael returned on Dec 26.

Lisa knew it was last minute, but Michael's return to England had been enough to make her finally commit to the idea of hosting a New Year's party. She'd casually mentioned it to a few people, so she knew they could at least have a small, casual gathering, but the size of the potential guest list she was writing was larger than she would have expected. How was it that six months ago she thought she didn't have any friends, and now suddenly she knew half of the wizarding world. Not that they were all friends, exactly—even the ones who used to be—but it was worlds beyond what she thought she'd have.

She pushed the list Michael's direction and then stood up from the tiny dining table where they'd been planning, crossing to the refrigerator and peering at the contents. Obviously, she'd need to do some fairly substantial shopping if they were going to be hosting guests, even if they asked everyone to bring something. "Have I missed anyone obvious?" she asked, turning back to him. "I can't believe we're going to send bloody invitations to something. Aunt Imogen will be proud." She made a face and rolled her eyes.

"What about backup music?" Lisa said, leaning one hip against the worktop as she considered. "Surely you won't want to play all night. Be pretty sad if you can't even pull yourself away for a midnight kiss."

When Lisa mentioned having people over for a New Year's get-together, he'd imagined less than a handful of people. He was always up for a swinging party, but he hadn't expected the same from Lisa. Not that she wasn't likable or easy on the eyes—what bloke would turn down an invite from her? But when she slid the parchment in his direction, his eyes bugged.

"How could you have missed anyone?" he asked and chuckled. "I think all of Britain is on here." He grinned at her and shoved one hand through his hair as he leaned back in the chair. "Turpin, have you gone all party-animal on me while I've been gone? Aren't you Miss Sociable? Bloody invitations and all. Will they have glitter and sparkles?"

Michael propped his feet up on the chair Lisa emptied. She stared at the interior of the fridge. He'd need to get some food and drinks to replace what she'd been giving him.

"I can charm the piano for a bit. Play a few tunes while I charm a lady or two or three."

Lisa automatically rolled her eyes again at his comments, but she turned away to dig into the cupboard to hide the fact that she was pretty sure her cheeks were a bit pink, too. No one knew better than Michael how sparse her social life had been the last few years. That wasn't to say that she hadn't spent time with people or even gone to parties or had a good time, but they were all transient people in her life, not actual friends. Even Michael had been in and out. "Non-traveling job and suddenly there's all these expectations that I'll actually talk to people. Just watch, you'll see." That brought a thought to mind, and she turned to look at him again, hoping the heat had receded enough from her face. "You are planning to stick around for awhile, yeah?"

As much as she had started to truly settle into this new chapter of her life, she didn't want him to disappear again. Even though she knew he'd always be back, it always felt like a little piece of herself was missing when he wasn't around.

"Two or three? That's awfully optimistic of you." Lisa raised an eyebrow as she crossed back over to him and grabbed the guest list from his hand. She scanned it, pausing only to give him a quick, suspicious look before continuing. Finally, she made a dismissive noise and tossed it onto the table. "No way there are two or three girls who'd fall for your shite. My new social circle is far too smart for that."

Michael watched Lisa's arse as she sashayed to the cupboard. Food. He needed to buy food. This would soon turn out worse than when he'd been living at home, always expecting his mum to foot the bill, even the last few months when he'd been completely capable of working. He patted his hand against his pants pocket. A few knuts rattled. But first he needed a bloody job. Shite.

Lisa glanced at him over her shoulder, asking him about his future plans. For as carefree as he normally felt, his stomach tightened slightly. He'd definitely need work if he were going to stay. He felt surprised by the feeling of longing for a family that washed over him. For as hot as Lisa was, she also felt like family to him, and he'd missed that.

"Yeah," he finally answered. "I think I will. If you'll have me. At least for a while. I'll look around, see what's available around here." Maybe work. Maybe another flat. Maybe a new start.

Michael chuckled and leaned forward to look at the guest list she'd tossed on the table. He pointed to two names. "Her and her. And maybe I'll invite a few birds of my own. Mix it up. Have appetizers and dessert." He couldn't keep a straight face, and he burst out laughing. "What? I'll wash the sheets."

Lisa breathed out at his affirmative answer. She wanted to give him one of her typically-sassy responses, but she found that she was too relieved to do anything immediately other than give him a wide smile. "Of course I'll have you," she said once she'd turned back to the cupboard and shifted around a couple of items, checking for hidden goodies. She could have sworn she'd stuffed a box of biscuits in there to keep herself from eating them all.... "I can talk to the building manager and see if there are any larger units opening up soon, just in case. He might be willing to let us trade up."

She shrugged, then gave up on miraculously finding anything else and instead grabbed a bag of crisps and tossed it onto the table.

"Oi! Last I checked, you didn't bloody have sheets. That's my couch you're talking about sullying." Lisa swatted his arm with the back of her hand, pushed his feet out of her chair, and then sat down again. She decided it was best not to mention her own couch escapades, nor that one of the women he'd indicated was her sixty-three-year-old co-worker. She pulled another sheet of parchment and started jotting down things they'd need from the grocery. "Do you know girls in England that I don't know? I'm fairly sure there's some unspoken rule against that."

Michael found himself nodding, even though Lisa's back was to him. A larger unit meant that..Lisa would move with him? "You'd want to get a flat together? I'd like that. Not that your couch isn't brilliant, but my own bed..." Michael would definitely need to find a job soon. If they did trade up for a larger unit, he wouldn't allow Lisa to pay rent alone. He shifted in his chair.

Michael opened the bag of crisps and turned it toward Lisa after he grabbed a handful. When he laughed, a few crumbs flew from his mouth, and he slapped his hand over his mouth too late. "I know a good cleaning spell," he said and grinned.

"Who says the birds have to be from England? Do you doubt how far my charming reach spans?" He winked and reached for the bag of crisps. "Let's talk music. What do you have in mind for this party? Please tell me that this won't be a dull Ravenclaw party where the guests will sit around reading or talking about books all night."

Lisa didn't think it was all that surprising that she'd be more than willing to have Michael as a real roommate, but she supposed it wasn't an unusual question. Through all the years, it was one of the few things they actually hadn't done together. "It's about time you got a grown-up flat, Corner. I don't think I could handle visiting you in another dump like the last one." She flashed him a quick smile. "And this way I don't have to visit."

She grabbed a couple of crisps as she sat, chewing thoroughly through her smirk before she spoke. "You forget I've spent time with you in foreign countries. Rome. That's all I have to say about that." It was a frequent joke and reference between them, but only because it was accurate—that had been a trip of a lifetime in more ways than one. "I guess that depends on whether you make me invite Goldstein or not." She raised one eyebrow in challenge. Sure, he was on the list, and sure, she'd never intentionally exclude one of their own, but bloody hell he was annoying sometimes. "Or Boot, for that matter. You let him get stuffy in his old age. I will be consuming adequate amounts of alcohol that should ensure no dullness will ensue, so the music should be appropriately upbeat. Like that one you were playing last night."

Lisa snapped her fingers at him as if trying to remember a title, except that she was sure it was something he'd made up on the fly. "You know, with the dum-dum-DA-dum." Then she stuck out her tongue at him preemptively, knowing that she had no real sense of tune or rhythm.

Michael rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, yeah, dump is a nice way of saying that I normally live in places one step above complete shite holes. Except the last one. That one was most definitely total shite. Growing up might suit me." He grinned. "But one step at a time. No reason for me to rush into adulthood all at once."

Michael chuckled thinking about Goldstein. "For as intelligent as Ravenclaws are, why do so many of us have to be boring wankers? Present company excluded." He grabbed a crisp and pointed it at her. "You, dear Lisa, have never been dull. Not with that arse." He winked playfully.

"Oh, yeah, sure I remember. The one that sounds like dum-dum-DA-dum. That clears it up brilliantly." He leaned his elbows on the table. "Upbeat, though, sure I can do that. When are you going to send owls? Are we hosting it here? As in, this flat? Or do you think we can upgrade soon enough?"

"I've no idea," she answered, keeping her tone intentionally serious, even though she was sure Michael could read the amusement in it. "Maybe it's a symptom of staying in England after school, not taking time to be a wild child for a few years? Actually, no, I'd rather blame the whole thing on Goldstein." She flashed him a grin as she reached out and snagged the crisp from his fingers.

Lisa kicked him under the table and stuck her tongue out again for good measure. "You know the one I mean." She stared at him for a moment, trying to decide if he was serious, and then burst out laughing. "You do realise it's three days until New Year's Eve, right? Even if there's an open flat that the manager will let us move into, and even if we can manage to move in the next three days, how in Merlin's name are we supposed to also put together a party?" She tapped her quill on the parchment, considering. "Shouldn't be too hard to put together some basic invitations today. Chances are that anyone who's actually going to come will reply pretty quickly, so we can probably figure out food tomorrow, and I'll grab everything after work on Monday. That'll give us Monday night and Tuesday to finish the last few things around here."
