RP: In which everyone tries not to be too awkward
Date & Time: 6th April 2003 | Midday
Post Type: RP
Status: Closed: Complete
Character(s): Dean Thomas, Hannah Abbott
Location: Studio Dean apprentices at, London
Summary: Hannah comes to sit for Dean

Dean had found himself rushing through his usual Saturday activities as quickly as he could. His shopping had been done, he'd made a vague attempt at tidying the flat and he'd even stuck laundry in. By the time it was almost time for Hannah to arrive he'd been at the studio for an hour setting up chairs and backcloths and a mattress and setting up enough prepared materials for himself as well.

He'd also ducked into the little kitchen area and made sure there was tea, coffee and cake sitting ready for when they took a break. Now he was mostly just slightly anxious about how this would workout. He'd never worked with anyone brand new to modelling like this before, and never properly directed someone completely on his own. The fact it was someone he knew made it a little strange, but it wasn't as if he knew Hannah especially well, so it didn't matter so much.

Of course she was nervous. It was to be expected since a)Hannah had never modeled before; b)she was modeling for a male friend; and c)she was trembling as she walked to the address Dean had given her.

You are a strong, capable, successful witch she reminded herself as she approached the door. She brought a dressing gown with her along with her knitting things. Hannah figured during one of the breaks she could knit to calm her nerves. Raising her hand the door in order to knock, her whole arm shook.

"Hannah, Dean is a professional. He will not laugh or tell you you are ugly. You will be fine!" After she scolded herself, she knocked.

"Hello? Dean?"

Dean jumped at the knock on the door, but managed not to create a huge smudge on the pastel picture he'd picked up to calm his nerves once he was finished setting up.

He crossed quickly towards the door and smiled as he opened it and found Hannah. She did look slightly nervous, but that wasn't really very surprising, she wasn't a professional after all.

"Hi Hannah, come on in. You found it okay?" he asked. He knew it was out of the main wizarding areas, but he'd never had any particular problems, but being brought up in London as a Muggle did have its advantages there.

When she saw Dean smile, Hannah smiled back. "I only took one wrong turn, but figured it out quickly," she said, stepping into the flat. In order to giver her hands something to do, she gripped the bag she brought with her in a death grip.

"So, Hi! How are you?" Hannah asked nervously. Remember this is Dean. He's a friend! Relax. "I brought a dressing gown as you requested."

He nodded, some of the streets did tend to look the same, and if you couldn't spot a sign it was easy to get it wrong. "I'm glad you didn't have too much trouble, we're not exactly on the main path out here."

He closed the door behind her, trying to ignore the slight upswing in the speed of his heart. Nerves. he told himself.

"I'm good thanks, been here a while preparing. Let me show you around," he offered. He nodded at her mention of the dressing gown. "Great, that seemed easiest. You can use it between sessions to feel more comfortable," he explained.

"Look I know this is a bit odd, but please believe me when I say the fact you'll be disrobed really doesn't factor in. After the first few minutes I just don't see it." He was aiming for reassuring, but he wasn't sure he made it. "If you think you'll feel uncomfortable we can always owl someone to chaperone if you like."

"It's all right," she said in response to Dean's comment about being off the beaten path. Hannah nodded when he offered to show her around. Her head was looking around.

When he said that he wouldn't even see her nudity, she didn't know what to make of it. Does that mean he won't see me at all? Then what would be the point of a model? Even more confused than before, Hannah shook her head. "No. No. A chaperone won't be necessary. I'm likely to be more nervous with someone else here than I already am."

Chuckling nervously, she said, "Maybe we should get started. I promise not to flee in terror."

"Okay," Dean agreed. A chaperone would have been a little over the top, but he thought he should offer, just in case. "If you get too uncomfortable, either in the pose or being naked, just let me know and we can stop and have a break."

"But first, you can get undressed behind the screen there," he said, pointing to a corner of the studio which was marked off, a small stool behind it. "Put your dressing gown on when you're ready and I'll explain exactly what I need you to do." He gave her a small smile and politely turned away to adjust some of his collection of materials.

Hearing say they could take a break if she got to uncomfortable did make Hannah feel a little better about the whole thing. It seemed, at least to her, that she needed to remind herself that even though Dean was a friend, he was the artist and she was there to help him with work.

Yes, Hannah. Think of this in a professional setting. Who cares that you will be naked one voice said, while another one said to her that it was her friend Dean that would be seeing her naked. Merlin, I hope I don't have stretchmarks or very hairy legs.

The brief moment of calmness was quickly squashed as Hannah self-consciously began to think of her body and if it was presentable enough for him. "Thank you," she said before turning to hide behind the dressing screen. She had two robes, but one was plain cotton and old and worn; not something Hannah thought would be suitable for public eyes.

After pulling her dressing gown out, Hannah stripped out of her trousers and jumper quickly. Her hands shook as she removed her bra and knickers, folding each piece of clothing before tucking them into her bag.

Wrapping the robe around herself, she tied the sash tightly around her middle. Hannah had to force her hands to her side, so she wouldn't grip the slightly open neck of the garment. She stepped out from behind the screen.

"Umm...where would you like me to...ummm sit?"

Dean glanced up again as Hannah reemerged, smiling at her, in what he hoped was a calming manner.

"Well, I think perhaps sitting or lying would be more comfortable for you to start with, so why don't we start with sitting," he said thoughtfully, gesturing towards the small stool. It didn't look padded but it had a cushioning charm on it, to make it a tiny bit more comfortable.

"I don't mind your pose though, so if you find something you think you'll be able to keep for a few minutes, still apart from breathing, blinking and involuntary twitches, that sort of thing," he explained. "You can do that with your robe on or off, whichever you feel more comfortable with, then just let me know when you're ready."

He picked up the drawing pad on his own stool and flicked his wand at the wireless in the corner. "If if makes you want to move I can turn it off again later," he mentioned, sitting himself down, making sure he wasn't staring at her, trying to stay as strictly professional as possible.

She nodded as she crossed over to the stool; Dean's smile and soothing voice helped her stop trembling as crossed the room. Hannah took several deep breaths before sitting.

The wooden seat was comfortable, but she shifted four or five times before she sat with her back straight and her legs crossed at the knees. She shifted one last time, so that she was sitting more profile to him. Fiddling with the tie on the robe, Hannah thought about what he said about keeping the robe on.

"I think I'll leave the robe on to start with, if that's all right?" She did adjust the robe to show off her thigh. In all her movement, the collar opened wider as well. Settled, she folded her hands in her lap then dropped them down to her side followed by crossing them over her chest.

"What do I do with my hands?" Hannah asked, looking over her left shoulder at Dean for some guidance.

When Dean caught her attempting to take a peek, she shook her head. "No, that's alright," Hannah said, giving him a small smile. The more he talked about his sketches, the more confused he became. My body looks like a dip? She found herself shaking her head no.

"You think you've done something wrong?" she asked, suddenly wanting to see the drawing. Hannah thought more about what he was saying, realizing that he was frowning at himself. Relief washed over her."I'm sure it's great."

Sitting down in one of the chairs, she crossed her legs and watched him prepare cups of tea. "Sugar, please."

"Yup," he confirmed. "Because the weird dip thing definitely wasn't there on your leg, and yet there it is on the page," he said with a laugh, shaking his head at himself. "It's where I need Anna to take a look, because she'd know in seconds what I'd done. 'Spose it's good practice to make me work it out myself though."

He finished pouring the tea and added milk to his own, bringing the sugar and a spoon over for Hannah with her cup. "Sorry, I'm never quite sure about adding other people's sugar," he said, turning back and grabbing his tea and cake before sitting down on one of the sofas.

Hannah do not panic! she scolded herself when Dean said he'd have to have Anna look at the drawing. Of course, he'd ask the artist he's apprenticing for to help. It's no big deal; she probably won't know it's you. Despite the voice in her head telling her calm down and to act professional, she still felt insecure about what she looked like on paper.

"No, that's fine. I tend to dump a lot in," Hannah said as she proceeded to place three spoonfuls into the cup before stirring. "So, do you think it's...you know, going alright?"

She was curious as to what he thought of her modeling thus far. While Hannah made not have been the ideal body type, she also was one of those people her would push herself to be better if needed be.

Dean blinked in surprise at her adding a lot of sugar to the tea, but then realised he was eating cake and had no leg to stand on. He nodded encouragingly to her question though and finished chewing his mouthful before he answered.

"Yeah, it seems to be," he said enthusiastically. "I mean sitting that still in one position just isn't natural to most people so you're doing well. And that first pose was amazing even if you couldn't hold it long. I swear the people Anna's been working with for years haven't attempted something like that, or at least not when I've seen them," he said with a chuckle, giving her a silent round of applause.

"It's always lovely to draw someone new, discover what their proportions are, what little things you can find in the way they hold their limbs or the expression on their face," he explained. "I guess that might sound a little creepy," he added, but shrugged it off. "It's a total fascination for me though. I'm hoping to specialise in portraits and people-focused things eventually so finding what people can and do express is endlessly fascinating." He was very animated as he explained, waving his hands to emphasise his points.

Nodding, Hannah was pleased to hear that things were going well. "I never thought about how much concentration you needed to sit still," she said, surprised that she tried something that even professionals didn't try.

"Well, I hope you were able to get something down. Sorry, I couldn't hold it for long." She sipped the tea, enjoying its sweetness. Hannah listened as Dean talked about his artwork, agreeing that some of it did sound little creepy. However, between his words and all of his hand movements she could see how passionate he was for his work.

"I bet you do a lot of people watching."

He nodded along to her comments, pleased she seemed as if maybe she was relaxing a little, or at least she didn't seem nervous right at this moment. Then again they were taking a break, so that probably meant nothing.

"Yeah, I'm meant to be able to get a basic idea of a shape from only a few seconds, and you managed a couple of minutes so I got a decent outline in and even a bit of shading. But I admit I kind of expected you to not hold it long when I saw it," he said with a small smile.

A grin spread over his face she mentioned people watching. "Yeah I do an awful lot. With or without the sketchpad. I can still see how shadows work and so on without drawing it," he said, drifting off slightly to look over Hannah's shoulder at one of the pieces on one of Anna's easels before looking back at his friend, smiling warmly.

Hannah found herself blushing a little at his complaintments. "Well, good then," she said. "And please tell me if I'm doing something wrong or if you'd prefer me to do something else. Remember, I'm new at this."

Seeing her friend smile, she immediately invited him to come by the pub. "There's always good people to watch. Not sure how long they stay in one position, but there's always a wide variety of people about."

She watched as his eyes drifted over her shoulder. While Hannah wondered what he was looking, she continued to sip on the tea until the cup was empty. After returning his smile, she said, "All right, I'm ready for more sitting if you are."

"I'll do my best," he assured her. Privately though he thought he wouldn't, even though she wasn't a professional it was good to have someone different who might do something new. Even if it was a classic pose, it would be on a different body.

Nodding vaguely, Dean made a non-committal sort of noise, saying that he might. "There's a difference between knowing someone will move and if they won't. But whatever happens I'll try and come to the pub again sometime," he hesitated to explain his social anxiety, especially as it was lessening to an extent. He didn't know Hannah overly well, not well enough to blurt out the details of his strange idiosyncrasies anyway.

Dean grinned and jumped up, leaving his part-drunk tea. It didn't matter, he would make more later anyway and he hadn't been especially thirsty. "Sounds great, only how about lying down?" he suggested, pointing at the mattress sat not too far from the stool. "Unless you'd feel too uncomfortable," he said hurriedly. He wanted to make it clear she had the option of what to do, the right to feel comfortable.

Noticing how quiet he began, Hannah bit her bottom lip. She hadn't meant to bring up something that would upset him, although she could understand his lack of explanation.

The music from the Wireless filled the room as the two of them remained quiet. Her eyes continued to watch him work. The movement of his hand as well as intensity in how he worked kept her attention during the silence. She wondered what he was thinking; what he saw when he drew her, but she didn't ask. Instead, she just watched him.

As Dean came to the end of the drawing he started to become more aware again, noticing the minor twitches in Hannah's face as he drew in her features. He smiled softly as he worked, pleased with what he'd come up with and how long she'd managed to keep the pose.

Then he was finished, or at least at a point he thought he shouldn't mess with it any longer, or it would get worse rather than better. At least for now. He was getting better at sensing when the point would be. He could go back and work on it later, but now it was silly to go on.

He pulled his pencil away and smiled more widely at Hannah. "Well, I'm done, you can move," he said, stretching out his fingers a little.

She was pleased to see him smile a little as he worked; it told her that he was happy with the drawing. Hannah remained still until Dean told her that it was alright for her to move.

"Thank Merlin!" she exhaled as she stretched out. Even though the position wasn't terribly taxing, she was beginning to get a ache in her lower back. She rolled unto her back and rested for a fe minutes.

"Sorry, small back pain. Does it look good?"

"No, no," Dean said waving off her stretching. "After posing for that long you definitely deserve to stretch out," he said, sitting smiling at her. Watching as she stretched.

He caught himself slightly staring without jumping this time and nodded when she asked if it looked good. "Yeah, I might make some small alterations later but it definitely looks good. Would you like to see?" he asked.

Chuckling, she stretched her arms above her head. Hannah took time to roll her back, pressing each vertebrae into the mattress into order to work out the small kink.

"No, no," she began to protest, not wanting to see what Dean saw. She knew what he saw because she could see the same thing. It's a drawing of some chubby girl, trying to pretend to be skinny, a voice in her head said. However, Dean's words and his smile as he work reminded her that he was pleased with it.

"Well, maybe a peek?"

Dean had to look away as Hannah stretched out her back more fully. Which was silly considering he'd been expecting her to get naked at some point. Somehow this was different though, a little too intimate. Definitely not professional to be looking.

He chuckled warmly as she protested not wanting to see before changing her mind. "I'm sure just a peek is allowed," he said, standing up and crossing to where she was lying. Leaning down so he was balanced on his haunches he turned the pad around so she could see her own likeness. It was nothing like a finished, full length sat portrait, but it had a lot of detail and the outlining was finished properly, the shading rough but accurate. In short it looked very much like Hannah had. And rather beautiful for that.

After a moment of stretching, Hannah adjusted the robe a little to be covered more fully. The naked thing still bugged her in the back of her mind, but she was becoming more used to the idea.

She lifted her head to get a good look at the drawing. While she thought it was good, Dean's artist ability was amazing, Hannah couldn't keep her mind from being critical of herself. Ugh! Your thighs are huge, Hannah! And your stomach...

The likeness of the portrait was bringing a frown to her face. Hannah didn't want Dean to see the disgust she felt on her face, so she smiled and laid her head back down.

"Dean, you did a brilliant job. Looks just like me." Maybe you should make it look like someone else...

The frown that crossed Hannah's face wasn't something Dean could miss, not when he'd been looking at her seeming so calm whilst he drew. Her words and her smile didn't fit though and his eyebrow knit together in a frown for a second.

"Thanks," he said, before pressing on. "Is there something wrong?" He hesitated, shaking his head, then started again. "Never mind, it's just...no, never mind," he said, straightening up.

"I'll be back in a second, just want to finish that tea," he said, moving over to the sofa and his half-finished cup.
