"Yes, Stephen, I do, in fact, want to die right now! Even if that death comes to me in the most brutal way possible -- such as being tortured to death by the Order members who are still alive! As a matter of fact, I would welcome that sort of death: a fitting end to a sanctimonious, Crusading arsehole such as myself...!
"Accio wand!" Matthew found himself crying out, nevertheless, just before Stephen closed the moleskin pouch over his wand. Fortunately or unfortunately, it seemed he was a little too drunk to manage wandless charms just now! He sighed deeply, and then coughed again as the residual smoke from Stephen's cigarette filled his lungs. When he had managed to stifle the coughing -- with another glug from his abandoned glass, naturellement -- he answered Stephen's question about his 'options':
"I... am not sure, Stephen, quite honestly. As much as I would like to go with you -- the idea of paying for my many sins is so much more appealing, just at the moment...! So... why would I attempt to run from the Death Eaters? I mean, at least I can be certain they'll treat me brutally enough, whereas the Order... may have too many morals to properly brutalise me...! Of course... you could take quite a bit of damage to your person by trying to break my wards, so..." And here, he smiled darkly into his goblet. as he thought of the hexes he had built into his wards, such as Furnunculus, "...I really wouldn't recommend trying, Stephen..."
Matthew glanced up again at Stephen's last question, from his now-empty third glass of wine -- how had that happened? -- and as he met his old friend's eye, his own eyes looked very tired -- defeated, even. "Because, Stephen, it's only the same courtesy I offered everyone I killed -- save, I suppose, for the men who burned to death upon that ship in Hull -- the chance to be buried by, and with, their own kin...!"
He didn't sound particularly convincing -- not because he was lying about leaving the corpses of his victims behind to be discovered by their family members, but because he was completely lacking in faith that Stephen would actually kill him. He didn't think Stephen had it in him to kill a friend, even if that friend was a monster, and even if the death was an unjustifiably merciful one...!
