He basically knew that if Matthew did that, You-Know-Who would probably hunt him to the ends of the universe, but Stephen lived in a world where it wasn't too much of a bother to disappear, so long as you weren't averse to spending long periods of time indoors.
And suddenly, watching his friend cry and moan, Stephen felt fairly helpless, and must have looked it too. "Well...I have no idea, really," he replied, "But you shouldn't say that. You're fine - a decent person, at least. Probably if you're just blindly following the path even if you know it's wrong, maybe you should just cut your losses, put your head between your knees, and go somewhere else.
