Well this would not do. Whatever had happened to Diana, Matthew was insinuating that Stephen was wrong when he clearly wasn't. That needed to be corrected. He sat back and put his almost empty wine glass on the table before steepling his hands and looking almost like he was getting ready for a competition. Which in a way he was. But never mind that. "Well yes, you developed a bond with her later in life, and you say it's the sort of bond you have with me...you are aware that I'm different from the woman who ostensibly raised you, correct? And that there are different kinds of love and different kinds of bonds?"
This got Stephen on a roll, so he continued, "And whether he loved her or not...well, I don't know, you'd better ask him about that. But you must know that our parents' generation is different from ours and that, however much more progressive magical society is with regards to gender equality some things do still filter through. So whether or not he loved her, he was in a superior position to her and that would have satisfied his desire for dominance."
He drank the rest of his wine, having talked himself dry. "As for You-Know-Who, I mean, he offered you power and you would have just been compromising for that. And I don't know why I'm arguing this for you, since I think it's probably bollocks anyways. Babies don't have a sense of submission and domination."
