"Oh, no, Stephen...! I'm certain he wasn't abusing her that early! I mean, she would have been only three or four during my eighth year of life on this earth!" Even if he was, in fact, abusing her from the tender age of four. "I only meant that-- well, given what he did to her, that bastard -- pardon my French-- was never really much of a father figure to her... And I suppose that is rather rubbish of him, as you put it so neatly, but really, Mother was good enough to her...! I only meant that... well..."
He took another long draw from his glass, and refilled it again, even though he hadn't quite emptied it yet! "My father was a completely rubbish one -- at least to her! He never laid a hand on me -- which is really -- well, that is to say -- it suited me well enough!"
He didn't seem to appreciate the implication in his choice of words that suggested his father had not abused him, and how much that suited him-- at least until the words were already out of his mouth. "I mean-- I'm not exactly grateful that she was abused instead of me! That is to say..." The corners of his mouth turned up slightly, possibly in an embarrassed smile, but equally possibly a grimace of disgust. "I mean, I at least could escape -- to my church, to Hogwarts even sooner than she was able to...!"
The expression on his face turned into an unmistakable grimace as Stephen mentioned his association with the Ministry. "Sorry, Stephen, but... I don't know. I suppose I could escape the Ministry and this whole bloody existence -- once my father's gone...! I mean, Uncle Nicholas promised me he wouldn't last the week out, now that he's..." And then Matthew hesitated, realising his words damned him yet again! "I mean... now that he's so sick! And I don't mean that in the 'sick bastard who fucking raped his own DAUGHTER sense!" He turned almost as red as the wine in his glass as he realised how many profanities had found their way out of his mouth, just then.
