This took a bit of processing. There were a few things that shocked Stephen about what he was hearing, and couldn't quite put his finger on which one he wanted to deal with first, or which one he thought he could make the most tactful comment on. So for a bit he just stood there, his eyes wide, listening to Matthew and nodding every once in a while. He took the glass without saying anything for a little bit, looking a little bit cornered.
Maybe he was just surprised to hear Matthew telling him this. Stephen had never considered himself close enough for his friend to confide in, and this - well, maybe he was just getting it out there in the most factual terms he could manage. Leave no room for questions, aside from ones that would obviously be much too personal to ask. But just outright it sounded unimaginably horrific. "I'm...I'm so sorry," he said eventually, before realizing he'd said that several times before, and that it was probably getting very old.
Like a fool, he stated the obvious. "How terrible for her, I mean...Jesus, Matthew. And you didn't know til now?" That felt like a stupid question, somehow. "Yes, yes, that sounds like an idea."
