"My father? He's..." An unconscionable bastard, is what Matthew wanted to say, but really, he had just enough decorum left to stay his tongue. He instead said, as levelly as possible when he was choked up with anger at his father, as well as genuine grief -- for Diana, that was, not that miserable old bastard -- "Well, he's not well at all, Stephen. My uncle Nicholas said he won't last the week out... Not that I care anymore!"
He grimaced expressively at that small slip, revealing part of what Di probably didn't want anyone else to know, but then he decided that it was completely unfair of him to keep this secret from Stephen, when Diana's flatmates had borne witness to their discussion of the matter. Besides which, he didn't want Stephen to worry about him, falling apart in his grief for his FATHER! "I mean -- Stephen, new information has... come to light that makes me... not too sorry to see him go on to his Judgement, quite honestly!"
He swallowed hard at the discovery that Stephen had brought alcohol to the meeting. It was oh, so tempting, to just... give up and get drunk, and try to forget what he'd done -- or in Diana's case, hadn't done for her -- at least for a little while. Maybe it would even silence the voice of his miserable conscience for the day -- the conscience that was currently urging him to sin even more by killing himself! "Th-thank you, Stephen... but... this really wasn't necessary; I mean, you haven't been invited in any formal manner or to any formal event!" But even so, he accepted it when Stephen handed it over. Oh, it would be wonderful to forget his troubles for the evening...!
