Matthew really did look like he'd been dragged, face-down, through Hell itself, but he managed a brief smile, at least, at the sight of his old friend. Well, old in the sense that all Matthew's school friend(s) were long gone; all he had left was Stephen, really. Again his face clouded over, as he thought about how he might have treated Benjamin more fairly, but he shook himself of those notions, and smiled again, rather awkwardly now, at Stephen, as he laid a hand on his shoulder. "Thank you, but... I think I'd rather prefer you knock, rather than to break into my home! Even so... it is good to see you again, Stephen..."
They stood there in awkward silence for a long moment, and then Matthew cleared his throat; he felt a lump forming in it again -- though why he was so close to Manly Tears (TM) he couldn't quite put his finger on. "I..." He cleared his throat again, still attempting to make it less hoarse than it sounded, just now. "I mean, it's very good to see you, Stephen! You're honestly... the only person I have left on this earth...!"
And he coughed and cleared his throat yet again as he felt the tears welling up in his eyes. No, dammit, stop thinking about Di, and what your Father did to her! Strangely, this voice in his head sounded like the same one which had earlier encouraged him to break down...! The contradictory voice of his subconscious was truly amazing...
