Oh. Oh. It was becoming rapidly clearer to Stephen that he'd grossly misjudged the situation in his mind. Clearly, Matthew was a little less deluded than he had been when Stephen had last seen him. And yet, he didn't really feel sorry at all for Matthew. Well, maybe he felt a bit of sympathy for Diana's death, and maybe a bit of pity for Matthew, who stood in tears before him. Indeed, the feeling of pity only grew, pity for someone so terrifically naive who was only now realized the meaning of what he professed.
"I can say it," he said, still calm, "It's a bland statement of fact. Because you raised her doesn't stop it from being true. She was your enemy. Just like Benjy was, just like I am." This came out of him easily, though he was laughing ever so slightly by the end. "And you won!" He looked straight at Matthew again. "Though now that you have won, I don't see any reason in not calling your side by its proper name. None of this 'Knights' bollocks."
