He'd thought Ellen was a lot like him, but clearly he had underestimated the impression he'd make on a kid. Dean didn't know why that was, exactly. He knew he rubbed off on Ben. Of course he'd hear his own words outta the mouths of his kids.
He just set his jaw in return, and shook his head slightly. He supposed he deserved a kid as stubborn as he was. Just for what he did to Bobby and Sam, what he put them through when he made his Deal. He could remember Bobby's face when he said he had a year left, the utter disappointment and disgust.
She was right. You didn't leave family behind. Sometimes they left you, decided to throw themselves down into Hell to save your ass.
"Yeah," Dean said. "We do."
He started walking back toward Ellen's room, at a pace that would encourage Mary to walk with him.
