It took Sam a moment to process the unexpected situation. He had seen a reaper once before, while he was fully conscious--had watched it kill the woman who had tried to bind and manipulate it, in fact. But he'd only met Tessa once, so he hadn't expected to find her in his bedroom, in the flesh. Or reasonable facsimile.
It also took him a moment to remember why it was that he'd woken up, and what he was supposed to be doing, but the echo of Molly's voice in his head helped clear that up--and then Tessa's presence didn't seem quite so alarming. He hadn't exactly summoned her, but he had thought about it.
"Tessa," he said, mostly for Molly's benefit. "Long time, no see."
"It hasn't been that long," the reaper said, "But it's nice of you to remember me." Her gaze shifted, and she addressed the wizard as if she were actually, physically in the room, rather than hitchhiking in Sam's head. "Hello, Molly. I've got to say, this is an interesting change of pace from the usual bag 'n' tag. Are you ready to go?"
