Dean pulled his head back slightly when she said that.
So not only did Cas stay in the picture, he kept asking for his help. He took Dean away from his kids for that help. And Dean went.
He made a noise of loss when Ellen took the flask and took it back the second she was done with it. She'd pretty much just told him that the Impala no longer existed. She oughta be careful how long she took liquor away from him. He knocked more of it back.
You're a good dad.
That was both surprising and not, really. He knew he'd been good to Ben, but much as he loved John, Dean was starting to get that his dad hadn't always been making the best choices for his kids. That was what he'd had to learn from. And Bobby. Bobby who'd played catch with him so he could be a kid, when John wanted him to be taking Dean for target practice.
"Takes a village, I guess," Dean said. He wanted to know if Sam had any family, but he didn't pry. Not now.
He remembered talking to his mom, when he'd seen her. When she was pregnant with him. And what he'd told her to convince her he was her son.
Dean turned to face Ellen, eyes searching her face.
"When you were real little," he said, "did I sing to you?"
