Anita didn't like feeling like she was out of control--unless it happened to be in the throes of passion with someone she trusted. She liked Justine, and Thomas was drop dead sexy--and very much alive--but she'd really only just met them, and she'd rather be buzzed on caffeine than booze, any day. She was a Federal Marshal, and human servant to a master vampire, and this meeting wasn't just a dinner date. It was a potential alliance with the son of another master vampire. She didn't want to screw it up for anyone.
"Yeah, not so much," Anita said, wrinkling her nose a little, then smiling. She was much more impressed by the fact that he wasn't trying to impress her. It kept her natural defensiveness at least partly at bay, which meant things would go a lot more smoothly. "I'm afraid my sense of humor tends toward sarcasm and annoying my boss."
