Julian gave her a light smile as she guessed what he was doing. "What can I say? I'm a sucker for beautiful girls who crawl in my hospital window." His fingers were quickly turning black from the way he kept smudging the image to get the shading right. He sketched as he always sketched, quickly and impulsively, the pencil sometimes spinning in his fingers as he used the eraser to add to the image, to create highlights in the shadows his fingers had created.
"See, it's pretty damn boring in here. All white and gray. I don't even have paints with me, just pencils. Not even crayons. And in walks -- well, climbs -- this bubble of colors. Bright, gliding through the room like a rainbow with wings. But she's looking for someone stiff and British, so that means she won't be here long."
He shrugged, maybe a touch of sadness in the gesture. "So I want to preserve that. Even if I only have grays to do it with. Something to make it a bit brighter. Something to keep the memory fresh in my mind."
