"Wait, seriously?" Dawn looked over at Mel, a grin spreading across her face. That was just too convenient. "That's awesome! I can't believe I haven't seen you 'round there yet. I mean, you're not, um, easy to miss." She gestured to Mel's hair. In her head, she was already planning late-night movie fests with lots of vending machine junk food. Mel didn't seem like she was the pedicure type, but one never knew.
They'd left the campus, and were heading in a direction that wasn't, well, direct to the Phoenix but Dawn recognized the route. York was a small town. The cemetery was just a few blocks ahead.
Dawn wondered if there was a subtle way of spilling some holy water on Mel, just in case. In her excitement in making a new friend, she'd forgotten to be cautious. Obviously Mel wasn't a vampire, but she could be... something else. Maybe this was a trap.
She heard the footsteps when Mel did, and stopped a split second after the other girl halted. Looking at Mel, she brought a finger to her lips while her arm, the one not holding a pile of books, went for the knife in her bag.
