It didn't occur to Dean, either. Which was unfortunate. There were very few people he really wanted to unleash the goddamn mayhem that was his soul onto. Jo was at the very bottom of that list. Right next to Sam, just below Bobby.
He never really wanted her to see... what was it? How would he put it? He didn't know, but he knew the instant the soul gaze with Harry was finished that he never wanted Jo to have to go through that. And he never really wanted anyone that far inside his head.
Certainly not a girl he was in love with. That alone was enough of a struggle.
He felt it when it started, and instantly he knew without a doubt it was Jo. He remembered. He remembered what she'd said about her dad, the way he smelled. And that was what started it.
He could smell it. The leather jacket. Traces of an aftershave Dean couldn't place. And he could feel the jacket, feel what it was like to be picked up, a little kid. There was a laugh from somewhere behind, somewhere Dean couldn't see, and he knew it was Ellen. He'd never heard Ellen laugh like that.
It was strange when that laughter stopped. But it was quick. Ellen looked a lot like the stern-faced woman Dean remembered, and she was at the Roadhouse. William Anthony Harvelle was gone. This was worse than losing John, to Dean. The happy family? The Winchesters weren't that. Mary and John had a perfect marriage after Mary died. Not before.
There was a school hall way, now. Dean wasn't sure what grade level. And Jo walking along it, kids and back packs everywhere. One of the kids called her a freak as she passed.
Then there was a guy. Dean didn't know who he was, but he saw the way he smiled at Jo. And he saw her reaction, and he recognized it. He could almost feel it, which was weird. This had to be a boyfriend. He was a hunter, for sure. He had the flannel and the scar to prove it. He smiled, he hugged and kissed Jo, and...
This was kinda torture. It was like he was there. Watching the door with her. Waiting for him to come back from hunting. Glancing at the door, trying to keep her mind off of it. And when it finally opened, it wasn't the boyfriend. It was another guy, telling Jo he was sorry, so sorry...
