When Emma had finally, finally come to her senses and realized what’d been there all along, she’d felt like such a fool for not seeing it before. It’d been so obvious, and for someone who prided herself on knowing people so well, she was shocked to realize that she’d missed it all. She could meet a person and, within five minutes, have a good sense of what sort of person with whom they ought to be paired. And yet, in spite of all of that, she’d never once considered that her best friend was best suited to being with her, and vice versa.
“I wasn’t being sneaky, so I’m not surprised that you saw. I wanted you to see. I was sending you a message. No more khakis,” she said, pointing at him in warning. “What would’ve been in there, your dignity? I think you lost that when you put on those saggy things in the first place.”
She grinned. “Maybe not, but it’s totally a great word, isn’t it?” She nodded when he spoke, seeing a definite possibility in what he said. “Actually, that’s not a bad idea. We can track them down now that they’re still young and get them in even sooner so that they can be molded into perfection earlier.” She rested her head against his, drawing her knees up and setting the iPad higher on them so that he could see more easily. “We do, and plenty of cash to help speed along the process. We’ll be settled in no time.”
