It wasn't just dinner. It was the best meal those children had ever had in months, and it smelled delicious. They were eager, but the Doctor had reminded them of their manners and each of them sat patiently at the dinner table waiting, their eyes huge.
"Right, then. No gas masks at the dinner table. Come on."
"But what if I need it?" echoed a small boy's voice behind the mask.
"On your lap," said the Doctor.
When Steve entered the home, the children froze and stared at him afraid. The Doctor eyed the stranger up and down and then back at the children before lecturing, "Oy! Wipe your feet off and go wash up. You're the worst trained ape I've ever seen!"
That got some giggles from the children who were braver when they were around her despite the sirens, and the Doctor shared a secret smile with them, before comically changing her expression to Steve and pointing to a wash basin.
