Wait, he said, with his blood pounding underneath her thumb, wait, as if it had been easy and simple. She didn't look again at the madness on the walls, but she knew it'd been anything but easy. Yet, here he was, forgiving her before she could properly apologize, and giving her that smile again. Her chest hurt from the generosity.
He said she was worth it. Rose wasn't convinced, but she hoped to prove him right all the same.
"Can we..." She looked over to the couch, then back to him again, then winced when she realized he might not be so disinterested in food as she was. "Sorry --"
It felt like all she could say lately was "sorry".
