That caught his attention, gaze lifting sharply to Sidonie as she dictated the number of troops which would be distributed to Mehkal. This was a tricky matter. These Council meetings always were. One had to be mindful not only of what they said, but when and how they said it. Just that glance was probably out of line, as it did openly question her decision.
“Your Grace, if I may…” He looked to Mehkal then, the words even and reasonable in tone at least. “I believe Lord Mehkal, as your General, is entirely capable of determining his need as the situation dictates. We’ve precious little to go on as it stands and as there have already been attacks on the heart of our nation as well as within its southernmost provinces, there is every cause to believe the Danaan forces, whatever they may consist of, already have a foothold within the realm. I trust we are all eager to contribute to seeing this thing done swiftly and will gladly aid in what capacity we are able, but I would not see our palace unprotected in the interim. I beg Your Majesty to reconsider taking such an action so imminently."
He knew Sidonie was one to act first, and she was not precisely renowned for heeding the wisdom of her advisors. It may have had its benefits to her image as a strong Queen, but she was no General herself. Neither of them were, which was the point of electing Frederic Mehkal to begin with. Whatever their grievances, Mikino did not dispute the man's military qualifications.
