Her eyebrows rose for a moment in question when he began to say that his date was there, but her expression softened into commiseration when he mentioned loud being better than quiet. It was the same reason she was here. Some days it didn’t pay to be alone in her own head.
“Rae,” she smiled and countered his name with hers. “Loud. Definitely the way to go this week.” She raised her glass to him a moment then took a sip. She’d been slowly working at it, not the shot-taking type tonight or in general.
Removing the glass from her lips she continued; “and I didn’t mean it as an insult.” Her tone was genuine without being placating. “I never said that you couldn’t pick someone up. Just that I didn’t think you’d go for the type who wanted to be left alone. Take it as the compliment it’s supposed to be.” She shrugged her shoulders, trying to dismiss the botch she’d made of it. She really hoped he wasn’t offended. He didn’t seem to be, but she didn’t know him and some guys were just dead-set on taking comments the wrong way. “Guess I was just curious why you’d bother to stop to chat with me when you could be doing the whole prowl-the-room-thing.” From the direction her eyes were focused, it looked like she’d made that last comment to her drink.
