It was starting to shake. The creature hadn't given up its mission to attack Celeste and her friend, but it was clearly fading. Annie tried to swing the chair leg but her injured hand was already going stiff and swollen, blisters forming on her palm. The need to unclench her hand was too great to ignore and she had to let go, the weight of it pulling her good hand downwards and the leg, still gripped in one hand, clunking against the tile floor.
It seemed to be of no real consequence; the bullets had done their job and the rotting hulk of a creature had begun to rapidly decompose, the smell becoming strong enough that Annie lifted her injured hand to cover her nose and mouth.
"You might want to..." she started to say, but didn't get a chance to finish the sentence. What was left of the creature suddenly dissolved into a flood of dark green fluid that reeked of death, spilling all over the man on the floor as he protected Celeste's unconscious form.
The smaller creatures yowled and clattered from the inside of the freezer, but the door remained locked shut, and no more seemed to be advancing. Whatever had just happened, it seemed to be over.
"Yikes. Uh. I think we're in the clear," Annie called, hissing in pain as she cradled her hand against her chest. "Any idea what the fuck just happened here?" She glanced back at the fryer, still bubbling its now crispy critter. "I think I'm off french fries for good at this point."
