Derek was making a pyramid out of the tiny single serving packages of coffee creamer. It was a lone structure in a city of spilled grains of salt or sugar, a few dots of black pepper, the accumulated stains of coffee rings stacked one on top of the other. A roll of silverware sat unfurled, the spoon turned over to show him a distorted reflection of his face.
As much as he wanted to move away from that spot in the desert, he knew what was buried there could help close doors for other people. Doors that needed closing. So here he was. Whatever the consequences might be.
