The alarm on Derek’s phone had gone off at its scheduled time of 8 PM, buzzing quietly against his nightstand as the faint sound of sirens emitted from the device. The vampire was still fast asleep in his bed at 8:17, a pillow half-resting on his face. It wasn’t until the iPhone buzzed itself to the edge and fell to the carpeted floor with a thunk that he roused, his eyes opening blearily. His head was foggier than usual, like a hangover, except he hadn’t been drinking. He sat up, slightly confused, before leaning down to grab the phone and turn off the alarm, when the arm bracing himself against the bed slipped and he bumped his head against the corner of the nightstand. Derek groaned and pressed the ‘stop’ button, not noticing the unread text message on the screen, and reluctantly rolled himself out of bed. The vampire was almost never late for work, but it looked like things were heading in that direction as he dragged himself listlessly into the shower. His vision was blurrier than normal, and he rubbed his eyes a few times before resigning himself to the fact that something unusual was going on, which might as well have been his personal motto. The vampire would figure it out later.
After toweling off and getting dressed, he wandered into his small kitchen and opened his fridge to grab a quick meal, removing a Tupperware container full of butcher-acquired blood. When he popped the top off, his stomach heaved slightly at the sight and smell of it. Confused, Derek brought the container up to his nose and sniffed it, wondering if it had gone ‘off’ somehow, but it just smelled like blood. He shrugged and put it in the microwave. As the glass vessel revolved, the vampire leaned against the counter and checked his phone, raising an eyebrow when he noticed a group message sent from James. The microwave began beeping as he was still trying to process the fact that a spell had gone haywire and if it was affecting him somehow. Derek set down the phone and grabbed a glass before removing the warm blood and pouring the contents inside.
He took a sip…and immediately spit it out into the sink in utter disgust. “What the fuck?” the vampire muttered, tearing off a ragged handful of paper towels to wipe his mouth before turning on the tap and crouching down to rinse out the horrible, metallic taste from his mouth. After drying off, Derek reached up to run his fingers over his teeth. His gaze dropped back down to the phone as he realized that his heart was pounding. He took a deep breath as he re-read the text, as if it held any new information since the first time he had viewed it.
“Well, shit.”
