Go easy on me Who: Penny & Mermaid What: Legendary Creature Plot When: Present Rating: Gore
A Pyrrhic victory
It was a hollow victory.
Penny stared down at the blood stained water with a swell of pride. Bits of hair, scalp, brain stuck to the side of the fountain. The mermaid who had shown up to play had come to an ending that made her feel triumphed but empty.
The siren brushed her hands together but they were stained crimson.
It had started like any other evening. Penny was walking to work when she caught the eye of the mermaid bathing in the fountain. Purple tendril-like hair would be fluffed over a shoulder. A few spectators had paused to look, to take pictures. The mermaid didn’t seem to mind as the people thought it was a ploy by the casino.
Of course, as was their nature, the mermaid was bare chested and flaunting her beauty. Then they caught eyes and immediately knew each other.
Penny paused. She nearly broke her ankle as the heel of her shoe in the grooves of the sidewalk in her abrupt halt. She gripped her purse. The mermaid furrowed her brows, made a face and turned her nose up. A soft murmuring sound that only water creatures would hear. How ugly.
Beneath them. Sirens were always beneath them. It didn’t matter how much they did to try to tip the scales the other way, they would never be as good. Penny scowled. She didn’t care if they were in public. Tears began to run down her face though the mermaid couldn’t see them.
She closed the distance with a few clicks of her heels. Kicking them off, she threw her handbag down and grabbed the mermaid by the tendrils, bashing her head into the side of the fountain. The barrage of gasps would be ignored. A soft murmur of sound as the mermaid looked up at her, You are the ugly one.
The mermaid grabbed Penny by the throat and they rolled into the water together. A flap of the fin would send a flurry of water into the air. Twisting and turning, they hit the bottom, scraped elbows, a fin. Penny’s head hit the concrete hard. She saw stars, her head spun. The hills she kept hidden at her sides opened and bubbles flowed from beneath her dress.
Her throat tightened. Strong hands gripped her. Trying to kill her. She choked and then drove a strong punch into the mermaid’s stomach causing the creature to let up. It was enough. The siren changed enough to allow her to rip an arm from the mermaid’s shoulder. And then Penny surfaced. She took a breath, grabbed the mermaid by the hair and began to bash the skull and flesh against the side of the fountain.
