"How well do you know Miss Miller?" Annie pressed. Most of those she had spoken to claimed little to know knowledge of the girl, which seemed less than accurate. It was rare, for someone to be a complete unknown in their workplace. Annie never bought the 'he was so quiet, kept to himself' claims that came from people confronted with a coworker gone rogue or gone missing. It was purposeful lack of involvement.
People didn't want to be involved with law enforcement, didn't want to get their hands dirty or put themselves under a microscope. Annie thought her list of missing locals would be a lot shorter if people weren't always so intent on keeping their traps shut.
"Look, I'm a little skeptical at all the people around here who don't seem to have any idea what this girl was all about. People talk, even in passing. Sometimes they reveal more than they intended. Is there anything you thought she might be involved with that might bring her to harm, maybe spending some time with the wrong kind of people?"
