So much 'new'
Who: Brianna & Gabe
What: A chat
When: 5th October
Where: Le Breeze
“So I’m starting the refurbishing of the rooms next month. Is there anything I should know about your preferences before I start planning?”
Gabe rolled his eyes and looked across the table at Brianna. They were sharing a piece of Ronnie’s latest dessert test sample, and so far Bilson had managed to tuck away far more than Gabe had ever seen him scoff down before.
“A new location for the microbrewery, new dessert menu, new assistant manager, new powers, and now new rooms?” he grinned, waving the spoon around as he spoke. “And it’s not even spring! Something about the fall equinox has spurred you on?” he suggested, nudging the furry, black familiar away from the plate he and Brianna were sharing. “You’ve had yours, leave ours alone!”
Brianna laughed and quickly scooped up another forkful of the dessert as Bilson lifted his head and looked up at Gabe with disdain.
“Maybe, I don’t know, but Radek seems to be even more excited with my progress, in the small amount of time I’ve spent with him. I’m not sure if it’s me, or his project out at ‘the farm’, to be honest, as he’s hardly ever here much of late.”
“Have you ever been out there?” Gabe asked as Bilson began to preen himself.
“No, not that he’s asked. He’s apparently had some renovations done on the old house there, and is now staying out there from time to time.” Brianna didn’t bother to hide her concern, Gabe had become like a sibling, the brother she and Juliet had never had, and she felt at ease talking with him, even if he’d been away for a while. “He was again talking about his research into his own immortality, and started explaining about micro-things and molecular connectivity, or … I don’t know, it’s way beyond me, when he starts getting into details!”
Gabe laughed, nodding in agreement, knowing exactly what she meant. He’d joined Radek a few times for dinner, when he’d been in Le Breeze on a Wednesday evening, and while he had always enjoyed hearing the immortal’s stories he too had become bemused and lost when the doctor had become ensconced in his explanation of the work he was doing. Clearly he’d managed to nod and hum in surprise, or agreement at the right times as the Doc had always been pleased with the responses.
“Well, one day he will find an answer, I’m just not sure I want it to be in my lifetime - the idea of him being able to reanimate a body that appears to be in some sort of suspended animation, that has been put together from various pieces?” He shuddered at the thought and shook his head. “There’s enough dark magic out there that does that, don’t need to find a scientific way of doing it,” he muttered.
“Has he ever asked you about that?”
“Not in so many words, no. But I’m guessing it’s not the mystical world he’s interested in, if it can’t be measured and monitored and explained with numbers?” He shrugged lightly, still not sure what the immortal thought was different between the world of science and Gabe’s world. The fact they all existed in the one ‘world’ he thought would be enough, but apparently not. It had been something he’d found fascinating with Izzy, that she was actually looking at making a connection between their world and the mechanical world most people lived in. He was lost in thought for a few moments, wondering what the other magic-user was up to, and how she was going.
“Penny for your thoughts,” Brianna said, seeing Gabe’s eyes looking into places beyond where they were. She was tempted to ‘check-in’ but had vowed she would never do that to friends, unless they knew, or asked her. Or as she sometimes found now, she started to receive something she was referring to as ‘p-mail’.
Gabe grinned as he looked across at her. “Just wondering why I never thought of introducing Izzy to the good doctor. Maybe between the two of them they might have come up with an amazing revelation!”
Brianna thought for a moment and shrugged. “Or a complete disaster!” She lowered her fork back to the plate and leaned back in the chair.
Gabe laughed and scooped up the last of the tasty treat on the plate. “Yeah, I guess there’s that too. So… tell me about the redecorations, and what you have in mind,” he continued before popping the last of the dessert into his mouth.
A description of what Brianna had in mind was explained, “and each room will have its own theme, depending on the room, and what it feels like. I want to have some artwork, original pieces mostly, that will make the rooms feel like someone’s home, or enhance the theme of being a room that’s more a ‘home away from home’, given that’s been the theme of the place since it was set up.”
Gabe found himself thinking about a small gallery he’d come across while wandering around the arts district and mentioned it to Brianna. “There was a piece there, a sculpture, that if you wanted to design a room around say an aquatic theme, would be perfect!” he told her with a wide grin as he picked up his cup of coffee. “I can give you the address, if you like.”
Brianna’s eyes widened a little. “The wizard has been visiting galleries in town?!” she noted with a sly smile. “Was there much else of interest there?”
“If you mean anything other than the art? I don’t know, I only saw this piece of sculpture through the window as I was passing by, but it made me stop and look. If I wasn’t already on my way to an appointment I would have gone inside, but I didn’t,” he went on to explain.
Brianna nodded with a knowing smile. “Good excuse, but as it caught your attention I guess it’s a good place to start my search. What was it like, this sculpture?”
Gabe paused as he recalled the piece, explaining it briefly. “A case of rock turning to water and flowing like the sea,” he said simply, giving Brianna a wink and lowering his sleeve to the table. Bilson immediately made use of the bridge and was quickly gone from sight. “And with that, I bid you adieu,” he added, standing up and leaning over to give Brianna a light kiss on the forehead.
“Let me know when you’re going and I might try and drop by. I think my sister would also like this piece, and you know how exacting she is!”
Brianna laughed softly, having catered to Gabe’s sister on a number of occasions now. She had literally been terrified of her at first, but after a few visits she’d come to grow used to the expectations and had been grateful for a staff who’d been adaptable and willing to cater to the woman’s demands.
“If it meets with her approval it must be special!” Brianna concluded as Gabe straightened up and gave her a wink. Her eyes followed the Greek’s departure from the restaurant area, and she sat for a while longer, thinking, before collecting the dishes and carrying them through to the kitchen.
