Velveteen Rabbit
Who: Rhiannon, Brad, Shimmer, Tasha, Open
What: Drinks, Talking
When: Present, Night
Where: Velveteen Rabbit Cocktail Bar, Arts District, Las Vegas
For anyone looking to pay a moderate price for a craft cocktail or local beer without the crush of tourism, the Arts District promised a few venues, popular with both out-of-towners and locals. The Velveteen Rabbit was such a place. Outside, the building was a nondescript block of concrete with the neon silhouette of a rabbit framed in wrought iron. Inside, the exposed wood ceiling and brushed concrete floor gave it the feel of a speakeasy. The decor was softened by wallpaper and a collection of vintage furniture and area rugs. There were chaise lounges, settees, and high-back chairs upholstered in velvet. The paint and lighting scheme of greens, purples, and golds added to a lush atmosphere.
At the bar, the menu was scrawled on black chalkboards with ornate frames. A golden rabbit statue posed like the Buddha. Piles of loose change and paper money surrounded him.
In the back of the property, a fenced patio separated the venue from its neighbors and the street. People smoked in corners or chatted in semi-private areas created by umbrellas and drapery. Large light bulbs dangled from wires overhead. By 11:00 p.m., the temperature had dropped to a tolerable eighty degrees, so it was possible to sit in the dry breeze in relative comfort.
Rhiannon sat on a low, concrete wall, her eyes on the scrolling screen of her phone. Two cocktail glasses rested next to her. One was drained, the other filled with a drink named Death Becomes Her. It contained vodka, dolin blanc, swedish punsch, campari cranberry, and an absinthe ice sphere. She stubbed out a cigarette and sent a text. The dress code for the cocktail bar was casual, so she could get away with a pair of black jeans and a tie back shirt.
