John didn't look around. If Shelly was there, he would have caught sight or scent of her by now. "No, she's not. Our relationship is..." The vampire caught himself at a loss for words. Was it casual sex? A deeper friendship? A romance? They had never spoken about it or asked those questions of one another. He knew that she occupied a number of his thoughts and that he had put her in a strange, one-of-a-kind box in his mind, not to be obsessed over or infatuated with because he didn't want to ruin what they had or burn through it too quickly. He could be a ruiner. Shelly was not the sort of person he wanted to see unresponsive on his arm with a ragged set of holes in her neck.
