Investigations: Witch killer
When: 22nd December 2020
It had been a week since the body of Shannon Foust had been found. And the bodies of the three victims from the first case had been resting in the morgue for two weeks. JD was frustrated at the lack of progress on both that case, and the Henry case, all of which were leaving the medical examiners with 'no clear indications of cause of death'.
So it had been odd, and a little puzzling, when the County Medical Examiner had called him and asked him to come to see him. ASAP. It had been odder still when JD had been told the information, or lack of, that the ME had managed to ascertain from the autopsies.
“There’s nothing to match any of the wounds on any database, nor is there anything to match the … goop we’ve retrieved from inside the wounds.” JD had taken another look at the four bodies, the ME and his assistant showing him why these couldn’t be matched.
“It’s like it’s been done by an animal, but none that we have any records of anywhere,” the man said with a frown. “But some of them are almost clean edged, like this one,” he indicated what looked like a clean slice across the abdomen of one of the first victims, “which when you compare it to this…” He held up the cloth covering the lower abdomen and JD’s face screwed up. The gaping wound was clearly not surgically created.
“Could it have been more than one attacker?” he asked.
“It could have, yes, but we can’t find anything to give us a clear evidence of two. No DNA, no saliva, just that…” he points at the petri dish that was being held out by the assistant, a milky-yellow coloured viscous ‘goop’. He took the dish, and looked up at the two men in lab coats. “How much of this have you got?”
“We managed to get samples from all victims, some are still with forensics.” The ME held his hands out and shrugged. "They're trying to track back through databases the Smithsonian has created and been updating, but nada..."
“Can I take this?” JD asked. “I might know someone who could recognise something. It's a long shot, but worth a try.”
The ME nodded. "Sure, any help would be good."
“Thanks, I’ll let you know what I find out.”
JD pocketed the dish carefully and headed out to his car.
