Freedom was only one immediate goal. It was useless without the means by which to slake other desires. The need to inflict harm, pain and suffering. The appetite to extract a price - and flesh - from the living surrounding it.
But as energised as this location was, it needed to split the most likeliest of candidates into smaller groups. Then... Then they would be easier. So, from outside, a blood-curdling scream could be heard. Not one for physical ears, though. Of the eight gathered, only half their number would hear it, sent, as it was, through a telepathic signal. Something heard only by the mind, not ears.
The rest would hear nothing. Would have no reason to snap to the call of agony from outiside, like James, Abigail, Celeste and Radek. The remaining four left inside, making just as easy targets.
