Neptune Laboratories, INC. P.O. Box 784 Neptune, CA 90187 (800) 637-8863
Dear Student,
As you are preparing to head back to school we would like to inform you of the exciting partnership between your school and Neptune Laboratories, INC. (NLI) As a sponsor for your school district, NLI will be investing money into the academic and athletic programs to better enhance the school, beginning with this initial gift. Yes, that is correct, the laptop you are receiving in this package is yours to keep simply for being a student at Sunnydale High School or Forks High School. You are probably asking what is the catch, as anyone would be doing receiving a free computer out of the blue. We would like to think there is no catch, however, there is something we would like you to do for us.
When you turn on your computer you will notice an icon on your desktop entitled "Neptune Journal Network". We ask that you click the link and set up a journal, which will immediately connect you to the journal every other registered student in both Sunnydale High School and Forks High School. The network is on a private server, and not readable by the public. Once you have created your journal, you will be able to access it from any computer with a password - but the only way to read any of these journals is by logging into the system. This, of course, is for your privacy.
To return the favor of the gift, we only ask that you write in your journal through out the school year. About what, you ask? Anything! The purpose of this project is to see how communication impacts the relationships with your peers - both within your own school, and those attending your rival school.
While we have already mentioned that the computer is yours to keep, without obligation, we do have other rewards in place for the school district that makes best use of the journals, as well as scholarships and other prizes for students who go above and beyond in this project. If you are familiar with other blogging sites, such as LiveJournal, InsaneJournal, Scribbld, etc.. this network operates similarly, only with a few less features. Public posts can be read by anyone on the NJN, however, custom filters can create entries only readable by certain groups. The NJN has no way to monitor what is written in filtered posts, nor can your teachers, however, we will be able to tell that filtered and private posts were created - without knowing the content. You can feel secure in knowing that your filtered posts and private posts are not being read by unwanted eyes. We do not have use of icons, like public journal services might, instead, the student's name and the logo of their school will appear every time they make an entry or comment on another entry.
The computers can be used for more than just journaling, they are fully functioning state of the art laptops for you to use however you might want. Browse the internet, shop online, do your homework, chat with messengers, etc.. It is statistically proven that having one's own computer and regular access to the internet can have a huge impact on their academic performance, and we at NLI hope this social project will have such an impact on every participating student.
Sincerely,
Stephen McManus, CEO of Neptune Laboratories, INC.
