Summary: Sirius wakes up to life in the Potter home.
Status: Open

Sirius hadn't slept well, not that he would ever admit it to anyone. What sleep he did get had been full of nightmares and fitful dreams. All of it ending with Sirius standing in a closed off room with the veil, watching it waft toward him as incoherent voices called to him from just beyond it. Every time he tried to move closer to see what was beyond the veiled archway, he woke up in a cold sweat.

On the umpteenth time of waking up, Sirius finally decided that sleeping wasn't going to happen.

He stared up at the ceiling for several minutes of the unfamiliar room before tugging the pillow free from behind his head and covering his face with it.

Best way to get rid of frustration?

Growl into the pillow for a moment.

That done, Sirius allowed the pillow to drop onto the floor and swung his legs over, sitting up to peer around at the room. He still didn't entirely understand what he'd done to earn a kid being named after him.

Sirius blinked, another thought crossing his mind.

It was infuriating that everyone he ran into now  knew about his animagus. Couldn't a bloke have any secrets?

Jamie and Al were probably still sleeping. Her mum was at school, and her dad ... could be anywhere. Which meant that she was on her own for breakfast. Which was pretty much par for the course.

Slipping a dressing gown on over her PJs, Lily headed downstairs. She did glance to the room Sirius was sleeping in, but ... well. He probably had a lot to deal with and didn't want to be bothered.

Her grandmother's door was closed as well, but Lily presumed the other witch would be out eventually.

She was just kind of tickled that they'd had three of the returned dead in the house. She half expected her grandfather to pop up, honestly. Stepping into the kitchen, she started to get things together for a proper breakfast - bacon, eggs, toast, and tea.

Breakfast.

Sirius, through all his sulking and feeling sorry for himself, smelled breakfast. He couldn't help it. He wanted to continue his pity party, but his stomach demanded attention. It demanded he man up and get to wherever the bacon was.

His goal in life was to find it, assess its edibility, and devour it in one gulp.

And then he would have two more. To savor.

Hopping up from the bed, Sirius wandered around the room until he remembered where the mirror was and eyed his rumpled clothes critically. They would do.

Sirius smoothed his hair down, yawned widely, and headed down stairs toward the smell from the kitchen. He didn't hear anyone chatting, so he was curious who was up and about.

"Morning," Sirius greeted as he stepped into the kitchen. The girl looked a little like Lily. He vaguely recalled catching a glance of her at some point, but he couldn't remember if he'd ever heard her name.

"Are you some sort of mini-Evans?"

Lily grinned when Sirius entered the kitchen. "Something like that. I'm her granddaughter and named after her. Lily Luna," she added for Sirius' benefit. "Suppose to save confusion, everyone's calling me LilyLu." She gestured to what she'd had laid out and had started cooking. "Breakfast?"

She wasn't sure what he liked, or how he liked it, but she was game for trying new things this morning. "How're you settling in?" she continued before she gestured a little. "Some of my cousins and friends are going out shopping today, if you wanted to go with. Or I'm sure Lily or my dad could take you if you don't want to go with the lot of them," she added, prattling on contently.

She was trying to keep her information overload under control, but ... well. She was who she was.

LilyLu. More information to keep track of. Goody.

At least it was an actual living, breathing person, though. It was starting to make Sirius sick to his stomach to keep up with everyone who was now dead and in what brutal way they were killed.

None of which he should think about at the breakfast table unless he wanted this girl's first real impression of him to be losing his dinner on the floor.

"Might go with Evans -- Lily," Sirius corrected himself, frowning slightly. It still felt odd to say it, but he couldn't think of Lily as an Evans anymore. She'd gone and married his best mate, surreal as it was.

Sirius shrugged slightly, bypassing an answer on how the settling was going.

"I smelled bacon," Sirius offered helpfully. "I thought if I were to come down and bat my eyes a bit, I might get some scraps."

It was so weird hearing him so casually refer to Lily as Evans. Oh, she knew that's what Lily had been to him; she wasn't even dating James in the time Sirius came from. "I'm sure she'd be glad to take you," Lily offered, though she was sure of no such thing. She'd popped in to say goodnight to Lily last night and was pretty sure she'd caught her grandmother crying.

But really, she had a lot to cry about, Lily guessed. Still, Lily had struck her as a very helpful being, and surely she'd be glad to help out Sirius.

She grinned to Sirius. "Wonder if I should make you beg for it," she teased him. "Heard you were a bit of a big puppy dog," she continued as she added a few more strips of bacon to the pan. "You want any toast or eggs? Juice, milk, or tea? Pretty sure alcohol is off limits for breakfast," she warned in case he had that idea.

Truthfully, Sirius had been eyeing the liquor cabinet longingly as LilyLu prattled on. As much as he tried to keep it at bay with the new day, the ragged feeling of desperation kept gnawing at the back of his mind. He felt like he should be out doing something, but he was years past the point where there was something to do.

Sirius shook his head, shaking the dark thoughts off for a moment.

"It goes great with bacon and toast," he wheedled, focusing hard to turn on the charm and off the cloud of gloom.

It didn't work as well as it normally did, but Sirius still managed a half-watt version of his winning smirk.

"I'm old enough to be your grandfather, technically. 's not right to tell a bloke he's banned from the alcohol by time of day."

"Right, and technically you're my great-godfather or something, if things like that even carry down, but really. Do you want to be drunk and hungover all day? I'm sure you can get your own when you're out," she added with a grin.

"Besides, imagine shopping drunk? The clothing you'll buy? It wouldn't match and you'd regret all your wardrobe decisions," she added as she scooped some of the bacon onto a plate before she started in on the eggs. The toast popped up and she added that one-handed to the plate before she gestured. "There's jam in the icebox or peanut butter in the cupboard. Dunno what you like on your toast in the morning."

She also got out the juice and milk, though she'd make tea if he'd rather have that.

He was old! Technically. But the idea still didn't sit right with him. Sirius pulled a face, thoroughly displeased with the idea of ageing. He would rather not get on with that, thanks.

For now, Sirius was going to pretend he was just sixteen. Nothing past that with no idea what his future might hold at this point.

It at least lifted his spirits slightly. Creating his own realities was a life saver sometimes.

"You don't think I'd look handsome in pink and orange?" Sirius wondered, pulling an expression of mock horror into place. "'s why I'm brilliant, you know. I look so bloody pretty in anything that I can go into the shop stone drunk looking for clothes."

After a moment's consideration, Sirius selected the juice.

"So're you lot about to go back to classes?" Sirius asked, plucking at his rumpled Gryffindor uniform for emphasis.

"Well, you'd look handsome in anything," she pointed out lightly, grinning at him. "But the clashing orange and pink might distract from your otherwise handsome exterior."

Lily nodded to his question. "On the first, yeah. Al and I are headed back, but Jamie's free. 'least this is my last year of potions." She pulled a face. "Honestly, did you know Lily was ... so into potions? She actually went to go talk to Professor Stirling about ... I don't know. Learning or apprenticing or something. It's horrible. Why would anyone do that to themselves?" She paused. "You're not a fan of potions, are you?"

Carrying her own breakfast to the table, she settled down and picked up a piece of her toast. "Did you need anything else?" she inquired as an afterthought, uncertain if she was meant to play hostess or not. Was he really a guest since he was technically kind of sort of family?

Sirius smirked a little. For him, he'd just seen Lily a few days ago in class outshining the lot of them with her potions work. Remus had been struggling to stay awake because of some reason (Sirius may have been sitting on the end of his bed regaling him with stories of his escape from the house and how he'd left Kreacher tied and gagged for his mum to find in the morning), and James had been trying to suggest to Lily that they become study partners.

He'd had negative success.

"This is it for me," Sirius decided, tapping a finger against his glass of juice and gesturing to what he had already.

Sirius busied himself with making a bacon sandwich while he talked. "S'pose they might try to send me back," he mused. "'ve got sixth and seventh year to get through yet."

The prospect was still unsettling, but maybe Hogwarts would be just what he needed to get back on his feet.

Or to miss Prongs and the others more.

"Year above me," she said with a slight pout. Too bad, that; she would've liked to have had him in her classes. "I bet they'll get someone to tutor you though. I mean, to try to catch you up with the current state of things," she added.

She wondered who. Likely a Ravenclaw because they were all studious and the like. If he was lucky, he'd get someone like Tris or Landon. If he wasn't so lucky, he get some stuffed shirt prat who was all serious business about the work.

"It's something to do, anyway, and you could probably try out for the quidditch team and such. We lost a lot of players because they were all seventh years."

Sirius didn't think he could go for Quidditch without James on the team. It would just be too awkward. But... then again...

"'s there a Beater position open?" Sirius wondered, peering over the top of his juice at Lily. "I might go out for that while I'm failing my classes. You think they'd grade me easier? Trauma and all."

Shaking his head, Sirius leaned back in his chair and folded his hands behind his head. "What about Seeker? I need to know more about the team before I decide if you lot are in my good graces enough for me to help you win the Cup."

"Probably. And if not, you could fight for it. Play the 'I'm famous' card. That'd probably fly." Lily grinned. "The trauma card would probably work on some of the professors. But not the real hard-arses." Professor Stirling came to mind, though if she was being completely and utterly fair, she really did screw around more than usual in his class.

She supposed she'd have to ... behave this year since she was a prefect. Then she could drop it the year after that, and all would be well.

"Bet you could con my dad into getting you a really nice broom. You got him one; only seems fair, doesn't it?" She frowned. "Not that you ... remember ... getting him one. That was way later, when you were way older."

She looked thoughtful. "I might try out for the team. Now that Jamie's not there, they need a Potter on the team."

Brooms.

The thought lit up Sirius' world like a firework as he swiftly calculated the improvements in brooms over the years and how much more Utterly Impossibly Fast they would be now. It almost made him giddy.

"What sorts out?" Sirius asked, ignoring all other threads of conversation and honing in. "D'you know what the speeds are like now? Anything like that?"

And which Quidditch teams were still 'round?

School was a load of bollocks compared to everything he'd missed in the world of Quidditch over the years.

"Jamie's probably got some catalogues," Lily offered. "He could probably talk your ear off about brooms. I mean, he is a quidditch player." Well, a reserve quidditch player, but still. He was definitely up to date on all of that, right?

"I don't really follow all that much," she admitted before she shrugged.

She was pleased that he seemed pleased though, and she happily crunched a bit of her bacon, swinging her legs slightly. "Be weird, having you in my commons," she mused. "On the team. Think they'd let you? I mean... don't see why they wouldn't, since ... you'd be a student, same as anyone else."

"I'll have a row with the first bloke who says I can't play," Sirius boasted, sliding off his chair and holding the remains of his sandwich in his mouth as he brushed himself free of crumbs.

Quidditch. In all the avalanche of information that'd come his way, Sirius hadn't thought about what a relief Quidditch would be. But would it be the same without his best mate egging him on?

Sirius shook himself free of that thought dog-like before beginning to wander around the kitchen.

He just couldn't sit still. Things seemed to catch up to him if he did.

"We've still got Nick, haven't we?" Sirius asked, eyeing the cabinets speculatively. "'s there anything off the wall odd that's happened since I've been out of the loop?"

She watched him pacing around, brows lifting slightly. "Be interesting to see. Should probably brush up on your hexes then. Jamie and I have..."

Lily cocked her head, her lips pursing slightly as a moderately disturbing thought crossed her mind. "Suppose you'll be wanting your map then? If you're headed back to school?"

She was highly, highly disinclined to give it up. She had plans for that map, dammit. But it only seemed fair to offer it back to its creators. Well, one of its creators.

"Right, we've still got Nick. 'less he's come back to life." Which made her wonder what would happen if the phenomenon spread to the castle ghosts.

Huh.

"Anyway, like I was saying. Jamie's invented tons of hexes I bet he could share with you."

Brush up...

Sirius nearly laughed. He doubted there would be few enough new ones that just 'brushing up' would do it for him, but he wouldn't fuss to Lily over details.

Disregarding that this wasn't his house or James', Sirius opened a cabinet, feeling rather let down when all the greeted him was Tupperware. He'd been hoping for firewhiskey. At this rate, he was going to need to wander out of the house and head for the nearest pub.

"Map?" he said, startled out of rifling through what was, essentially, a stranger's cabinet. "My map?"

The map?

"You've got it?" Sirius didn't know how... he supposed James might have left it to his kid and then LilyLu had somehow got it. Good to know they'd all made something that lasted. "Y... es? I'd rather if I could have it back, yeah."

It'd be nice to have something of his own back. Even if it was aged half a century.

She watched him prowl through the cabinets and shook her head. "Over the icebox," she offered, reasoning he was after the alcohol again.

"And yes, your map. My uncles nicked it from Filch's office back when my dad was still in school, gave it to him. Jamie swiped it his second year, and apparently gave it back 'cause I swiped it from dad's office just the other day.

"I'm also going to pretend I never told you I had it so you'll have to go see if you can find it yourself."

She quirked a brow, daring him to challenge her before she grinned impishly, kind of hoping he did.

Sirius crowed in triumph as her directions finally led him to his prize. He closed the cabinet again without retrieving anything, though. He'd come back when no one was around and he really needed it.

Moving back to where Lily was sitting, Sirius propped his elbows on the counter and nicked some of her food if there was any left.

"You sure you want to do that?" Sirius inquired innocently. "I mean... I'd hate for you to not give it back and have a series of unfortunate things happen to you at Hogwarts."

Sirius wouldn't mind going out of his way to make LilyLu's life a little more interesting 'til he got the map back.

"Oh, my darling Sirius. Jamie has trained me well. So very well. If you attempt to procure the map by force, I'll start off by telling all the girls in school you have undead cooties and no one will date you. Then, things will get much, much worse from there."

Really, if she was going to engage him in warfare, she'd need to get Jamie to give her a few pointers, but she still had a few days.

Besides, she'd likely end up giving him the map if they could work out some sort of timeshare.

"What lump of a git didn't properly pass down through the hallowed halls of Hogwarts the brilliance of the Marauders?" Sirius wondered, aghast. He tapped a finger on the counter, giving LilyLu his Serious Business look.

Obvious some horrible failing had happened on the part of the Hogwarts student body if tales of his exploits weren't still told around the common room fires.

Sirius was distressed.

Putting on a careful, patronizing smile, Sirius attempted to pat LilyLu on the head. "You poor, poor girl. You're obviously a sweet kid. So I'll give you the chance to slide the map under my door before midnight tomorrow. That's generous, yeah?"

"No dice. I'll share it with you. Let you have it long enough to make a proper copy. But I'm not just going to hand it over. I nicked it fair and square, and it only seems fair that I get to keep it, yeah?"

She smiled. "And you can get all sorts of new stories circulating. There's a whole crowd of people that don't know you that you can convince of your amazing talents. And whatnot." She waved a dismissive hand.

This was actually kind of fun, and she bet he and Jamie would get along pretty well. Too bad Jamie was out of school.

Sirius stared. A proper... A copy? No, really he thought not.

"All or nothing," Sirius decided, smirking. "Afraid that map wasn't meant to go out of Marauder hands. You'll have to figure it out on your own if you want to make a copy."

As for amazing talents... Sirius grinned a little. It was true -- he was amazing. With as much talent as he had, it couldn't be that hard to be kicking back and passing without trying again at Hogwarts.

"Nothing, then. I'll hang onto it 'til I figure out how to remake it, and then maybe I'll give you back the original. If you're nice." She grinned wickedly before taking another nibble of her toast, wondering what sort of protest he'd come up with to that.

Come to think of it, having him in the commons wouldn't be so unlike having Jamie there. Except without the overprotective big brother aspect. Which meant pranking and snogging without worry of Jamie butting in.

Lily was very inclined to experiment with snogging this year.

Sirius pondered for a moment which tactic to go with, then decided that the direct approach to getting the map back was the best one. It'd be easier when he could spell all her stuff upside down, but there was no harm getting a muggle start early on.

"Which one did you say your room was again?" Sirius asked, picture of innocence. "And would you say you're more apt to keep valuables in your trunk or in the closet?"

Lily grinned. "I am more inclined to say I'm not apt to tell you where I hide my valuables, nor am I inclined to share which room is mine. I am not as silly or vapid as you apparently think I am, Sirius."

She tilted her head before she slipped out of the chair to start gathering the breakfast dishes. "Besides, if you can't remember which room's mine, or reason it out by process of elimination, I have to question all the tales my dad told us about you and your brilliance."

"Everything was vastly exaggerated," Sirius assured her with a flourish and a bow. "You should underestimate me at every turn while I nip upstairs to go through your things 'til your parents catch me."

Sirius tapped a finger to his chin, then shrugged.

"I suppose I'll make my excuse that we were snogging and I lost my tie in your trunk."

It seemed plausible enough to Sirius. And a great way to start his first long conversation with the Potter parents.

"Wouldn't go that route if I were you. Mum tends to hex first and ask questions later. Jamie's the same way and he's very protective of me. If he hears you've been snogging me, he might not let you live long enough to explain yourself."

She looked thoughtful. "Though really, if you are going to die for snogging me, you may as well do the crime, yeah?" She winked over her shoulder as she settled the dishes in the dishwasher after scraping them off.

"Besides, the map's not in my room. I reasoned you'd go after it after I told you about it," she fibbed.

Sirius lifted one eyebrow, then pulled his wand out from where he'd stuffed it in the back pocket of his school trousers. He twirled it casually between his fingers for a moment (mostly to show off), then pointed it in the vague direction of the upstairs bedrooms.

"Well, that means I should just accio the map, yeah?" Sirius asked, holding off from actually casting the spell in case the Ministry didn't like his puppy dog face enough to cut him that much slack.

"Doesn't work. Jamie rigged it so people can't accio it." Lie, lie, lie. "Besides, you're not of age either, even if you're technically like, sixty something years old," she pointed out.

Which was weird.

And kind of disturbing. So she decided not to go any further in that direction. She glanced around the kitchen to make sure it was clean enough before she spun on a heel and darted for the stairs. If necessary, she'd tackle the map to keep it in her room and her possession.

"Oi!" Sirius yelled, momentarily surprised before starting off at a dead run after her.

He slowed when he'd gone up only a few steps, though, then finally ground to a halt. What was the point of trying to take the Map back now? He'd have it soon enough. And the world needed a little bit of a reminder that Sirius was around again, didn't it?

"You'll wish you'd just handed it over," Sirius called smugly, heading up to go back to his room. "Don't forget that you've still got til midnight~."

He wouldn't wait that long to put a plan into action. Sirius liked giving false hope, though.

Lily laughed as she ducked into her room, closing the door behind herself. That had been entertaining, and amusing, and it made her realize she needed to find a really, really good hiding place for the map.

Though she supposed eventually she would hand it over.

Just ... not quite yet.
