Time/Date: Evening, August 26, 2023
Location: Potter home, Godric's Hollow
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily tries to adjust to young!Sirius
Status: Complete

When she arrived home from her adventure in the Alleys with a stack of job applications, she was informed they'd be bringing Sirius to the Potter home that evening. He would be, at least for the moment, given use of James Sirius' room - and the irony of that wasn't lost on anyone.

Lily had started in on the applications while waiting for him to arrive. She knew he was younger, was student age. She knew, too, that when he'd been that age, they hadn't been friends. She was still a year off from dating James and thus becoming accepted by Sirius, and Lily didn't know what to think of that.

All she could do was draw parallels. What if James was that young? Or younger? She couldn't well marry a 16 year old James. She doubted she'd have anything in common with him when he was that age.

She realized it was pointless, needless worry; James might not ever come back, and she was trying to cross bridges that hadn't even presented themselves yet.

Halfway through her third application, she heard the door which meant it was most likely Sirius' arrival. Setting aside the quill, she rose and moved to the hallway in front of the door and waited. She was strangely nervous, and she hoped everything would go well.

A glance to the stairs showed her that Lily Luna was patiently waiting for an opportunity to pounce, and Lily hoped that the girl waited until Sirius had had a chance to settle in somewhat.

In the time since his appearance at the Ministry, Sirius had seen enough for it to actually strike home that Nathaniel was telling the truth. Initially he had wanted to see Lily to get confirmation that this was a joke, but now he just wanted to see a familiar face.

Even if they weren't on good terms. Unless they were? He still couldn't exactly wrap his mind around Prongs managing to even date Evans. If Moony was around, he'd owe him a galleon. Or ten. He couldn't remember how much they'd upped the bet with each unsuccessful attempt to woo.

And on top of everything, he had no idea how he felt about staying with the family of his best mate's son.

After knocking on the door, Sirius waited a few moments before a boy roughly his age with dark hair opened the door.

"Sirius Black?" Albus wondered, already moving to step back and out of the way.

"Yeah." Sirius frowned slightly, stepping in when Al motioned for him to.

"Albus Potter."

Sirius nodded, not entirely concerned with memorizing names yet.

But Albus?

That sort of got his attention a little. It was almost enough to prod at his sense of humor. He was trying to superimpose an image of Dumbledore onto a kid not much older than himself.

"Er... make yourself at home." Albus still couldn't get over the slightly awkward feeling of housing lots of dead relatives.

Familiar and unfamiliar, all at the same time. "Oh, love," she said softly, sadly, as she stepped toward him. It hurt more than she thought it possibly could to see a version of her friend so much younger.

Before they'd been friends. Before he'd grown on her. Before she'd dated, then married, his best mate.

Offering Albus a faint smile that she rather hoped he'd take as 'I would like to talk to Sirius alone, if you don't mind', she reached out her hands for Sirius. "Do you want anything to eat, or drink, or ... do you just want to talk?"

"Sure," Al agreed, offering Lily a weak smile in return before moving off. He tapped his sister on the arm on his way up toward his room.

He thought it would be best if she left her hovering position, but he would let her decided to do what she wanted.

Evans was Evans. There was no mistaking the house mate he had lived with for six years, but it was strange seeing her aged. He couldn't keep up with how old everyone was supposed to be now, but marriage seemed like it would have been something that took a while.

"Drink, I think," Sirius decided.

Something a little stronger than butterbeer would be nice.

As for talking... Sirius didn't know about that. He tried a smirk that fell a little flat.

"Several drinks. Five. And a half. And three more."

Lily nodded. Reaching out, she brushed her fingers over his hair and tried not to look as distraught as she was. "What have they told you so far?" Surely they'd at least covered the circumstances of his death. Of her and James' deaths.

Turning to the kitchen, she let herself into the liquor cabinet to get down the drinks. She hesitated a moment; this wasn't eighteen year old Sirius - this was sixteen year old Sirius. Should she really be giving him alcohol?

But it wasn't like he couldn't handle it. Likely had been into it before. Shrugging to her thoughts, she poured him a drink and carried it over before gesturing to the couch.

Sirius froze, uncertain how to react to Lily. He was relieved of deciding when Lily moved away.

It was too strange. And it didn't help that in the back of his mind she was serving as a constant reminder that James wasn't here. That was crowding at the majority of his thoughts as he went to sit down numbly on the couch.

"Cheers," Sirius muttered, shoving his hair back from his face. "'s bit odd, this."

"I know," she said softly. She sat down beside him, though she kept some distance between them. Sixteen year old him wasn't close to her, at all, and Lily felt a little hurt. She'd wanted familiarity, and while she had it now ... he didn't know her. Not like his older self knew her. It wasn't his fault, of course, but all the same she still felt strangely gypped.

Clasping her hands in her lap, she glanced over to him.

Her lips parted, but she really didn't know where to begin. What would she have wanted someone to say to her? "It ... if it isn't over, there's a chance he'll come back, too," Lily said gently. "Remus too."

But hopefully not Peter, because she wasn't completely sure she could see him and not at least try to kill him.

Sirius didn't even bother to reply until he had downed the entire drink in one go. It burned, but that was what was refreshing about it. At least he was feeling something. He didn't prefer the numbness that had settled over him since the Ministry.

"So out of all the lot that died, they could come back," Sirius said slowly. "And be married blokes who I've never met."

Yeah. He didn't see how this was going to help him.

"Have you figured out what the point is? Of being back?"

Normally Sirius wouldn't have started half-ranting to Evans, but he was bitter and everything was already weighing on his mind. What was the point of coming back to life if he had less than half his memories and everyone he knew had no idea how to interact with him since he had regressed from whatever person he should have become.

She didn't know what to say to that. If James came back at twenty-one as well, that would be a significant gap in their ages. And yes, he'd be a married bloke, but Lily couldn't see there being too much of a problem between them reconnecting.

Remus she knew had grown up, married, and had a son ... and Lily wasn't really in a rush to share that tidbit with Sirius just now. So it was possible then that Remus could come back older than her ... which would further the rift.

"I'm ... no one's worked out anything about it other than the fact it's still going on. They don't know what caused it or why it's happening, or if there's any reason certain people are coming back, or why some of them are younger."

She hesitated. "Professor Dumbledore came back ... and he's young. Not ... young like us, but younger than he was. Half his age, maybe, from when we knew him."

Lily stared down at her hands. "I want to tell you it'll all be all right, but ... I can't. It's weird, and not right, and I miss him so much," she whispered. "And what can we do about it? We're here, now, displaced from our lives and time and we just have to ... cope. Deal. Move on."

Move on? That was all fine and dandy to say, but Sirius was having a little trouble coming up with a brilliant scheme for that. He had been thinking about what he would do after Hogwarts, but he had another term to think about it and more options before this happened.

What was he supposed to do thrown out of school so suddenly with absolute no one to fall back on?

There were the new Potters, but he didn't know them. And Sirius Black wasn't a charity case.

"Don't rightly know what I'm supposed to move on to." Sirius looked up, giving the nearest piece of furniture a baleful glare. "Don't know how long they expect me to stay here."

"School, I should think," Lily offered. She tried to smile, but it was disturbing - all she could think about was James coming back at fifteen, or sixteen. How impossible that would be to deal with. James had grown up into a man she could love, but at Sirius' age ... he'd been intolerable.

"It's somewhere to go," she added softly. "Something to do. Completely unfamiliar and horrible, I'm sure but ... what else would you do?"

She couldn't even imagine going back to school. Granted, she was past that, married and a mother in her own time, but she couldn't imagine what it was going to be like for Sirius.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered as she reached out to stroke his hair back gently, despite the awkward angle.

Sirius laughed hollowly, rubbing at his face. He felt Lily's hand and decided to keep his face in his hands rather than looking at her. She was reminding him a lot of Prongs' mum and it was awkward.

"How many years behind am I going to be?" He had rather liked how things were set up before. He didn't have to work hard to get the grades. Now he would have to work to catch up.

He wouldn't even know anyone. Or have Remus to figure out topics to write on.

He wouldn't even have Snivellus to intimidate. Or his brother to ignore.

Would he?

"Do you know... which Blacks are still around?" Sirius wondered.

Lily shook her head. "Ah. Half a century, give or take," she admitted with a slight wince. "I'm sure ... the professors will help you catch up. I ... I have some potions and charms books if you wanted to start with that."

A faint smile ghosted across her lips, but she didn't know how to relate to sixteen year old Sirius, and that was fast becoming apparent. "Could probably use Lily's or Al's books, too," she continued. Not that he would, she imagined, but ... this was different. This wasn't keeping current; this was learning almost 50 years of new material.

Blacks still around. Lily shook her head slightly. "Narcissa ... married Lucius. They have a son Harry's age. They're still alive. Andromeda was raising --" She cut herself off and hesitated. "Ah. Remus' son. He married Nymphadora, but they both fell in the last battle. She's still about. They're all old, of course, but..."

Lily licked her lips. "Regulus ... he. He betrayed Voldemort, and died to do it. When he was eighteen, he stole a horcrux, replaced it with a fake and ...died there." She wondered how Sirius would take that. She honestly didn't know how he was standing with his brother at sixteen, or what he'd think about Reg turning traitor to the Death Eaters.

Sirius froze, processing that.

Reg dead?

Sure, he hated the obedient little toerag and thought he was a mindless minion to whoever he thought their parents would approve of, but he'd never wanted him dead, specifically. His brother was fourteen. Even Sirius wasn't spiteful enough to wish that bad a fate on him.

"Horcrux?" Sirius asked, staring hard at the floor.

He didn't recognize that term.

"I don't understand it exactly. Harry explained it, but it ... well, it sounded horrific. I think ... the way he explained it was there was a spell that Voldemort could do. It ... it split his soul when he killed a person, and he was able to put that bit into an object. This ... this was how he came back when he should have died when he tried to ... to kill Harry."

Lily exhaled a shaky breath. "He made ... seven. Harry destroyed all of them, so he can't come back again, but ..." Lily shook her head and rose.

She retreated to the kitchen before returning with another drink for Sirius; she reasoned he could use it.

"Thanks." Sirius didn't drink this one immediately. Instead, he held it with his elbows propped on his knees, contemplating the glass as he tried to connect together what he wanted to say next.

"So... how did... What happened? Where was I when he... showed up?"

Even asking the question twinged again at the pain that was lurking just beneath the surface. It was hard to think of Prongs dying. He had never pictured it. The curse of youth, he supposed. He and James had been convinced that they were invincible.

It took Lily a moment to switch gears enough to guess at what he was asking. Of course he'd be concerned about James.

"Ah. It ..." She sighed. "It was Peter." Lily paused as she realized she'd have to rewind a fair bit; Sirius wasn't aware of any of this. "When ... Voldemort heard a prophecy that a boy born at the end of summer would be marked as his equal, or ... would be the end of him, he targeted us. James and me. There was another boy it could have been, the Longbottom's son - Frank and Alice. But .... he picked us.

"When we went into hiding, you ... you and James insisted Peter be made the secret keeper. Said it made more sense. Said of course they'd come after you because you'd be the obvious choice, and no one would suspect Peter."

Lily glanced away. "Peter betrayed us. Peter ... sold us out, and told Voldemort where we were. So he came in, he ...." Lily closed her eyes. "James ... James told me to take Harry and go, but my wand was in the other room and I didn't have time. I ... tried to keep him out. Foolish, really, a waste of time, but ... I wasn't thinking. He'd just ... killed James. So I ... I stood between him and Harry. He told me to step aside. To ... stand aside. I couldn't, of course. Couldn't let him have my baby. Which ... saved him. The killing curse rebounded and would have - should have - killed Voldemort. It gave the wizarding world a reprieve though. Fourteen years until he came back again."

Which wasn't where she needed to go with this. "You ... after you'd heard. You tracked down Peter. You knew it had to have been him, and ... he. He killed a dozen people but set it up to look like you'd done it. You were taken to Azkaban without a trial, and you were there for ... for years, love. Until you got out in Harry's third year, and found him. Told him everything."

Lily exhaled a shuddering sigh. "Peter was killed in the war. The second war, in '98 along with ... with so many others." She studied him. "Are you ... I know this is a lot. Too much, likely, but ..." Lily shook her head and reached out a hand for him in case he needed someone to hold onto.

There was no way to react to that. First there was the icy knife that twisted every time he thought about his best mate falling, and then there was the compounding fear of it being Voldemort who'd held the wand. There was a deep sense of despair that he was too far in the future to do anything about not standing at his mate's side, ready to help defend his family.

And Peter?

Sirius was already shaking his head before Lily even finished. He couldn't believe that one of his mate's would do something like that. Little fat, useless Peter. There was no way he would be brave enough to even go to sign up to fight with Voldemort.

When Lily reached for him, Sirius waved her away and shot to his feet.

He couldn't sit still. Not knowing all of this now.

"Peter? But then he's been offed, too?" Sirius turned a strickened expression on Lily before beginning to pace the room.

Movement helped. It didn't completely allay the tremendous urge to rush out of the house looking for some sort of revenge, but it helped.

"Azkaban...years..." Sirius laughed bark-like. "Prophecies and wars and one of my mates turning traitor. How could that be too much? Isn't that what every bloke imagines his life to turn out like at sixteen?"

Sirius shook his head with another strained laugh. He had thought the worst of his life was over when he'd tossed all of things out his window over the summer, loaded up his motorbike, and headed out to the Potters'.

Lily looked slightly pained as he paced and ... well, ranted. But what else would she have expected? It was a load of information - bad news under worse news and it must seem like nothing positive had happened. But really ... nothing positive had happened.

His best mate had died, he'd been chucked into prison. He'd gotten out only to be a prisoner in his own house ... and then he'd died one of the first times he'd gotten out.

"He'll come back," Lily said softly. "Love, he has to. With both of us here, now, he'll have to come back. He wouldn't miss an adventure like this." She tried to smile, to be reassuring, but with each day that passed without James popping up in the front room, she was beginning to doubt that he would ... and she was slowly working at preparing herself to move on, when she was ready.

If James never came back, she wasn't going to let the thin strain of hope keep her from living a life. It wouldn't be the same life, and she missed all of her friends, her husband, but it would be a life. Her life.

He felt fairly gutted just hearing Lily's insistence.

Sirius didn't much care for all this bollocks about the dead coming back. He didn't have the experience of dying, so he didn't consider himself proof of anything. The dead didn't come back. Once something was lost, there was no getting it back.

And holding on to such a flimsy strand of hope would be enough to drive a bloke mad.

Sirius stopped pacing at the doorway to the next room with his back to Lily and leaned against the frame, finally sagging under the whole lot of news. He couldn't process it any more.

"D'you think we could continue this tomorrow?" Sirius said hollowly, the energy draining out of him. "It's been a bloody long day..."

Lily felt her heart go out to him, and she nodded. She had family at least - strangers though they were. What did Sirius have? Her, a her he hadn't been friends with. A her he didn't know.

"Of course. Get some rest and ... maybe things will look better in the morning." She doubted that though - things, even now - didn't look much better to her and she'd had several mornings to deal with it.

She wanted to offer him more words of comfort, but she honestly didn't know how. Not to a him at that age. It was enough to make her wish she'd come back younger, their age ... but then they wouldn't be friends at all.

"Right," Sirius agreed, not even bothering to pretend like he believed her. Things were looking a fair bit bleak from his perspective. Enough that he wanted to go to sleep and wake up in his four-poster.

I would be nice if that happened, but even his worst nightmares hadn't dragged along for this long. So unless this was some bloody bad confuddling spell, Sirius couldn't see a way out of accepting it as reality.

"Which room was it?" he continued, not turning 'round.

"The ... up the stairs, the one at the end of the hall on the right," she said. She'd nearly said 'my old potions room' but ... that wouldn't have helped Sirius at all.

He'd never been here when it was hers, because when he was sixteen, so was she ... and her marriage to James and moving into the house was an unheard of prospect.

She wanted to help him more, but she knew this was one of those things that would be settled with time ... and nothing else. "Goodnight, love," she said instead, her eyes lingering on his back.

"See you, E-- Lily," Sirius murmured, heading off.

He should have said thanks, but he couldn't bring himself to feel thankful just yet for all the bad news. It wasn't Lily's fault, and he would sort out his feelings tomorrow enough to quit being quite the git in the morning.

Maybe. He would see what the morning brought.
