RP: The Veil Revisited
Characters: Sirius Black, open
Time/Date: Late afternoon, August 25, 2023
Location: Department of Mysteries, The veil room
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Sirius wakes up with no idea when he stopped being awake.
Status: Complete

Sirius was face down on the coldest floor he had ever had the misfortune of meeting. The last he could recall, he'd been in one of those wonderful knock-down-drag-out fights he so liked to have with Slytherins who were pompous and stupid enough to think that fame and fortune was just beyond the walls of Hogwarts in the muggle-killing business.

He may have assumed some of that and just provoked the shadier, dark-arts-obsessed Slytherins into a duel.

Nevertheless!

Sirius was always in the right. And always ready for some more.

"Cheap shot," he scoffed into the dirt of the floor. Grimacing, Sirius started to push himself up, careful to not drop his wand.

Merlin. It felt like he'd been hit square in the chest. He hadn't even seen the spell coming.

Sirius managed to get to his knees before he pushed his shoulder-length hair back out of his eyes and got a good look around at... nothing. Nothing about the room was remotely familiar to where he thought he should have been. Beside him was an archway with a ghostly curtain that kept wafting toward him. He scooted quickly to the side, out of its presumed reach.

Something about a curtain that moved in a nonexistent breeze didn't sit right with him.

Climbing the rest of the way to his feet, Sirius tightened his grip on his wand and muttered a quick, "Lumos."

This didn't look like any of the dungeons Sirius had ever explored. Pity he didn't have the Map.

Nathaniel was feeling more than a little overworked. Not that he didn't normally have workaholic tendencies but that was by choice. This time it was not his choice and he wasn't even working in his area. He still felt disgruntled about being dragged out of the Hall of Prophecy and thrown into the taskforce that had been put together to investigate these people who'd returned from the dead. Not that the anomaly wasn't interesting, it was very interesting but it would have been nice to be asked at the very least, not just thrown into it willy-nilly.

Nathaniel was self-aware enough to know he was being a bit ridiculous and he blamed tiredness. Even a Ravenclaw like himself was entitled to be a bit silly when he was tired.

It hadn't taken long for the taskforce to figure out that these returned people were coming back where they had died and it had taken even less time for the older Unspeakables to remember one certain death that they needed to be aware of. Thus a roster had been set up to check the Veil Room periodically to see if Sirius Black had returned.

Nathaniel pushed the door of the Veil Room open, his mind on the conundrum of the returned. They'd had one influx and then nothing so he wasn't actually expecting anything... so he was a little startled to see a man in the room. He gave a wave of his hand that lit the few lamps on the walls and blinked. The man wasn't dressed like an Unspeakable so there was logically only one person he could be.

"Sirius Black?"

"Yes?" Sirius drawled out the word as he decided whether or not he knew the wizard.

All mental sign posts were pointing to a big, bloody no. Sirius was fairly certain he had met everyone in the castle, and he hadn't heard any news about any visitors from the gossip mill that was made up of younger year girls and boys alike.

Which left Sirius very wary about why this man in this strange place was apparently waiting for him.

"Who wants to know, exactly?" Sirius lifted his wand slightly despite the extra lights, not willing to lower his defenses.

Even at Hogwarts it was getting apparent that a wizard needed to be on his toes lest things turn ugly.

Which brought to mind the question...

"Do you have any sort of clearance to be here?"

When in doubt, Sirius would always opt to pretend like he had every right in the world to be someplace and it was instead everyone else who needed to prove themselves.

Nathaniel was amused by Black's reaction though the only sign of it was the tiniest of smirks on his face. He was curious as to why Black seemed rather younger than he'd been lead to believe he should be. That was an interesting little quirk and he wondered how that would change the prevailing theories amongst the taskforce. There'd been some interesting ones put forward given only Dumbledore had come back younger and even that wasn't young.

"My name is Nathaniel Goyle and I am an Unspeakable," he said calmly. He hadn't bothered drawing his wand despite the other man's wariness though it was close at hand. "And I would certainly say that I have clearance to be here given that I work here."

He took a couple of steps forward and cocked his head curiously. "This is the Veil Room in the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic.

Sirius lowered his wand a little, but still kept it ready at hand. He'd heard of the Goyle surname and he wasn't clamoring to be asked over to their place for tea. Just because this bloke was related didn't mean he was a terrible person, but it earned him a lovely spot on Sirius' list of Suspect Personages.

Near the bottom middle. Subject to change.

"I take it you named it that way because of the curtain over there?" Sirius jerked his free thumb back toward the veil, lifting both eyebrows at the same time. "I'd have put in a window before curtains, but that's just me."

Sirius glanced up toward the ceiling, then back at Nathaniel. "So am I here for a tour? I feel like I should be demanding my refund."

"It was," Nathaniel replied, still more amused than anything else. He tried to remember what he might know about his family but his father had never really cared to tell him much about the family history. He'd said it wasn't good. He wouldn't allow Grandpa to tell him much. It all seemed pretty silly to Nate anyway. What did blood status really mean? Blood was red, assigning any other value to it was illogical. "There seemed little point in creating a complicated name."

He raised an eyebrow and hesitated, wondering if he ought to summon one of his superiors to handle this. Perhaps even someone whom Black might know. He decided to press on with the basics. The elaborate questions and answers could wait.

Not that he expected Black to believe him... at least not at first.

"I am afraid what I have to tell you is going to come as something of a shock." Nate marshalled his thoughts then started with the very basic of basics. "I don't know what year you think it is but the current year is 2023. You are here because this is where you died in 1996, knocked through the Veil by a spell cast by your cousin Bellatrix Lestrange."

He paused for a moment, running through his knowledge of Sirius Black to find something that might convince Black then he smiled slightly. Best to pick something that had been a secret. "If you require some evidence that I am not mad or lying... you are an animagus as are your friends James Potter and Peter Pettigrew. You take the form of a black dog, James Potter a stag and Pettigrew a rat. Your friend Remus Lupin is a werewolf."

Sirius blinked.

It seemed the logical thing to do. Really, what else was a bloke to do? Someone tells you something completely batty and you blink, make sure you heard it right, then offer one of those slow, 'oh, I see what you did there!' smiles.

Cue the smile.

This, Sirius decided, was a brilliant joke. Completely laughable and not even close to true, but brilliant. This bloke was playing his part perfectly, too. Sirius had to give him kudos for that.

"As sure as I am that Bellatrix wouldn't jump at the chance of being the one to off me, I've got to call you on this, mate." Sirius gestured to himself to be certain his point was gotten across in great, flashing letters. "I'm a student at Hogwarts. Stunningly handsome with plans to graduate with the class of '78. You need to refigure your numbers there a touch."

Now backing up the part about James. Sirius was going to maul Peter for giving away their secret (because James and Remus certainly wouldn't crack! ...at least James wouldn't for sure).

"Is James here," Sirius asked warily.

Maybe it was all part of his master prank?

Nathaniel gave into his urge to sigh. How he hated dealing with the less than logical. After all, what possible purpose would he have in lying? He didn't know Sirius Black nor did he particularly care about him. He'd admit that Black was rather... pretty but his preference lay in intelligence and from everything he'd read about the man, Black didn't seem to be overly bright. Not surprising. The Black were fairly inbred and that sort of thing encouraged lack of intelligence and insanity.

"Yes, Mr Black, I know who and what you are. I've read your file," he said dryly. "That does not however change the fact that everything I have told you is the truth."

He raised an eyebrow then decided that being plain-spoken might be better than beating around the bush. "No. James Potter died in 1981, killed by Voldemort, and he has yet to be numbered among those who have returned. His wife has returned however and she is staying with their son." he paused for a moment then continued. "Remus Lupin died in 1998 in the battle at Hogwarts alongside his wife and Peter Pettigrew also died 1998 but neither of those two gentlemen have returned either."

"I want to see Evans, then," Sirius decided, dropping his quips and more light-hearted tendencies.

He refused to believe his best mates were dead years in the future. Or that he was dead... undead. How would he classify that? He didn't feel dead.

Whatever the circumstances, Sirius was going to push that from his mind and focus more on being angry at whatever was going on. It had always helped before. Things didn't go well, you became demanding, cold, snarky. Whatever it took to get through things.

Sirius folded his arms across his chest, staring at Nathaniel as he waited for his next move.

Nathaniel refrained from rolling his eyes only by sheer dint of long practice. He'd heard that tone of voice before from his grandmother. Dad called it the 'pureblood voice'. Not that Dad didn't also pull it out on occasion, usually when Nate had done something tricky and sneaky. Well, the Hat did think about putting him in Slytherin though it eventually decided that Ravenclaw was a far better choice. Dad should have expected tricky and sneaky from his own son.

"And I'm sure Mrs Potter will wish to see you as well," he said in the same soothing voice he'd used so many times with his Grandma. "But there are things that will need to be done first."

He gestured towards the door. "Will you please come with me, Mr Black? We have actually been half-expecting your return so we do have all the paperwork ready. It shouldn't take too long. We'll also contact Auror Potter for you." He paused then decided he'd best clarify that statement. "Harry Potter. James and Lily Potter's son. I understand you were his godfather. I'm sure he'll be very pleased to see you again."

Sirius halfway considered being stubborn and refusing to fill out anything until he felt better balanced about the whole thing, but he couldn't really see the advantage to that aside from making Nathaniel's life more difficult.

At this point he felt spiteful toward everyone. With every second that he thought about things, that spite was growing.

"Right, let's get on with this."
