RP: The Last Week
Characters: Ginny, Harry
Time/Date: Evening, August 24, 2023
Location: Potter home, Godric's Hollow
Warnings/Rating: None?
Summary: Ginny and Harry spend an evening in together
Status: Complete

Ginny glanced toward the stairs and rolled her eyes. How Harry knew their daughter that well, she couldn't even begin to guess. Still, she knew better than to talk about the upcoming events where huge ears could hear.

Settling onto the couch with a glass of wine, she reached out an arm for her husband. "One more week," she murmured. "Before you lose me to the school and you have a quiet house again." She paused. "Mostly quiet, anyway." Her eyes shifted to the closed door of the guest room. Ever since Lily had come back from the school, she'd holed herself up with the books.

Ginny supposed she understood. If she was forty odd years behind the times, she'd want to catch up, too. If she'd lost her husband on top of it ... she could understand the need for solitude, too. "How's your mum doing?" she inquired as she shifted her attention to Harry.

Harry settled onto the couch next to his wife, draping an arm around her shoulders as he leaned comfortably back against the cushions. Mostly amused at their daughter, he sighed as he relaxed.

"You'll probably be seeing more of me at the school this year though, between one thing or another," he said vaguely, though he wouldn't have been surprised if Lily had found other things to distract her by now. Truthfully, he was nervous about the tournament and even more concerned now that people had come back from the dead.

As far as he knew, there hadn't been any other cases, but he still had the Aurors doing extra patrols and had some doing rounds at Hogwarts as well. Even with a full staff, he felt stretched thin.

"She seems to be doing well, all things considered. I wish ... I don't know. I can't even really imagine how difficult this must be for her." He'd tried a few times to put himself in her shoes, to imagine how it would feel to have it suddenly be forty years into his future, to miss his children growing up, for Ginny to be dead. It was just so outside the realm of normal that he didn't think he really had any idea.

Between one thing or another, indeed. Ginny shifted to settle herself against Harry, sighing softly. "There's a very selfish part of me that hopes it isn't over. That Fred can come back, too. But just the same, I know it leaves the door open for people like Bellatrix as well."

She repressed a shudder at that. If she didn't think it would be bad press, she would have wanted to keep her kids out of school until they knew for sure it was over.

People died everywhere, after all, and she could only imagine - if this was ongoing - how many were slipping through the cracks.

"Do you know if there's any word yet on when or if they're submitting anything to the press? Last I checked with Hermione, they were still in debates about it."

She sipped her wine and glanced toward the stairs, but the kids seemed to be absent for now. At least, she didn't see the shadow of their stealthy lion up there.

"I know," he agreed quietly. He'd thought about Fred, and his father of course. Sirius, Remus ... but for every person he would love to see back, there were plenty who shouldn't ever see the world of the living again. Plus, there was the whole having to adjust to life passing you by.

For better or worse, though, whether it continued or not wasn't in his hands.

"No word, as far as I know. Honestly? I don't think anyone knows how to say it. It's unbelievable, really, unless you see it for yourself," he shrugged one shoulder, letting his eyes briefly close.

"I wish we knew what had caused it," he mused, not for the first time and probably not for the last. What the hell could cause this? Shaking his head lightly, he let his fingertips twirl gently in Ginny's hair.

"They've got to say something, sooner or later," she pointed out. "Your mom, Dumbledore's sister, those are easy enough to cover up. But Professors Dumbledore and Snape? And suppose it isn't over? Suppose it branches out and someone's grandmother comes wandering out of their guestroom where she died ten, twenty, sixty years ago."

She supposed if it was over, if this had been a one-shot deal, it wouldn't matter in the end. "Bet the Unspeakables are tearing their hair out over this," she mused aloud.

While she wondered if they'd ever figure it out, she had her doubts. It was impossible, despite the solid proof they had. Whatever had caused it was most likely beyond their comprehension.

"Do you think ..." Ginny hesitated. "No, nevermind. I was going to say maybe it was some second-chance thing, but if it was Fenrir who attacked Steven ... Guess that shoots down that theory. Unless whatever's responsible for this thinks he'll be a good dog this go-round."

"Sooner than later, I hope," he agreed, but he still didn't have any idea and he was glad that responsibility hadn't fallen on his shoulders. He imagined they would catch some press when it came out that his mother had come back, but they'd handle it. "Can you imagine if someone came back in the middle of a classroom?"

A grin tugged at his lips, as inappropriate as it might have been, "Or if Binns comes back to life and doesn't even notice?" Shaking his head, he ran a hand across his mouth.

"Yeah, I think Fenrir attacking Professor Capper already disproves that." He didn't really believe it was anything like that, anyway. Sure, they hadn't thought bringing people back from the dead was possible, but surely the world was now full of spells that wizards from hundreds of years ago didn't think possible.

Ginny frowned. "Suppose it's not possible to be staffing Aurors in every classroom, is it? Will they be patrolling while school's in session?" She exhaled. "And for the love of Merlin, you will talk to your daughter, won't you? I cannot even imagine the trouble she'll get in now that there's the chance of dead people returning."

Yes, his daughter. Lily Luna could not possibly be hers - she knew where the lines were and wasn't constantly crossing them. Ginny was of the mind that "lines" simply didn't exist to her daughter.

Ginny did grin a little at the idea of Binns coming back. "I imagine he'd notice that," she protested, playfully pushing at Harry's thigh. But maybe not. If he hadn't noticed that he'd died ...

Closing her eyes and tipping her head back to rest it on Harry's shoulder, she rubbed his thigh lightly. "I'm scared," she admitted quietly. "More for them than for us. A lot of sick, twisted, dangerous people died there. In the halls. In the Great Hall. If they come back at the point they died, they'll still be ... in the heat of battle, some of them. I'm afraid someone's going to get caught in the crossfire, no matter how many precautions, how many Aurors or hitwizards are there. They're not like us, Harry. They weren't raised with a threat dangling over their heads. They didn't have Dumbledore's Army to get them ready."

She just hoped to every god out there that her children weren't caught in a Death Eater's return.

"I wish," he murmured before confirming that there would be patrols. He wanted Aurors all over Hogwarts, but the professors would be there also and it just wasn't possible to cover every inch of the school. They'd have to make do and hope for the best.

"I'll talk to her, but you know she has an awful lot of Weasley in her too. We were just asking for trouble, I think, mixing our genes," he murmured with a little smile, though it faded quickly. He'd wanted his kids not to need anything like Dumbledore's Army. He wanted them to have boring lives, where their biggest problem was finding a job or having their hearts broken.

He squeezed his wife's shoulder, tilting his head to kiss her hair. He shared many of her fears, and he thought it was interesting sometimes how being a parent was scarier than being an Auror. "Well, to be fair, we had to do a lot ourselves as kids. We didn't really have the Ministry or the Aurors behind us."

"Mm, dunno what we were thinking, having kids. Especially after Jamie. But then Al was such a good baby, and I did want a girl." And she'd gotten a girl - and a bit more than she'd bargained for. "At least she wasn't twins," Ginny murmured, thoughts flicking again to Fred.

She should go see George. He probably had the same sorts of thoughts she did, and she wanted to see how he was doing, anyway.

"I know that," she said softly. "I was there. They're not really going to have anything behind them, either ..." She wondered if Lily would take it upon herself to start up a defense group. Ginny realized her feelings on that matter were rather muddled.

She wanted her children to be ready, but she didn't want there to be anything for them to be ready for. However, if it wasn't a one-day fluke, then the odds were good that someone would at least pop up at the school, and the odds were just as favorable for that person being a Death Eater as an Order member or fallen student.

"No, I know," he murmured. He hadn't at all meant to imply she hadn't known what it had been like, but he didn't think the situations were the same. They would have Aurors in the castle, Hits on call. They wouldn't have to fight against their own professors. It wasn't a situation he wanted his children in, but it wasn't war either. Not yet.

He blew out a sigh. "It had to be this year, also." He was careful not to mention the Twiwizard Tournament, though if he thought it would have benefited the kids to know, he would have dropped the name.

There would be more adults in the castle because of it, but also more chaos. More chances for an unrecognizable Death Eater to slip through the cracks.

Ginny glanced to the stairs before leaning in closer and lowering her voice further. "It's too late to call it off now, isn't it?"

She was nearly positive that was the case; it wouldn't make things any better, would it? Telling Beauxbatons and Durmstrang they couldn't come play because of a pesky returning dead problem. Things were already in motion and they couldn't call it off now.

"At least I'll have more time to prowl around the castle," she decided in a near whisper.
Shaking her head against her husband's chest, she sighed again. "Well, Mr Potter. What do you say we forget this doom and gloom and go to bed?"

"Too late," he agreed, wrapping both of his arms around her for a brief hug while she leaned against him. He thought if they really had to, it could be called off, but he wasn't sure it would do any good.

"Bed sounds like an excellent plan, Mrs. Potter. I'll talk to our darling daughter tomorrow." He hoped he'd be able to get through to their daughter, but she was a smart girl. He just hoped her smarts would outweigh her curiosity, though he was afraid that was a fool's hope.

"Going to carry me upstairs, then?" He suggested, sucking in his cheeks as he ineffectively tried to hide a smile, green eyes expectantly watching her. "I'm getting old, you know."

"Carry you upstairs? And then you woke up, love," she teased as she drew away from him slowly to stand.

Slipping out her wand, she flicked it a few times to lock up the house, put up the ward by the door, and turn off all but the night-lights.

"Besides that, you're not old. Not by a longshot." Tucking her wand away, she offered him her hand with a light smile so they could start up to bed and prepare for the remainder of the last week of vacation.
