RP: Near Death Experience
Characters: LilyLu, Jamie, Harry
Time/Date: Evening, October 29, 2023
Location: Godric's Hollow
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: LilyLu goes home to rest
Status: Complete

Most of the morning had been a blur, or some sort of distant, twisted nightmare. She'd been chatting with her grandmother, and then the world had been exploding, and then there'd been pain, and her grandmother's ... boyfriend had been pulling metal out of her middle and feeding her potions. There'd been a witch she hadn't recognized, and her mother, and then she was pretty sure she'd passed out or fallen asleep or something ...

... but the next thing she lucidly recalled was being snuggled in her bed in her room. Her stomach hurt like she'd been punched with something sharp, and she hiked up her shirt to peer curiously down at it. She couldn't even really see anything, but she thought there did seem to be something different about her skin in the sore area. Like it was newer. Which made sense if she'd really been healed like that.

Glancing to her bedside table, she saw a few notes and small packages, and she groaned because she didn't have her journal so she couldn't even write to anyone at school. But maybe Jamie still had his and she could borrow it to at least update people on her situation. Condition. Whichever.

Lily closed her eyes and snapped them back open just as quick. When she closed her eyes, she saw ... things. Blood and her grandmother with a piece of a building or pipe or something lodged in her leg, bloody coats and bloody water, and she could remember the pain when she'd had the metal yanked out of her.

It occurred to her vaguely, abstractly, that she'd almost died. That she could have died. That if her grandmother hadn't taken her to Snape, that if he hadn't known what he was doing and done it all so quickly, she could be dead. Lily reached out for her stuffed Hippogriff, the one she'd had since she was three, and she held it against her chest as she closed her eyes.

Unsure who was home, she licked her lips. "Daddy? Jamie?" She supposed her mum was home too, and if no one responded to her first call, she'd try for her mother.

James quickly made his way into Lily's room when he heard her voice and at least some of the fear he felt eased out of him, knowing that she was awake.

"Hey. I'm here," he replied as he made his way to her bedside. He tried not to look too worried as he gazed down at her, but he'd never been very good at holding things back. "Mum and Dad are too, but Dad's on a firecall for work or something. He should be done soon."

He thought he might be rambling, but it was easier to report things like that than sort through all the things he wanted to say. Part of him wanted to blame this all on Tom somehow even if it was much more likely to be Bellatrix.

"You won't break if I try to hold your hand, will you?" He asked, a little nervously, though he smiled, knowing it was a stupid question. He thought it was much more likely to hurt her if he ... sat on her stomach or something unlikely like that, but this was a new experience for him and one he didn't really want to become accustomed to.

She nodded to her brother, and wondered absurdly if their dad was mad at her for getting hurt. Or getting hurt worse than her grandmother had. Which was stupid, she knew, but "rational" wasn't high on her to-be list just then.

"S'Al okay? I think he was out there too." But maybe he'd stayed in. She didn't know, not really.

"I won't break," she said as she untangled one hand from the covers, offering it to Jamie. Her stomach ached, but she supposed that was to be expected. "Think they'll kick me off the team?" she asked miserably. She didn't really think she'd be allowed to play until she'd been completely cleared by a healer, and since she'd almost died, that might be a while.

He managed not to laugh when she asked about quidditch. It wasn't funny, of course, but he was relieved she was okay enough to be concerned about it.

"Al's okay," he replied first, giving her hand a gentle squeeze when he took it, settling down to sit on the edge of her bed. "Dunno about the team. I hope not. If they do, I'll rally for you and start a petition."

At least she had next year to be on the team if they did kick her off, but even as quidditch crazy as James could be, he'd rather have her off the team and okay than ... dead. Okay, of course any rational person would want that, but he didn't feel at the top of his thinking game right now either.

"I almost died you know," she said. The statement was made in a curiously flat voice, but she was still exploring the idea of it, the concept of it. "There was a big ol' piece of metal, inside my middle," she continued, pushing down the covers with her free hand and hiking up her shirt a little to bare her side for her brother to see.

"I should probably write him an owl," she decided as she gazed down at the mostly smooth flesh. "Lily's leg got all cut up, too," she added, in case James hadn't heard. Or simply because she thought he deserved a play by play from someone who'd been there. "Did you know Mr Snape could heal? Probably would have died if he hadn't."

Death ... was still not a completely solid, real, concrete thing to her. Old people died. People like her didn't. Not really.

"They probably will kick me off," she decided. "Unless I can convince Miss Legard I really am okay."

"I know," he replied quietly. It made him uncomfortable, the way she kept saying it, and how true it was. She had almost died. He had morbidly tried to imagine what it would be like to go to her funeral, how different their lives would be if she was gone. He hadn't gotten very far in his scenario before being overcome with feelings he didn't want to examine any further.

Gazing down at her stomach which looked mostly normal, he shook his head lightly. "I didn't know he could heal. Think if you owl him, you should thank him for taking the big chunk of metal out of your middle. In those words," he tried to joke, but it felt like it fell flat.

He looked away and shrugged, "Mum and Dad were really scared," which was his way of saying he'd been really scared.

Lily grinned. "I might. It'd probably amuse him." Well, it'd probably amuse her grandmother, anyway.

Tugging her shirt back down, Lily nodded. "I know. Mum was crying when we were still at Mr Snape's house. It's not like I could've done anything to stop it though. Who knew there'd be bombs there?" She sighed. "Is everyone else all right?"

She almost asked if anyone had died, but ... if it was more than bombs, if it really was a full on attack, surely some people had died. She just wanted to hear Jamie say everyone they knew was okay, and if anyone had died for them to be people she didn't know.

Well, she had a point. He supposed no one could expect her to be psychic, but he also didn't think anyone was blaming her.

"Everyone is... all right. Haven't heard about anyone we know dying," he murmured softly. He knew there were some injuries, but he didn't know the extent so he decided to just stick to the people he knew were okay. "Hugo and Meg weren't near the blasts, so they're totally fine.

"Some Death Eaters got caught, I guess. So there's that," he grinned a little and shrugged lightly.

"Good," she said softly. Tipping her head away, she yawned before she sighed. Who knew being nearly killed was so exhausting? "Was Bellatrix caught?" She doubted that ... it'd be a bit much to hope for, and surely Jamie would've come right out with it if she'd been one of them.

Too bad though. It would've been nice for them all not to worry about her anymore.

"I should write Hugo and Meg, too." She supposed one of the papers by her bed probably was from Meg, and she wondered what kind of gossip she was missing at school. She couldn't count on Meg to keep up with all of it.

Then she wondered if Noah missed her at all, and doubted it. Still, her lips twisted into a slight, disappointed grimace. Maybe he didn't know yet, or maybe one of his friends was hurt and he was distracted, or any number of things.

Lily tipped her head back against her pillow, wondering if her dad was going to show up or if he was going to be on the fire all night. But that was important, right? Cleaning things up. "Think they're going to cancel the next trip?"

"No, we weren't that lucky," he admitted with a disappointed shrug. It would have been damn nice if they had, though. But better a few Death Eaters, even if they weren't Bellatrix, than none at all.

"Are you all right?" He asked when she made something of a face, concerned. He knew she'd be having pain, understandably, but it still worried him. He reminded himself that it was a good sign that they thought she'd be back in school by Monday.

"I wouldn't be surprised if they did cancel the next trip," he admitted, lifting a hand to rub his neck. "But maybe they'll just increase security. I mean, they wouldn't be dumb enough to hit the same place twice, would they?"

Well, she hadn't imagined that had been the case. Still, maybe they'd get her eventually. She was bound to slip up, right? She'd been in prison before, so ... surely she wasn't invincible.

"I'm fine," she said, brow furrowing at his sudden concern, and she glanced over to him. She smiled as she squeezed his hand. "As fine as I can be though. Hurts, and if I forget and move in a certain way, it really hurts." Muscle damage and internal damage, and who knew what else going on inside of her.

"I don't know. She's dumb enough to threaten Lily when Lily's living with Severus, so who knows? Maybe whoever's running things is that dumb."

She hoped not. She'd rather have Professors patrolling around or Aurors or anything than having the last trip canceled. That was the one everyone did their holiday shopping on. "Guess we'll see. Maybe they'll all be caught by then," she offered hopefully, even though she knew better.

"Maybe," he agreed, but he didn't really believe it. That was too easy, wasn't it? Although, some had been caught during this attack, so who knew. He did wonder about Death Eaters getting killed, though; would they just come right back again?

He squeezed her hand and smiled a little, turning towards the door when he heard footsteps.

Harry smiled, an interesting mix of emotions in his eyes, but mostly he was just relieved that she was awake. He crossed the room and leaned down to kiss his daughter's hair and then her forehead, closing his eyes.

"Don't be so optimistic, Jamie," Lily teased him before she glanced to the door. "Hi daddy," she greeted him before she freed her hand from Jamie's to wrap her arms around her father.

It pulled at her side, made her wince a little, but she didn't really care just then. She was just glad to see her father. "Lily's fine, in case you didn't hear. She had a big piece of shrapnel in her leg, but I didn't really see much of it."

She suddenly wondered if the pieces were still around somewhere, but that was both morbid and really disgusting, so she opted against asking about it.

Releasing her father from the embrace, she flopped back onto the bed, a little grin on her lips as she shifted the covers down and pulled her shirt up enough that her father could see. She almost (almost, but not really) wished it had left a scar so she'd have some solid evidence to show people, but it had healed clean. "It doesn't even look bad," she assured him.

He returned the hug, though he was mindful of her injuries. There were a few tender areas of his own to watch out for, but they barely registered on his radar at this point. He was sure now that he felt Lily was stable, and there was nothing more he needed to do for work, he would crash sooner than later and feel all the aches and pains from the day.

"I heard," he replied with a little smile and then lowered his eyes to look at her stomach. "It does look pretty good. Doesn't even look like it's going to scar at all. I thought maybe you'd end up with a lightning bolt on your stomach and we could match."

Being a father had introduced tons of new fears into his life, but he'd never before been so seriously confronted with the possible loss of one of his kids. Even scarier was the fact that it may not be the last time.

"I'll draw one on," she decided, and now she really did wish it had scarred. Well, she wished that now, anyway. She probably would be glad, years down the line, that it hadn't left a mark.

"Is mum all right?" she asked softly. She assumed her mother was probably resting, or sleeping off the stress or something. She didn't think her mum would've gone back to school for anything. "Jamie said you guys were scared."

She was glad her father had come in, because she was starting to feel worn out. Feeling like this - tired, drained - was new to her and she didn't like it. So she'd have to make an effort to not be where any bombs were going off. Settling back against the bed, she peered at him through her lashes as she half-closed her eyes. "I think Jamie should go get me a snack," she said as she glanced over to her brother.

Jamie could take a hint, even if some of the time he chose to pretend he couldn't. This time, he didn't mind. "Don't get too used to me fetching things for you," he warned her with a grin, patting her leg as he stood up to let himself out of the room.

Harry watched his son head out and then focused his attention back on Lily with a little nod. "Your mum's all right. We're all a bit shaken. Your uncle Ron took a bad hit to the shoulder, but he's going to be fine.

"You should probably get some more rest, too," he said gently as he smoothed a hand through her hair. It was pretty easy to see how tired she was.

Lily shook her head. "Do ... do you know who was behind it? Or who did it? Jamie said you didn't catch Bellatrix, but did you catch anyone ... big? Like Fenrir or anyone like that?"

Not that it really mattered; anyone they caught was better than everyone escaping. "D'you think I should send Mr Snape an owl?" Her eyes closed the rest of the way. "To ... you know. Thank him for saving me and everything."

She hesitated, and she was completely aware she was going to sound like she was four, but she really didn't care. "Stay with me. Until I fall asleep?" She opened her eyes and gazed up at her father. She knew he had to be tired, too, but she didn't think she'd hold out that much longer as far as staying awake went.

Harry shook his head regretfully, "So far we don't know much. We caught a few names that I recognized, but none of the really big players. Last I heard, they didn't have much information about who, exactly, was behind it, but maybe we'll know more tomorrow."

He pulled a chair closer to her bedside and settled into it. "I think it'd be nice if you sent Sn... Mr. Snape an owl," he agreed with a little grin. "I'll probably send him one too."

Reaching over to squeeze her hand, he nodded, "Of course. I'm not going anywhere."

"Be nice if you could get it all figured out," she murmured. "I'll send him one tomorrow," she decided. It was getting harder and harder to fight the pull of sleep.

Settling into her bed, shifting until she was comfortable, Lily exhaled softly. "Goodnight, daddy. I love you."

She realized, too, that if things had gone differently earlier ... she might not be here to say that to him, and she squeezed his hand before she sighed and relaxed and let sleep claim her.
