RP: Plans
Characters: Dorcas Meadowes, Benjy Fenwick
Time/Date: Backdated to Satruday afternoon, October 22, 2023
Location: The flat
Warnings/Rating: NA
Summary: Benjy's going to be an Unspeakable; Cas feels they should celebrate. Planning needs to ensue.
Status: Ongoing

The Wolfsbane had not come out properly. It had, instead, turned a funny color and had to be discarded. So much for that try.

It was unimportant, though, considering the owl Benjy had gotten earlier. It wasn't that Cas ever doubted him, but still, it was brilliant to hear he'd gotten in. It also deserved a celebration, which, for the moment was still possible. In the wake of the reappearance of Voldemort, and the turmoil she feared would soon follow, Cas wanted to make sure they got to enjoy the night out. Apparating to just outside the flat, she unlocked the door, and walked in.

Benjy was sprawled contently on the couch, gazing up at the ceiling and giving very serious contemplation to painting ... birds on the ceiling. Or clouds. He was trying to figure out how he could charm the paint to make the clouds move when the door opened.

"Hey, stranger," he teased her as he sat up. "Suppose I should've spent this time getting ready to go rather than staring up at the ceiling. Was thinking about putting clouds up there. Charming them to move so we can lay on the couch and find cloud shapes." He grinned to her before he ran his fingers through his hair.

"Hello you!" She said, dropping her bag by the door and walking over to the couch. "Congratulations," she added, pressing a kiss to his forehead. "Knew you'd get in." Straightening up, she tilted her head towards the ceiling. "I like that idea; bring the outdoors in and all. Get to cloud watch even at midnight." She grinned. "Question just becomes how d'you do it?"

"Thank you, thank you. I try," he teased with a grin.

"Still working out that part," he admitted. "Maybe there's special paints that can be charmed to change shapes or something. I mean, there are moving paintings, right? So there's got to be something. We could maybe even hire some starving artist who knew how to do that sort of thing and pay them to do our ceiling."

He smiled up at her. "How was work?"

"I managed to botch a potion beyond any and all recognition, but other than that, work was fine. No paperwork, no chaos, nothing to note, really," she finished. "As for the ceiling, well, d'you think there's anything useful about the Hogwarts ceiling somewhere? Obviously ours wouldn't be as detailed, but the basic charms have to be the same, or at least similar."

"Well, just keep practicing, right? You gotta figure you're not going to be ace at all of them right out of the box. Especially the ones they've changed or invented since we've been dead."

He wondered what sort of things he'd be doing as an Unspeakable, if they'd involve potions. He was sort of assuming not, since that had been among his lowest score on the tests. He wouldn't mind doing some experimental charms work, or even working with some of the more unstable, questionable magic. Maybe that's what training would cover though; he'd have a look at the departments and figure out where he fit best.

"Think the Hogwart's ceiling's painted though? Thought that was just charm work."

"This one's important, at least for the field, so I feel a little inept," she said sucking in her cheek. It didn't matter that it was a difficult potion, or that, really, her specialty was in the practical charms bit; she was a Healer with a specialty in lycanthropy. Botching it up didn't exactly make her feel brilliant. She wasn't complaining, really, because this was better than being dead, but, adjusting was hard. She didn't like being moderately clueless in her field; she'd gone from being good to barely average and it wasn't sitting well.

"I ... am not sure. I always assumed it was some combination of charms and paint. Wonder how we'd find out."

"You're not going to pick up everything overnight," he assured her softly, holding out his arm and curving his fingers to encourage her to sit with him. "You'll get it eventually because you are brilliant, and in the meantime, don't worry so much about it as long as someone else is there to keep up with it."

He grinned. "Suppose we could write to Dumbledore, or the Headmaster. Is it explained in the Hogwarts history book? Or is it just 'and the ceiling is special'?"

Cas sat, idly tracing patterns on the fabric of the sofa. "Thank you," she said, softly. "I realize I'm being an infant, but I'm used to knowing what I'm doing. I liked being competent. I liked not feeling like a four-year-old who everyone's got to handhold." She shook her head. "It's just frustrating sometimes."

"Hmmm..." Cas mused. "If I recall correctly, there was something about the ceilings, but it was in the vein of 'and the ceiling is special'; there was nothing to really go on. I say we write someone and inquire. There has to be a way to do it."

Benjy stroked her hair and pressed a kiss to her temple. "We're all used to that. To being good at what we do. To knowing our job and not having to learn it all over again. At least when I go in for training, I'm learning a completely new job so I won't worry too much about feeling like an idiot."

Leaning his head against hers, he rubbed her shoulder as he held her. "You're not being an infant. It's tough, and we're certainly all allowed to have our tantrum moments."

He nodded. "Think we'll start with charmed paint and go from there," he decided.

Cas nuzzled closer against Benjy, leaning into his warmth. She liked being there, being held. Frankly, she liked Benjy, but this was no time to be having a crush on her flatmate. Or, rather, acknowledging that crush. Get it together, she thought. "Thank you," she said. "One of these decades, I will learn that perfectionism is not healthy. I promise.

"Charmed paint sounds good. Can we buy it charmed or do we have to charm it?"

"It really isn't. It'd be exhausting to be perfect all the time," he teased her. He recalled in a slightly abstract way that they were supposed to be getting ready to go somewhere, but this seemed fine for now.

"Dunno, but that sounds like another shopping trip," Benjy pointed out with a grin. "We could ask around, maybe find some owl order catalogs and see what's in there as far as paint goes." Where would they even sell charmed paint?

"Shopping tips are fun," Cas said. "Shopping trips for charmed paint, wherever it's sold, should be pretty epic, too. Should be even more of an adventure if we have to charm it ourselves." Cas could picture that, actually. In her mind, ended with paint all over, even on the things they had intentionally avoided splattering; that was the worst case scenario though, and one that could be remedied.

"Maybe there's a charmed art supply store or something like it," he mused. The moving paintings had to be painted, right? So surely there was some process behind it.

If not, there was experimenting with charms.

"So, we're still going out tonight or are we celebrating by having a lot of take-away and scooting to the corner store to pick up cup cakes?" He grinned lightly.

"If not here, then somewhere. Someone, at some point, had to have invented charmed paint. If not, I guess it's up to us then." Cas grinned at the thought; they'd figure out how to make it work somehow. After all, they had figured out fish and abstract backgrounds.

"It's up to you," she said. "We're celebrating your grand entrance into Unspeakable-dom, and the exciting things that entails. I could go either way."

He was kind of feeling a comfortable sort of lazy, and a half-smile quirked his lips. "We should go out and get a telly so we have something to do on the nights we don't feel like going out or painting or reading."

Granted, there was the wireless, and they could listen to that. Make commentary on whatever talk show was on. Or listen to records. Something. "Is this place set up to get ... whatever the equivalent of cable is now? So we can get movie channels and the like."

"I ... believe so. It's included in the rent, at least. We do need a telly, if only to see what entertainment's become these days, find the newest thing, et cetera. See what's going on in places that aren't the UK. And with the movie channels, there's forty-three years of cinema to catch up on. We could have movie night!" She said. "Looks like we have two trips to make."

"Excellent. So are we telly shopping tonight so we can make some popcorn and crash on the couch and just watch some movies? And we can see about the paint tomorrow?" It seemed like a good plan to him; he probably had the energy to shop for electronics.

"That is how I want to celebrate," he decided. "Buying a telly."

"Alright; let's go. I've got Muggle money still, and while we're out, we should buy popcorn, because you can't watch a movie properly without it. Also, sweets. More of those, " she smiled. "Merlin, I hope they've made good movies. It'd be a shame to see they've all gone downhill."

"We really can't," he agreed. "Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll have a snack aisle wherever we get the telly," he said as he stood up from the couch. He stretched, arms above his head, back arching before he dropped his arms to his side.

"If they have all gone downhill, we can poke fun at them and compare them to the amazing movies made in our time."

"Popcorn, and sweets, and a telly," Cas said, "Think we can manage all that." She stood up, pulling down on her shirt. "If they're terrible, I say we write in to complain. Merlin know what they'll do about it, but still. It's the future; they should know by now how to make brilliant films!"

"Excellent plan," he agreed. He popped into his bedroom to change into Muggle attire, drawing on his trainers once he was set to go. Ensuring he had his wallet, he smiled to Cas.

"Who do we write to? The company that made the movie or the channel that shows the movie? Or both, just for good measure?"

"We write to both; one for the company, because it's their fault the monstrosity got made in the first place, and on for the channel that shows it, because really, if you're running telly programming you ought to have good taste," she said. "It'd be like a radio man playing nothing but Celestina Warbeck -- sure, he could do it. But it would be in really bad form."

Benjy laughed aloud. "Fair enough on that. A station like that'd get shut down fast enough. Or it should," he amended. Patting himself down to ensure he was all set to go, he arched his brows to Cas.

"So shall we?" He opened up the door and stepped out into the hall to wait for her. He reasoned they could pop over to the Alley behind the Leaky, cut through into Muggle London, and go from there.

"Let's go," she said, following him out. "There's a Muggle populace to avoid alerting, and sweets, and popcorn, and a telly to buy. It's going to be a busy evening!" Cas stopped. "We should also, at some point, consider where we're ordering dinner from. Or if we're getting it on the Muggle side."

"We can just hit dinner while we're out," he decided. "Stop in the Leaky and discuss our plan of attack?" he inquired, brows lifting. It made sense, if they were passing through it first, and he didn't want to have to worry about dinner after they had the telly since he'd have to get it all set up.

He triple-checked to make sure he had his wand in an easily accessible place before he started down the hall to find a quieter place to apparate from, so they didn't pop off in the middle of the hallway.

"Leaky's good; we can catch up on the gossip of passers-by. Double the entertainment!" She said, following him down the hall. She liked this plan; dinner, shopping, hopefully not unnerving the Muggle population too badly. It promised to be an excellent night.
