RP: A Request
Characters: Ari, Albus
Time/Date: Evening, October 19
Location: their quarters
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Ariana wants something
Status: Complete

While she wouldn't go so far as to say she was harassing the professors, she'd definitely been pestering Professor Chambers with a lot of questions. Perhaps then it wasn't so surprising he'd let her sit in on one of his third year classes.

She'd watched the other kids as they worked their magic, as they flicked and swished their wands. As things happened because of their controlled magic. She had magic, she just ... didn't have a wand. Or control.

Though she supposed it was high time she got a wand so she could learn control. Albus hadn't pushed her at all, and sometimes she did wonder if he thought her having a wand was a good idea.

There was no way to know 'til she asked though.

After drifting around to visit some of her other favorite professors, she got to watch a little bit of a lesson with LilyLuna and Professor Bell, though she didn't like how ... serious and tense it felt in that classroom.

So it was just as well that she found herself pointed back toward her own quarters.

Slipping inside, she wandered over to flop dramatically down onto the couch before lifting her head to see if Albus was around in the room. If not, she'd have to go track him down, and she never knew where he'd be hiding at any given moment.

Albus was having a truly delightful time catching up on the last eighty years. Well, mostly delightful. There had been the rather sobering matter of reading the history books regarding Tom's exploits and hours spent closeted away with Filius talking to him about all that had happened. It had been sobering and he had questions that had yet to be answered. He suspected the answers lay with two men he'd apparently been quite close to yet didn't know - Harry Potter and Severus Snape - and thus had been hesitant to approach until he knew more on his own.

However one intriguing matter had come from his reading already. The status of the Elder Wand. He'd read about his death and the roles played by Harry, Severus and Draco Malfoy. It wasn't explicitly explained in the book but he knew himself well enough to know that he must have been trying to manipulate matters so that he died undefeated. He'd seen the description, again somewhat glossed over, of his hand and he knew what that meant. A curse, likely a fatal one. Yet this Draco Malfoy had defeated him before his death. It was obvious to him that Harry must have subsequently defeated Malfoy as he'd definitely had control of the Elder Wand when he'd defeated Vodlemort.

Yet Albus' own recent experiments had confirmed that the wand he'd returned with was indeed the Elder Wand and that he maintained mastery over it. He could feel it. It was a pretty conundrum really and he'd been lost in thoughts of it when Ariana had returned. It wasn't until she flopped down on the couch so dramatically that he was wrenched out of his thoughts.

"Is something vexing you, my dear?" he asked from his desk in the corner of the room. This was his 'public' desk. the things on it were nothing that could harm or worry anyone. The castle had been kind enough to provide him with a private office for more serious matters. He smiled at his sister, still so delighted to have her back and seemingly in a far better state mentally than he remembered. If that was a gift from whatever was doing this, he would accept it with grateful thanks. He only wished Abe was here.

"I wouldn't say vexing," she said as she sat up to lean against the back of the couch, peering toward the desk and her brother. Her lips twisted slightly as she cycled through a variety of expressions as she attempted to discern which one she wanted to settle on.

"I think I want a wand," she finally said. There was an edge of shyness to the request, because she wasn't sure he'd think she was ready for it, for that sort of responsibility and it wasn't as though she was exactly stable. Better, yes, tons better, but a far cry from a sure thing.

"And ..." she plucked lightly at a loose thread on the back of the couch. "And I'd like to go out on the trip. The one to Hogsmeade." That, she anticipated, would be a 'no', but she wouldn't know if she didn't ask. But she'd mingled a little with the other students, and she'd made kind-of friends when she'd ventured past the lower common room, and crowds weren't quite so frightening now, but ... maybe she wasn't ready for that. Or maybe he didn't think she was.

In truth Albus wasn't entirely surprised by the request. He knew what she'd been doing of course. The teachers spoke to him about what her and he'd agreed with Randolph's suggestion that she be allowed to sit in on his Third Year class. He'd been pleased that she was showing an interest in the lessons and hoped that she might pick up a little more control by watching. It was hard to know if it would be helpful given that he had never been entirely sure precisely what was wrong and there were few books on the subject. He was also reluctant to subject her to a healer, even one as lovely as young Ashley Legard.

But he also felt that maybe a wand and the associated lessons could help her with that control. If she became used to channeling her magic through a wand then perhaps she could stop the magical fits before they began. Though admittedly becoming more comfortable around people would also help with that, which was why he'd made no protest to her wanderings through the castle. He had the portraits and house elves keeping a subtle eye on her for added safety.

It was that thought that prompted his reply. "I think we could arrange that," he said with a fond smile. "We could have a little outing to Diagon Alley one morning, just you and I." He paused and considered the matter for a moment. "Perhaps we could also get some of the First and Second Year Year textbooks so you could start learning the basics." He would prefer she approach this slowly and steadily rather than rushing into things. He felt rushing might frighten her and put her off, taking it slowly, even a little too slowly, would keep her focused and interested. In a sense she needed to learn at her own pace without being pressured.

He hesitated at the request to go into Hogsmeade. She was getting better with people but he wasn't sure about this idea. The children did tend to get far more boisterous than they were in the castle, not something he thought she would handle well. "I don't think Hogsmeade would be a very good idea," he said gently. "Things do tend to get somewhat... rambunctious when the students are allowed down there. Perhaps we shall see how things go in Diagon Alley and make a decision after that?"

She wasn't surprised by the response about the trip, though she was a touch disappointed. But perhaps they could go together, or he could let her go with a smaller group of older students on a special trip or something like that.

She'd even take going with a professor, simply to see the village. It would have been more fun with students, she thought, but ... there was time enough for that. Maybe in a few months once she'd gotten more used to the students, maybe made more friends, someone would actually ask her to go along.

Ariana almost thought to ask about the ball, but she figured she was too young, and definitely no one was going to ask her to that.

Blue eyes drifted with her thoughts for a moment before she drew her focus back to her brother. "All right," she agreed. She knew the books were a good idea, and she wondered if she should make some friends in those years to practice with. Maybe after the holidays she'd be at a point where practicing with other students could be a reality and not just a fancy.

"How does it work? Getting a wand?" She wanted to be as prepared as possible; the fewer surprises, the better. "Do I just find one that's pretty and decide on it? Or ..." Her face scrunched slightly as she thought. "Or is there something to what they say, about a wand picking you?"

Albus was pleased that she accepted his decision. He would use the trip to Diagon Alley as a test though even if she coped well with that, he doubted he'd let her go on her own. No, he'd set that aside for the moment and come back to it later.

When she touched on a subject that had been at the forefront of his own thoughts he set aside the papers he'd been reading and ambled over to sit next to her on the couch. "There is quite a bit of truth to that," he said amiably. "The wand chooses the wizard as Ollivander the wand maker used to say. That's not to say you couldn't pick up someone else's wand and use it but a wand that is just right for you will work far better. You can feel the difference."

He'd been able to feel the difference between his original wand and the Elder Wand though he wasn't sure how much of that was to do with wand mastery and how much it had to do with the Elder Wand itself.

"When we go in to see the wand maker, he will ask you a few questions then bring out wands for you to try," he explained. "You will know when you have the right wand."

Ari turned to sit properly on the couch when he joined her, and she leaned her head on his shoulder before she sighed softly. "What if my wand isn't out there?" she pressed as she found another loose thread on the couch cushion, and she tugged at it, letting it slip between pinched fingers, over and over. "What if none of them want me?"

It was a very genuine fear she had. She wasn't right, she knew that. She was a little bit broken. Maybe there weren't any wands that fit her. Maybe wands were only for whole witches and not unstable, broken ones.

She wasn't sure if it would count enough that she wanted to be a whole witch, to be stable, to be secure and strong in her magic like her brother was.

"What kind of questions does he ask?" she continued as she began to build a mental picture of the procedure.

Albus wrapped an arm around her shoulders and reflected momentarily on the strange and wonderful good fortune that had brought them both back and permitted him to begin to make amends for his appalling errors. He had been well aware that his avariciousness for the Resurrection Stone had faded into nothing which was something of a relief, truth be told. It meant his desire for it had been mired in good intentions and not in his own greed.

"There will be a wand for you," he said with a soft chuckle. "It may find you quickly or it may take awhile. I had to go through ever so many wands before my wand and I found each other."

He was referring to his original wand of course, the one he'd had since the age of eleven and not the wand he gained from Gellert. He had no idea where that wand was now and he felt he would either need to find it or obtain another. He couldn't use the Elder Wand regularly - that way lay danger and temptation. Or he could simply hone his already good skills at wandless magic.

He smiled. "I am sure the wandmaker will have something. They do tend to like a challenge."

He cocked his head slightly. "They ask which is your wand hand. That's the main question. They may ask other smaller questions about magic and such like. Nothing to be worried about though."

Ari held out her hands in front of her after snuggling against Albus' side. "How can you tell?" She asked as she studied her hands. "Is it just the one you write with? Or is it different? Is it the arm the magic goes down better?"

She flapped both of her hands before curling slender fingers into fists, as if gripping a wand before making some of the motions she'd seen in the classes today. "Can both of them be wand hands, or is it always one or the other?"

She believed what he said about there being a wand for her, and she hoped she did find it quickly; she wasn't sure she could endure the disappointment of too many mismatches.

Dropping her hands back down to her lap, she tilted her head to peer at her brother and await the answers.

Albus watched her hands as well. "It's usually the one you use the most. Your dominant hand as it's called. For example, though I can use both hands, I prefer my right so my right hand is my wand hand." he anticipated her next question. "It does feel a little different when I use my left hand. Not so much that it distracts me or makes the magic any lesser but certainly enough so that I notice and have to concentrate a little more than usual."

He took one of her hands in his though he noted she'd obviously been paying attention when she'd sat in on those classes. Perhaps it was indeed time to get her a wand. "Some wizards and witches can use both hands completely equally but that is very rare. It is quite normal to favour one hand or the other."

"As for why we favour one hand or the other... well, it has to do with our minds," he continued. "As you and I know, any witch or wizard can perform accidental magic. It is how we know we are witches and wizards when we are young. But accidental magic is unfocused and uncontrolled. learning to use a wand allows us to gain that focus and control much in the way a toddler will scrawl on paper..." His eyes suddenly twinkled with amusement. "... or on the wall with a crayon then eventually learn to focus and control their mind and hand to write properly. The principle is the same with magic."

Ariana was quite familiar with accidental magic. It was the sort she did when she did magic.

Nodding thoughtfully, she supposed her right hand was her wand hand. She did most things with that hand: wrote with it, drew with it, drank her tea with it.

She tried to recall if Abe was right or left handed with his wand, but was having trouble picturing it. "What hand did Abe use?" She dropped her far hand back to the couch cushion, seeking out the thread and tugging lightly at it. "Did he have trouble picking out his first wand?"

She wondered - but thought it best not to ask - if he'd ever be coming back. It was an inevitability in her mind - she and Albus were here, so Abe would be, too - but she wanted to know when. She missed him.

Albus smiled sadly when the topic came around to Abe. Most of their conversations did at some point and he felt a pang of pain that came from many sources. He too wished Abe would return, not because he wanted to wash his hands of Ariana, far from it. He wanted Abe back because he knew Ariana missed him and wanted him back. He wanted Abe back because he missed his brother and dearly wanted to try and make amends. If Abe would even let him.

"Abe used his right hand." For more than just his wandwork as well. Albus' hand drifted up almost unconsciously to touch his slightly wonky nose that Abe had broken so spectacularly at Ariana's funeral. He hadn't even attempted to defend himself. He'd deserved such anger.

"No, he didn't," he said with a a chuckle, remembering that day in Diagon Alley. "In fact he was rather smug about it since Ollivander had mentioned how long it had taken to find my wand. As I recall, it started a round of brotherly bickering between us as each of us insisted that we were superior, I because it took a long time, he because it didn't. I believe Ollivander found it enormously entertaining. He must have, as he tended to remind me of it each time I saw him in the years afterwards."

She wondered how many people used their left hands, and she decided she wanted to find out. She'd observe the ones who had their wands out and ask the ones that didn't - as long as she wasn't bothering them. She was very much against actually bothering people who were busy.

She'd found plenty of people who were more than happy to chat her up though, from first years to professors and everyone in between - though she did dodge Quoft as often as she could. He just seemed cranky, all the time.

"Is that who we're going to see? Ollivander?" But then, if he'd been old enough to give her brothers their wands, then surely he was long gone by now. Sometimes she had trouble associating between then and now, and found herself wondering why some things seemed displaced. But ... she was the one displaced. The world had moved on without her and simply picked her up at some point in the future. She didn't mind though; she had at least one of her brothers with her.

"No, I've been told he died some years ago," Albus replied. "He was hurt quite badly during the war and never truly recovered. A shame really. he was an odd old man..." He paused and gave her a mischievous look. "But that is one of the prerogatives of growing old. You're allowed to be quite odd."

He poked his tongue out at her briefly then continued, "I believe the man who sells the wands in Diagon Alley is named Varin Dmitrov. I have been told he makes excellent wands, even quite exotic ones as well, so I expect he will have one just for you."

It was odd to see the world he'd once know was either gone or changed in ways he sometimes wasn't expecting. But it had been nearly eighty years and only a fool expected things to never change. he did find the way people reacted to him to be... troubling. He knew there would be consequences to the display of magic he was forced to put on to defeat Gellert but he didn't like being treated like some sort of demi-god.

Ari wasn't completely certain what she thought about having a new wandmaker, and not the one her brothers had used. It added an unknown element to her mental preparations. What if he did things completely different from Ollivander? What if everything she was being told would play out into nothing because his procedure was different?

"Is he nice?" she inquired, her brow furrowing a little. "Did you hear if he was?" Her brother had clearly heard some things - surely whether or not he was nice was right up there among them.

Her nose wrinkled a little as she abandoned her thread tugging to rest her hands in her lap. "When can we go? Will you go meet with him first and make sure he's nice?"

"I'm sure he will be nice," Albus said soothingly. "Though he may be a little strange. Many wandmakers I have met have been strange. Possibly something to do with their job."

He took her hand in his again. "I can go and meet him first if you like but I shall be with you anyway." And he'd noticed that any number of people tended to suddenly behave quite decorously around him and while he would not do it for himself, he certainly wasn't averse to playing up on that where Ariana was concerned.

"Shall we go on Monday morning? Mondays do tend to be nice and quiet and that will give me time to go and see him over the weekend."

Ari grinned a little. "Well, what's normal in this day and age?" she pointed out. She likely wouldn't notice whether or not he was strange because she had little to compare it to. People were just different, and maybe the wandmaker would be a different sort of different.

"Monday sounds all right," she agreed quietly, nodding slowly. Quiet sounded good, and of course Albus would be there with her, and that was good.

A wand, and some books, and an introduction to magic. If she thought she had anyone to send letters to, she would have asked for an owl, but she thought one would be bored if it was just her pet. Maybe a nice rat though. "Can I get a rat, too? For a pet? Or do I have to officially be scheduled in school to have pets?"

Albus gave a delighted laugh. "How very true. When the dead are coming back to life, who can say what is normal and what is not." Of course, he'd always been a little odd in many different ways so he was quite used to it.

He gave her a curious look that was tinged with more than a little amusement. "I don't think anyone would mind if you had a pet rat. Certainly a rat is among the accepted pets one is allowed to have here." He paused for a moment then gave in to his curiosity. "May I ask why a rat in particular?"

He'd expected maybe a kitten or a puppy or even an owl. A rat was... unusual.

"Well, I haven't got anyone to send an owl to, so it'd probably be bored as my pet, and I don't want a toad." Her nose wrinkled some. "They give you warts. I don't care that Professor Longbottom says different."

So, all right, she strongly suspected toads didn't actually give out warts, but why risk it?

"Besides, I saw a picture of a rat in a book that was really pretty. It was grey and white and had blue eyes. I want one like that," she said. "Do they have those here, or are they only brown rats?" She hadn't really thought to step up to kitten or puppy, but then ... she hadn't been inside of a pet store yet.

"And you can always use the school's owls. That's what they're there for. Or..." He drew out the final letter of that word and smiled secretively at her. "Or you could use someone who appeared just a couple of weeks ago. Did I ever tell you that I used to have a phoenix as a companion? Not a pet, a phoenix could never be considered a pet, but Fawkes was a friend and a good companion."

He tugged lightly on a lock of her hair in a playful manner. "Well, my dear old Fawkes immolated himself after I died but who should appear in my bedroom a couple of weeks ago but another phoenix. I was quite surprised. I never knew one could have two phoenix friends in a lifetime but I suppose I have done things in an odd way. I was going to tell you but then the poor thing went through a burning day and Cassius is far more vain about such things than Fawkes ever was. He refuses to be seen by anyone but me until his feathers come back in."

"I've been calling him Cassius. He seems to like the name." The name had been accompanied by a silent request which a moment later was fulfilled and a scarlet and gold phoenix appeared in a flash of flame in the room and began to circle above them, singing the beautiful liquid song of the phoenix that always made him feel so much better. Cassius' markings were striking but also vastly different from those that Fawkes used to wear which always made Albus feel better about accepting his new friend.

"You didn't," she said, her eyes narrowing slightly as she wondered if he was teasing, but ... he didn't seem to be. "I saw one in a tapestry in the hall," she reported with a smile before she listened to his story.

She did jump a little when the phoenix appeared in his flash before she tipped her chin to study him as he flew around.

"Isn't there only one ever at a time?" she inquired. "Why would it be a different one than the first one, or are the stories wrong and there's really more than one?"

She lifted up a hand toward the phoenix, though she wasn't sure what she expected to happen; it wasn't as though he would land on her. Right? But maybe he was pettable and she could pet him.

"It is my thought that there are many phoenixes in the world but they simply choose not to be seen by humans," Albus said with a fond smile as he watched Cassius fly around the room. "You can't capture them or coerce them into staying with you. It is their choice to join a human and their choice alone and no one knows why they make the choices they do. Fawkes simply appeared to me one day, just as Cassius did. I do not question, I simply accept their companionship with delight and honour."

His smile broadened as Cassius flew down to perch on the arm of the couch and eyed Ariana curiously. "I don't know why they have chosen me. I am just a man, as flawed as the next, but Fawkes was a good friend to me and I am sure Cassius will be as well."

As he watched Cassius hopped down onto the couch and carefully picked his way over to insinuate himself into Ariana's lap. He chuckled and gently stroked the phoenix's head. "Fawkes used to do that when he wanted attention. Terribly vain creatures, phoenixes are." Cassius looked over at Albus with a warbling sound that was almost a chuckle then the phoenix looked at Ariana imploringly.

She thought that made sense. Why would they go about flaunting themselves if they didn't want to be seen? People were ... unpredictable and often cruel, so she imagined it made sense for them to hide.

Her brow furrowed a little. "Maybe you aren't so flawed as some of the others. Or they want to help you fix your flaws," she suggested as she watched the phoenix moving over toward her. She was a little wary, all too aware of his beak, of his talons, but she lifted her arms a little to make room for him in her lap.

She hesitantly ran her hand along his back gently, gazing at the feathers, the patterns of the markings on him. He felt lighter than she thought a bird that size should but ... he was a bird and had to be light to fly, didn't he? Wondering why she hadn't seen him yet, she supposed it didn't matter. Maybe it hadn't been time ... and it was simply time now.

"Maybe they do," Albus said softly as he watched Ariana and Cassius. He rather liked that idea. It gave him hope that maybe he could repair his flaws. After all, he couldn't be such a lost cause if a phoenix... two phoenixes... were willing to come and stay with him. Yes, definitely a comforting thought.

"I am sure he would be willing to carry any message you believed too urgent for the school owls," he continued in a more normal tone of voice. "And if there is trouble he can get you out."

He caressed the top of Cassius' head. "You will do that for me, my friend? Keep an eye on my sister and keep her out of trouble when I cannot?"

The phoenix warbled again, a definite sound of agreement, and Albus gave a sigh of relief. "Thank you."

"I still don't have anyone to send letters to," she insisted. All of her family was here, after all, because all of her family consisted of Albus. Though she supposed come summer, or over the holidays, she might have made friends she'd want to send letters to.

She wondered what sort of trouble he expected her to be getting into ... but if she happened to be in a hallway when a person who used to be dead popped out ... and they were a bad person ... that would be trouble.

But what did she know of the wide, wild world? And once she got her wand, the potential for accidents increased. She knew phoenixes were clearly special, but what could he do to keep her safe? Surely they must be capable of some things or else Albus wouldn't trust him with her safety.

Stroking the phoenix, she relaxed against the couch and tipped her head back against the back of the couch before half-closing her eyes.

Albus chuckled. "You could send letters to Harry and to Lily. I am sure they would like to know that you are happy and well." He was almost surprised that he hadn't had letters from them but perhaps they were simply giving them space.

He watched as she leaned back on the couch then eased his way off the couch. He still had a little more reading he'd like to do today, especially if he was going to spend some time in Diagon Alley. He always seemed to spend more time there than he expected. He went for one task and ended up chatting to many people. He enjoyed it but it was time consuming.

She supposed she could at that. Maybe she would. Maybe after she got her wand; that would be something to tell them about. She opened one eye completely as she felt Albus get off the couch, but she supposed she'd accomplished what she was after and he had work to do. Besides that, Cassius was contently warming her lap.

So maybe she'd just sit here, and stroke him, and think about what it would be like to have a wand.
