RP: Something to Tell You
Characters: Lily, Harry
Time/Date: Afternoon, October 15, 2023
Location: Godric's Hollow
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily wants to tell Harry in person
Status: Complete

Lily hadn't exactly gotten around to telling ... anyone, really, just yet. She'd thought to owl Cas a couple of times, but in the end decided this was more face-to-face news. She supposed both Relic and Mitch had caught on that she'd found someone; there'd been a couple of comments about her being more cheerful than usual around the store. She'd let them wonder, though she thought Relic had an idea of who, exactly, Lily's "someone" was.

She thought, too, she'd have to tell Faustus next time she bumped into him at school. He'd helped a little with her conundrum, after all; it only seemed fair he be kept updated on the outcome.

But of all the people to tell (and of course the most difficult one), was Harry. She was hoping (perhaps a bit morbidly) that since he had grown up without them, he wouldn't feel like she was 'replacing' James.

Granted, he had grown up with Severus as his professor - something Lily tried not to think too hard about - and she wasn't sure if he had animosity he hadn't yet expressed that would come out with this announcement.

Which, she supposed, was why she thought it best delivered in person.

Carrying a plate of biscuits she'd made that morning, Lily popped herself over to the gate of the Potter home, letting herself in. She knocked on the door in warning before opening it. "Anybody home?" she called cheerfully as she looked around. She was fairly certain Harry had the day off, but didn't know. He could've been called in, but if then ... Jamie might still be home.

Either way, she'd see who showed up. "I've got biscuits if there are any Potter blokes about," she called again, a smile on her lips as she started for the kitchen.

Harry smiled when he heard her voice. "In the kitchen!" He called as he finished putting a few dishes away. It sounded as if she was moving towards him anyway -- which made sense if she had biscuits.

"Just one Potter bloke today," he informed her once she made it to the kitchen. "Jamie's got practice. I just finished lunch, but if you're hungry, I could get something for you."

Pushing away from the counter, he kissed her cheek in greeting and then grinned as he stole a biscuit from the plate.

"That's a shame. Does he even live here anymore? I feel like I haven't seen him in ages," Lily 'complained' to her son. Granted, she hadn't seen her other grandson either, though LilyLu seemed to be around the potions room often enough with Lily was there.

She smiled softly as she pressed a kiss to his temple. "I actually come bearing more than biscuits. I've got a bit of news that I didn't think should be delivered to you over owl." She set the biscuits on the counter, almost absently casting a preservation charm over them so they didn't go stale too quickly.

"It shouldn't take long though ... we don't even have to sit down to tea."

"Feels as if he doesn't, sometimes," Harry admitted with a little smile. "But he's young. I hardly expect he wants to hang around at home with me all day."

Of course, he wasn't much younger than Lily, which still boggled his mind sometimes.

Curious about the news, he motioned for her to sit down at the kitchen table and took a seat himself. She seemed much too cheery for it to be anything bad so he wasn't too concerned as he broke his biscuit in half before taking a bite. "I'm all ears."

"True enough," she admitted. She herself was out and about a lot, making friends and selling books and things of that nature. Perhaps soon she'd be selling potion and potion ingredients, and she was sort of looking forward to that.

She moved over to the table, settling down into a seat and resting her hands on the top of it. "Well ... you know that Severus and I were friends in school, right?" She searched Harry's face for a moment, gazing into his familiar eyes. It still got her a little that they were all but identical to her own.

"Well, it ... it had potential to be a bit more than friendship if ... if things hadn't gone so very badly. And those feelings were stirred up again, so ... I told him, how I felt, and it turns out he feels the same way. So we're ..." Lily hesitated. "Together," she settled on. She wasn't sure there was really a term for what they were. Lovers, maybe. Boyfriend/girlfriend sounded so school-ageish, and they weren't married. They were more than friends. But 'together' worked for this.

Studying her son's face, she tried to gauge his reaction to see how he felt about things so far.

Oh. Harry felt ... strangely guilty as she gave him background and he had a very strong feeling that he knew exactly where this was going. Along with the guilt of knowing things that he shouldn't, he also felt relieved that now at least they wouldn't be hanging over him anymore.

Turning his hand over so he could take hers, he gave it a gentle squeeze and smiled at her, "As long as you're happy, I'm happy," he answered, though he did wonder if his father knew and how that had gone or was going to go over.

He couldn't imagine it going very well and he did feel bad for James. He wished James would have come back at his proper age, but it hadn't worked that way and they all had to deal. At least she was going to be with someone who Harry knew would never hurt her and after everything he'd lived through, he thought Snape deserved some happiness.

"Truthfully ... before Snape died, he gave me some of his memories. They explained a lot about what was going on behind the scenes in my life, but also ... some of his feelings for you. I doubt he gave them to me on purpose," he shook his head lightly as he confessed, "so I never felt like it was my place to tell you, but that's... I mean, in case you were expecting a little more surprise out of me?"

"I am," she said quietly. "Very happy." A sheepish little smile crept across her lips. "I haven't told your father yet, though I'm going to owl Remus about it later, see what he thinks about telling James. It isn't as though ... I don't know. I loved your father, of course, but ... after he grew up." Lily felt little prickles of guilt, and hoped Harry could understand what she really meant. James wasn't the same person now he'd been, and he might not grow up into the same person.

She loved Severus, was living with Severus, and while James (or memories of James) would always have a place in her heart, she had to live her life as it stood now.

She took Harry's hand, nodding slightly. She understood how it must have felt to be holding that sort of secret. "I suppose I was, but I was braced for the worst," she admitted. "Accusations of trying to replace your father, shock and horror at ... being with a man so much older than me. Any number of things." She smiled fondly to her son. "Glad you're taking this so well."

He thought he understood as well as he could, given that he wasn't the one the situation had happened to. But he did recall how James had acted at that age from other people's memories. He could remember how miserable he'd felt to see his father acting like a bully and he squeezed her hand once more.

A little chuckle escaped him when she mentioned how much older Snape was than her. "Well, age is tricky here to me. The idea that I'm older than Snape is actually much more horrifying to me, to be honest," he admitted wryly.

If this had to happen, he was glad he was old enough to be rational about it. Even in his twenties, while he respected everything Snape had done for him and for his mother, he wasn't sure how he would have dealt with this. But now ... well, he meant it. He just wanted her to be happy. He dreaded what James would think, but he was sure in the end, his father would adjust and find someone else.

She smiled softly. "I imagine it must be a bit disconcerting," she agreed. "Likely not as odd as it is for him to have all of his students older than him," she reflected.

She rubbed her thumb against Harry's hand before she tilted her head. "Do you still have the memories?" She couldn't imagine what he might have done with them, or if he'd left them to someone else, or stuck them in a vault or something. "I ... now that he's here and back, he might want them," she said.

Given how private Severus was, she couldn't imagine he was comfortable with the idea of someone else having any part of him - especially if they were memories of her, or his feelings for her.

"I do still have them," he admitted and the thought of giving them back had crossed his mind, but he imagined it to be a very awkward encounter and he hadn't been in a hurry to do it. Truthfully, he'd been content to pretend he knew absolutely nothing of the whole situation, though he wouldn't have been surprised by a cranky owl demanding them back.

"Would you deliver them for me?" He asked, still not keen on the idea of passing them back himself. Snape probably needed as little reminders as possible that Harry had had them anyway.

She chuckled softly. "You know, if I were a more sadistic mother, I might strongly encourage you to drop them off yourself," she teased him. But she couldn't imagine either of them would really want to see one another. Especially not over the matter of Sev's memories.

"No, I'll take them to him," she assured Harry.

Now that the news-news was out of the way, she smiled. "I got a kneazle," she shared. "You know they make you get licenses to own one? He's adorable though. Black with grey flecks in his fur, and huge blue eyes. He's already done a job of making himself king of the house."

"Well, I appreciate that you've reigned in your sadistic side," he teased back with a grin. He did have to wonder how different Severus was with her. He couldn't really imagine Snape being anything other than the potions professor he remembered, but just from seeing the way Lily lit up when she spoke about their relationship, he knew this was good for her.

"I did know about the licenses," he agreed with amusement. "What does Snape think of having a pet?" He asked curiously, again unable to picture that side of the other man.

"Oh, they get along brilliantly," she assured him. "Jeremy had a moment at first, but ... he must know that deep, deep down, Severus is a good man. Sev pretends to disdain the kitten, but ... I know better," Lily said, a silly little smile on her lips as she thought about it. Thought about him.

Catching herself, she flushed a little and ducked her head. She must be coming off as a lovestruck teenager, but she rather felt like one lately.

Harry, at least, seemed to be all right with it and that was a relief to her. She'd really hate to have any grief between her lover and her son, or any awkwardness.

Squeezing Harry's hand, she released it so he could go fetch the memories if that was his plan; assuming he even had them in the house.

He chuckled softly, both at the idea of Snape pretending to hate the kitten and the lovestruck look on Lily's face as she spoke about him. Well, he was happy for her. He wasn't looking forward to the news being broken to James, but they would get through it.

"Well, I'm glad to hear they're taking well to each other," he grinned, pushing up to his feet. "I'll go get the memories."

Squeezing her shoulder as he passed her, he made his way out of the kitchen and upstairs. After retrieving the memories, he returned to the kitchen table to offer her the vial. It was strange to be returning them after all this time. Sometimes he had wondered why he kept them, but it seemed ... wrong to destroy them.

Lily took the vial from him, turning it a little as she gazed at the milky, swirling memories inside of it. While she wondered what they contained - the things she hadn't been around to see - she would never think to go look.

If Severus wanted her to know, he'd tell her. "Surprised you kept them," she admitted quietly as she turned the container once more before tucking it into her pocket. "But I imagine he'll be glad to have them back."

Even if he wouldn't necessarily be glad of the reminder someone else had held them.

"I should go though. I told Relic I'd pop in today in case he needed help with the ... weekend rush, such as it was." She smiled a little, but it was getting closer to Halloween and there was a peak in interest in Samhain spells and books that contained them.

She would go drop the memories off first though, so she wasn't carrying them around all day.

"I wasn't sure what else to do with them," he admitted with a light shrug, "it seemed ... disrespectful to destroy them."

He did wonder if Severus would really appreciate this transaction. Maybe he would have been happier believing Harry got rid of them or some such thing, but if they were going to be in existence, Snape did deserve to have them back.

"Well, thank you for the biscuits and ... good luck with the delivery of the memories," he added with a half smile.

She nodded slightly before she smiled as she stood up. Leaning over, she pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. "You're welcome, and thank you. If you need anything, you know you can owl me, right?"

She'd offer for him to stop by, save that she didn't think Sev would appreciate it, or that Harry would be comfortable with it. "Perhaps I'll bring Jeremy around for you to meet," she reflected on the tail of that thought. "Tell my grandson I said hello the next time you see him," she continued.

"And I'll let you know how the memory delivery goes," she assure him before she ran her fingers softly over his hair.

"I know," he assured her, smiling softly down at her. He thought he should have brought up the holidays and how they wanted to work those, but there was plenty of time for that and he could send an owl.

"I'll tell him. I'll remind him about sending owls as well, if he's going to keep dodging us all," he smiled. "And I'd definitely like to meet Jeremy."

Wrapping his arms around her, he gave her a quick, but warm hug. Even if it would be strange to know his mother was ... dating Severus Snape, he couldn't deny how happy it made her and he was glad for that.

"It would be nice to get an owl from my grandson," she agreed as she returned Harry's hug. "I love you," she reminded him softly as she stroked her fingers over his hair again, emerald eyes sparkling.

While she was certain Harry knew that, it never hurt to say it every now and again. Who didn't like hearing that they were loved? "I'll be around again soon," she promised before she started toward the door. She had memories to drop off, and then to check into the shop in case she was needed.

"I love you too," he replied with a smile, not at all minding the reminder. He didn't think he would ever grow tired of hearing it, to be honest.

"See you soon," he agreed as she started for the door and he knew she could show herself out.
