They'd done a lot of shopping that day, but Benjy was brand new. And like a child, as far as his desire to see everything went. They'd been into every shop in Diagon, regardless of whether or not he needed anything from them.
Which meant they'd gone to the pet store.
Which meant Lily had fallen in love with a small, black kneazle with darker grey flecks in his fur and huge blue eyes.
She was informed by the shopkeep that they were animals that required licenses to own, though they weren't difficult to acquire. So she'd purchased a book on their care and wandered over to the Ministry, leaving Benjy and Cas to their own devices so they could quibble over decor and furniture for their flat.
Reading the book while waiting for her chance to speak with someone for the licensing procedure had proved to be a good idea, and she'd engaged in a lively discussion with the licenser, leaving shortly thereafter with said license.
Rather pleased with herself, she'd purchased food and care items, and discussed the return policy in the event the kneazle didn't take well to Severus. She thought they'd get along just fine, but she was overly optimistic at times. The kitten seemed to have taken to her just fine.
Once she got everything home, she closed her door and set the kneazle loose in her room to let it get used to the surroundings slowly. It really was adorable, and she was attempting to discern what sort of name would fit ... but maybe she'd let Sev lend a hand in that.
After she introduced them.
Which she'd have to do soon.
She only then wondered if he'd be fussed about it. A kneazle wasn't exactly a garden, after all. But she supposed as long as it didn't go about destroying things, they'd be all right. Trailing one of the toys along the floor, she listened to the rest of the house - not that Severus ever made any sound when he moved. But there might be the tell-tale sound of a door closing if he was coming upstairs, or inside.
Watching as the feline-like animal pounced the string, Lily smiled.
