RP: Tea and Catching Up
Characters: Lily, Cas
Time/Date: Monday, October 10, 2023
Location: Cafe, Diagon Alley
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily and Cas catch up
Status: Complete

Lily spent most of the morning debating what she wanted to reveal to Cas about her current conundrum. She was pretty sure she mostly had everything worked out in her head, but ... maybe voicing some of it and hearing an unattached opinion might clear up a few of the stickier points.

After making sure everything was set at the store, Lily bid Relic a fare well before striking out for the cafe she'd agreed to meet Cas at. She was a touch early, but it would give her time to find a table.

A quiet table where they could talk and catch up.

Stepping inside, Lily smiled to the cashier. She frequented the place often enough when she was fetching tea for the shop that she supposed she was something of a regular. Moving to a table near the back, Lily settled down and watched the door for Cas.

Cas arrived a few minutes before their appointed rendezvous, quickly finding Lily in the cafe. She smiled and waved. Noticing the somewhat secluded table, she let out a small sigh of relief. There was no reason she couldn't out and out tell Lily somewhere more public; it was just that public discussions with her current track record of shouting things across crowded rooms, that might not have been the best of plans.

"Hello!" She said, sitting down. "How're things on your end of the future?"

Lily smiled brightly when Cas approached, and she chuckled softly at the question. "They aren't so bad, really," she agreed with a slight nod. All things considered, they really weren't. She had a job, a stable, happy family, a place to live, and plenty of acquaintances and friends.

"Been keeping up with things at the school ... there's a couple dozen foreign students there. I haven't been since they arrived, but I'm going in tomorrow to do a bit of work in the potions lab, so I imagine I'll bump into them, or LilyLu will introduce me to a few she's ... met."

Lily made a gesture for one of the servers to get his attention, and once he arrived, she placed her order before nodding to Cas.

Cas ordered, before turning back to Lily. "Met? You make it sound more ominous than it probably should. What, has she made plans to ... to ... I dunno. Do something befitting of her grandfather and friends." A funny look crossed Cas's face as the realization shook her that, yes, it might be something they would, and could do, because they were there.

"So, your news first? Or I could tell you about who the bloody hell killed me or how I continue my rather tactless trend of communication," she offered.

"Oh, she's already quite firmly in cahoots with them. I hear she fancies Sirius." Lily paused. "Thought she had a bit more sense than that, really."

Sirius had never grown up as much as James had. She cared for him, was fond of him, but she'd highly discourage her granddaughter from pursuing anything more than friendship with Sirius.

"But no. According to her owl, she spent most of the weekend getting to know the visitors."

Lily smiled and shrugged slightly. "My news isn't really news so much as it's a rambling conundrum, so let's hear about your epic shouting skills."

"She ... Oh, Merlin, if she dates him, that's just going to be bloody strange. I mean, he's, technically, in his sixties! And his granddad's best mate! Not like that really matters given that, for all intents and purposes, he's all of sixteen..." Cas trailed off. "As for my shouting skills, well, that's quite something. Benjy showed up somewhere outside of Mungo's and came in, looking for me. As he left, he made some joke about moving in with me, and I told him feel free. Except, that, well, I'm not sure how serious was, and I didn't tell him so much as shout it across the lobby of St. Mungo's as he was walking out." Cas paused, biting her lip. "So, that ... that was special. What's your conundrum?"

"It wouldn't be a bad idea, would it? To have someone to split rent with and the like, if the place is big enough for the both of you."

Granted, depending on their relationship, it might get ... awkward.

"From what I recall of him, he was a friendly, charming bloke," Lily offered with a grin. "Be better than being stuck in the Leaky 'til he can get on his feet properly."

She wondered if Benjy's family was still alive, or if he'd had kids.

Lily offered Cas a little smile and a shrug to her inquiry. "Honestly, I'm not sure. I ... you know I'm staying with Sev. And ... well, course of conversation, when I mentioned it just being temporary, he said he wanted me to stay.

"I just don't know if it's a good idea, given how ... how I've started feeling about him. Again. Like I did before our dramatic falling-out." Honestly, she wasn't sure if Cas knew - or had suspected - how she'd really felt about Sev. Lily had never come out and said it to anyone, but Remus had suspected, so likely others had as well.

"It's ... I'm not even sure why or how this has blown up so in my mind. Why it should matter how I feel. I can control myself and probably not fling myself at him, but ..."

She hesitated again. "But someone said something that only encourages these silly feelings."

"It ... it might work. It's a big enough place, and it's bloody quiet, and frankly, a little unnerving to be alone there with all this stuff that isn't even mine. I mean, of course, it's mine, but it doesn't feel like mine." Cas shifted. "I mean, for a temporary stint, it couldn't be too awkward to explain, yeah? He hasn't got anyone --at least as far as I know --; I haven't got anyone. Not like it'd cause a stir."

As for the Severus debacle, well, that was quite something. Cas had wondered, every now and then, if Lily felt something more for Severus Snape, but she had never seriously considered it. She'd assumed she was reading too far into things, and should just keep her musings to herself. "Well, knowing you for the time I have, I can honestly give you my full confidence that you will not fling yourself at him; you've got enough dignity and self-respect not to do that. You've got plenty of self-control and whatever you want your limits to be you'll hold to them. I'd say that, if you've got comfortable living arrangements, and you're comfortable with him, not to ruin your situation. But that's just me," she added hastily. "You'll figure something out, I'm sure of that."

"I imagine he'd appreciate having somewhere more homey than the Leaky, and a familiar face to help him through things," Lily said gently.

"I know if I hadn't had family - even though I didn't know them - I would have wanted to room with someone I knew."

She did smile at Dorcas' confidence in her. It was true enough though. She could restrain herself. "It is nice enough there," she admitted. "Quiet, but I can always go out when I want something louder. And he's got a nice back yard fit to garden in."

Lily shrugged. "Well. We'll work things out, I'm sure."

"That's what I was thinking; the food's better over there, though," she joked. Turning serious, she gnawed on her lip. "If it even happens. He might prefer being at the Leaky." Cas couldn't decide what would be better; it was just a hypothetical, in any case.

Cas smiled. "If you're comfortable there, and it's big enough for you to garden in, I'd say go with it. If things go wonky, move out. Certainly, there's going to be some who are a little more surprised than others, but they'll adjust. What's the worst that happens?"

"Well, you should owl him and find out," she encouraged. "If he wasn't completely joking, then he might appreciate the offer. I can't imagine anyone preferring ..." Lily trailed off. "No, all right, I could see Benjy there. He's always one to chat up people, wasn't he?"

Lily grinned and fell silent as the server returned with their tea. Offering him a nod, she picked up one of the scones and broke off a piece of it.

"The worst that happens," Lily said thoughtfully, "is I completely lose my mind and wind up lying in wait, naked in his bed some night," she decided, nodding slowly. "Is it really sad that I've actually given semi-serious consideration to doing just that? But I think that's a bit ... Gryffindorish, even for me.

"I'm just ... not sure how to approach this with him. Or if I want to. I mean, why ... why screw up a friendship because I have feelings left over from school?"

Which was making incredibly light of it, she knew. They weren't just left over feelings. They were adult feelings that had grown from the feelings she'd harbored as a teenager.

"He always has been, and I'm not sure he'd be happy in the great gaping flat. I dunno; I've let my mouth run me into another awkward situation." Sadly, it wasn't the first nor, Cas suspected, would it be the last. She buttered a scone absently, contemplating the difficulty of placing a silencing charm on herself in the future.

"Well," Cas began. "You're a lot more frank than I am and, if you actually do that, I will admire your courage greatly. I wouldn't say it's sad, by any means; I would say it's a sign that, despite these ... odd circumstances, you haven't lost your confidence which, not unlike your sense of humor, is fairly important. Or so I've been told."

She took a bite of her scone, then swallowed before continuing. "As for broaching the subject, I've got nothing. I've always been useless at talking to boys I've fancied, and I doubt that's improved with my death and resurrection or whatever this is. If you feel strongly enough, and there's a right moment, and you aren't horribly awkward, I would tell you to try to ease it in? But that's a bit hypocritical, I admit. I know I could never do it."

"Owl him," she encouraged. "He's probably out of his mind with boredom by now." Or looking for a job, or something. "I'm sure he knows all about your mouth." Lily frowned. "Not ..." She rolled her eyes at herself and waved her free hand. "You know what I mean."

Lily tilted her head and shrugged. "Courage, foolishness. The line is so thin."

Gazing thoughtfully around, Lily contemplated that. "I think he's got to have some idea by now. I'm a bit of an open book when it comes to ... emotions and the like. I just ... if he knows, or suspects, and hasn't done anything ..." Lily exhaled through loosely pursed lips. "I don't know. I'm just over thinking it, I know. Because you're right. What's the worst that happens? I make a fool of myself, we're awkward for a bit, and things smooth out and we're back to where we are now."

"You're probably right. I'll figure out how to phrase it, hopefully without a great deal of awkwardness." Cas snickered at her friend's comment. "I know what you mean, Lily. Don't worry, my mind's too full of future to be in the gutter."

Cas nodded. "The awkwardness isn't pleasant, but, I mean, the two of you are living together. I'm going to assume that means that temporary discomfort isn't going to really force a wedge between the two of you. And, while I admit I don't know him very well, I would take his suggestion that the living arrangements be a little more in the vein of permanence to be a sign that the awkward curtain isn't likely to fall between the two of you." Cas sipped her tea. "Besides, if he's already got some idea, one of you has to make the first step."

"No, it shouldn't," she agreed. "Suppose if it gets too bad I'll just ... bring it to a head again and force our way past the awkward."

Nibbling at the scone, she smiled softly and shrugged. "Wish he'd take the first step. I don't think it would ever occur to him to show up naked in my bed." She grinned at the idea of it though.

"Suppose I'll just see how it goes," she decided. Which, she realized, meant she'd more or less made up her mind to ... do something about the feelings she'd been warring with.

Oh, boy.

"So, moving on to less brain-breaking topics," Lily said with a faint laugh. "We should do something for Halloween," she mused. "Maybe ... throw some sort of a party or at least get together."

"You're bold enough; whatever happens, you'll make sure it goes the way it should," Cas said, attempting to reassure her friend. "As for the naked bit, my darling Lily, I can't think of many people who would have that thought," she teased.

"As for Halloween, you're absolutely right! We should celebrate, or at least go out. I mean, for Merlin's sake, we're alive again, and it's safe to go out, and we are young. These are all calls for revelry and merrymaking in some form." Cas took a sip from her cup and grinned. "That's certainly a perk to this future business: it's safe to be out and about in the evening hours. I'd forgotten how much fun it could be!"

Or she'd bungle it so badly she'd never be able to show her face around him again. Really, it could go either way. Lord, she wished she could get over those doubts.

"We died on Halloween," Lily said softly. "It'll be nice to replace that with some more cheerful memories. Celebratory ones."

Her eyes half-closed as her thoughts drifted. She knew they'd be doing something at the school. Probably have a Hogsmeade trip right before, too. Maybe she'd go out and pal around with the boys for a bit if it wasn't too awkward - or at least meet LilyLuna for a chat.

"We should though. Plan something. We'll get Benjy in on it. By Halloween, he'll probably be networked to the entire wizarding world."

Cas let out a sigh at the reminder of the scars Halloween had for Lily. "Definitely a sign that it needs better memories. Much better ones. Ones that don't involve death and surprise time travel." She laughed at Lily's comment on Benjy. "Halloween? Lily, you underestimate him. He'll be networked to the entire wizarding world by at least a week before that," she teased.

Lily grinned to Cas' comment about Benjy. "Well, I did say by Halloween," she pointed out with a grin. "But no, I imagine he'll be chatting up and getting himself into things he's got no business being in. Like a dog left home alone in an unguarded house..." she teased.

Really though, she was glad he was back. It made her hopeful that more people they knew, more people who'd died long before their time, would return as well.

Lapsing into comfortable silence, Lily let her thoughts roam. There had to be a way to work things carefully so that she didn't make a horrible fool of herself in front of Severus. But she'd never know if she didn't ask, so she'd have to ask.

"What're youre plans for the rest of the week?" she murmured as she eased out of her thoughts.

"Dinner with Benjy ... a staff meeting ... nothing too exciting." She took a sip of her tea. "I think I might be going with you two on Thursday?"

Cas took a sip of her tea, mulling over the events of the past few days. It wasn't like her life had really been lacking in excitement, but she was thrilled to have Benjy there and old enough to remember her as she was. She wondered if she'd see Marlene or the Longbottoms again, and if they'd remember her.

"Ah," Lily said with a smile. "Good. We can have lively debates over his choice of attire and help with decorations for his residence."

She lapsed again into comfortable silence as she sipped her tea. Emerald gaze wandered over the other patrons and she offered a smile to anyone who happened to catch her eye.

"It'll be good, getting all of us together again."

"It feels less strange having another person around now," Cas said. "The bulk of the returnees, from what I gather, are Order members, or were Order members, so it makes for good company. We'll do something brilliant on Halloween; even if it's only the three of us. Well, four, if Severus is interested in whatever we concoct."

Lily laughed quietly. "I doubt very much Severus would be interested in attending. He's a bit ... anti-social." She looked thoughtful. "Perhaps my grandson would be interested. He's about our age."

But then, he probably had friends and plans of his own. Lily shrugged. They could see who they'd made friends with and invite acquaintances.

"Well, they're both welcome. It's strange that your grandson's our age, or thereabouts." She paused. "I don't know if the fact that he's your grandson should make me feel old, or just very out of place," she finished, grinning. "Either way, I'm sure it'll work out."

"It shouldn't make us feel old," Lily chastised playfully. "We're just entering the fun part of our lives. Young and carefree with no shadow of war looming over us. We're simply a bit misplaced in the time stream, that's all."

She finished off her tea and plucked at the last bits of her scone. "It'll be fun, regardless. Whoever shows up, or doesn't."

Emerald eyes shifted to the clock and she thought she should probably be on her way. "Suppose I should head out. There's a potion I want to tackle tomorrow that I've got to do some reading for."

"That makes it sound less strange; much preferable to being a twenty-year-old in the role of a sixty-something."

Cas drained the last of tea, and finished off her scone. Brushing off her pants, she caught sight of her own watch. "Bugger. Suppose you're right. Good luck with the potion; I'm certain you won't have lost your touch at all," she grinned. "I've got to get back to paperwork. What remains of it, at least."

"Paperwork," Lily echoed with a grin. "Glad I haven't got much of that." She thought even if she was assisting Severus, she still wouldn't have much, unless she was doing the book-keeping.

And even then, her paperwork would have a point.

Leaving money to cover the bill, Lily rose. "Well, I will see you and Benjy on Thursday. Until then, don't drown in paperwork or die of papercuts."

"You'll have to let me cover the tab next time," she said, standing up. "Benjy's too new and I owe you two meals. As for the paperwork, I make no guarantees. None. If it avalanches on top of me, I suspect someone will eventually notice and think to send rescue, or, I'll dig myself out. The papercuts will simply require dittany. And some sort of way to punish the offending sheets," she said, smirking.

"Could always burn them," she offered with a cheeky grin. "I hear that's a popular punishment for papers."

She did nod to acknowledge the offer of Cas picking up for food next time, and she made a note to do just that.

"Take care, and keep in touch. I'll let you know what time and where on Thursday, unless Benjy gets to you first."
