RP: Mouse in the Snake Den
Characters: Sasha, Libra
Time/Date: After dinner, Sunday October 9
Location: Slytherin Commons
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: The little mouse wants everyone to go to bed so she can sneak out to spy
Status: Complete

Sasha had settled herself in a corner of the Slytherin commons, a book clutched in her hands. It was closed, but she was making no pretense of reading anyway. Wide, dark eyes were watching the others in the commons. She'd been separated from Hans and Leif, and she knew them best, through Jan. She knew the others who had come over from her school, of course, but she wasn't on friend or acquaintance terms with most of them.

Opening her journal, she was pleased to see Jan's familiar writing, and for a little while, she absorbed herself in written conversation with him. It wasn't the same, of course, but it was something.

Eventually though, he had to go study for an exam, and Sasha was left to her own devices. It wasn't nearly late enough to sneak out and set about spying yet, so that meant she was forced to endure the commons for a bit longer. She didn't imagine anyone would bother her; she didn't think she looked very approachable.

But ... maybe the allure of the foreign girl would be enough to overcome that for some of them.

It was the simple tantalizing fact that neither her brother nor her cousin were looking over her shoulder for once that made Libra decide it was time to make friendly with the foreign students.

She would have much preferred that she find one that was approachable, but beggars couldn't be choosers.

Putting on a pleasant enough smile, Libra got up from her place on the other side of the commons and, textbook in hand, crossed the room to the girl in the corner. It didn't even cross Libra's mind that the foreign girl might not like company.

Libra smiled again when she reached the corner and, without asking, settled into the nearest seating area. "You're one of the Durmstrang students," she greeted. "Right?"

Sasha gazed to the younger blond witch approaching her, studying her. "I am, yes," Sasha agreed softly.

She wasn't surprised that someone wanted to talk to her. The other Durmstrang students that had been put into this house all seemed to have conversation partners, or were at least sitting and studying with groups of people.

She was the only one who'd put herself in an anti-social position. "I am Sasha Godina," she introduced herself, and belatedly released her book to extend her right hand to the witch.

"Libra Malfoy." She reached across the gap to briefly take the other witch's hand. Once she settled back into her seat again, Libra balanced her textbook on her lap and surveyed the other girl.

She really didn't look that much older than she was. Libra was sort of curious about that. Maybe it was because the other girl seemed so tiny.

"Pleasure. How are you adjusting to the climate?"

Small talk seemed the way to go for the moment.

Sasha thought carefully about her words before she spoke. "It is varmer than I am used to," she admitted.

She and Jan had practiced speaking English, and the word order still sometimes threw her ... but Jan had been a good teacher. Not for the first time (and no doubt not for the last) she wished he was here.

Still, he'd promised her they'd have the summer, and she'd be with him then before her last year of school started it up.

"Vhere ve are from, it is very cold, and darker in the winter months. Ve are far north." She didn't think that counted as giving too much away. It was common knowledge they were from the far north.

It wasn't like anyone could just stroll up there and find the school.

"Is this like going on holiday to the beaches?" Libra wondered, drawing her knees up to rest her chin on. She shot a quick glance around the commons, checking to make sure Aries hadn't yet appeared.

Satisfied that he hadn't, Libra switched her attention back to Sasha.

"I don't know that I would survive going far north," she mused. "It would be much too cold for me, I would imagine."

Sasha wasn't sure what to make of the question. On holidays, to the beaches? This was nothing like a holiday or a beach. "No," she said as her brow furrowed slightly. "It is like attending school in a different building with different faces, and houses vith different separations."

She grunted slightly when Libra admitted to it being too cold. "Very like," she agreed. "Ve are used to it. It is our life," she said softly.

Libra's forehead wrinkled a little as she realized that some of what she said might get lost in translation with this conversation. She wasn't sure how she felt about that. Annoyed, maybe.

"Have you ever thought about moving?" Libra gestured vaguely. "After school is over. You're almost finished, correct? Seventh year?"

Almost finished. She'd have to pretend, but she'd known that coming in. "I vill move vhere Jan moves," she said softly, but firmly. "He is my boyfriend, though he vas not chosen to come here to Hogwarts. I do not think he vishes to move far from vhere ve are now," she said quietly.

Dark eyes slipped toward the clock, but it was still somehow impossibly early. Not that she could make an easy escape from this conversation, but she'd like to.

Still, she had her answers lined up. The lies she was sticking to.

Libra observed Sasha watching the clock and barely held back a pout. She couldn't entirely disguise that she had slipped at least three shades closer to sullen, though.

Despite it, her voice remained cheerful.

"So what does your boyfriend study at school?"

"He studies as ve all do," Sasha said, her brow furrowing slightly. "The core classes, and a few extra curriculars. He is unsure which path he wishes to pursue after ve haff finished vith school, so he is ensuring he has as many options open as he can."

Talking about Jan made her miss Jan, and she fingered the edge of her journal thoughtfully.

"Do you haff a boyfriend?" she inquired of the younger girl, studying her curiously. "Or do you prefer to haff a girlfriend?"

Libra wrinkled her nose, aware again that the language gap was a bit of a problem when it came to small talk. She got the general answer she wanted in the end, at least. She'd have to ask someone else more about the school's curriculum if the fancy struck her again.

Sasha's next question threw her.

To the point that she had to laugh.

She didn't know what her parents would do if she came home with a girlfriend. It wasn't what one did in pureblood families. Not out in the open, at the very least.

"I've had a few boyfriends," Libra remarked with a slight shrug. "Nothing very serious yet, of course."

No one had caught her interest for long enough.

Sasha nodded slightly. She hadn't had any boyfriends before Jan, but ... she'd wanted Jan as long as she could recall and no boy had measured up to him, so she hadn't bothered.

"Of course," Sasha agreed, though she had no idea why that was an 'of course'. Perhaps because she was so young? She would not be "serious" so young.

"I think perhaps I vill go up to bed now. But it vas nice to speak vith you, Libra."

"You, too," Libra murmured, offering a vague smile to the other girl before getting up to move to another part of the commons in search of more conversation.

"Let's speak again soon, shall we?"

It was all politeness. She didn't truly understand the fascination with the foreign students. All they were was difficult to talk with.

"Of course," Sasha agreed as she gathered up her things and began to wander toward the dorms. She could just ... wander back down later to begin her spying. Or sneak down as a mouse, but she wasn't inclined to mouse her way to the professor's wing.

Offering Libra a smile, she turned to slither off to the dorms.
