Characters: LilyLu, Hans
Time/Date: Evening, Friday October 7, 2023
Location: Common-commons
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily stalks the common-commons in the hopes of meeting one of the foreign kids
Status: Complete

Yes, they had foreign students in the Gryffindor commons, but Lily didn't want to scare them all off the first night. Therefore, the obvious solution was to stalk the common-commons in the hopes of meeting some of the other houses' foreign students and scaring them first.

Or making friends, but she was fairly certain her over-enthusiasm would be somewhat off-putting, at least at first.

Bouncing herself down onto one of the couches, Lily tilted her head and gazed toward the door as if she could will it to open - and will the opener to be one of their visitors. With her luck, it'd probably be her brother or something.

Without even a book as pretense for studying, Lily sat, and waited.

Hans had been oh-so-intrigued by their arrival at the school. There were many new things to do and new faces to interact with. He believed the term for that here was "snogging". It sounded sort of off-putting to him. It rhymed with frog and dog.

Who would want to go dogging? It made little sense and much silliness.

Pushing all that to another day's topics, though, Hans had decided to make his way to the common-commons. Or whatever it was they were calling it. It would be an adventure in learning his way about the place. Putting the home school to less of a home turf advantage.

Hans wanted to be picked to win for his school, after all. Every little thing counted.

When he at last found his way, Hans stepped inside the common room and surveyed the place. Like elsewhere, the castle was too warm for his taste (he was wandering about the castle in what would amount to summer clothes normally).

There was a girl there sitting. He didn't think he knew her from any other meetings, but that could soon be solved.

"Vot is this for? For sitting? That is vot you are doing? And vith the vaiting?"

Direct. That was his approach to life.

Lily did not squeal, bounce in her seat, or clap, but it was a close thing on all three of those reactions. She was, however, grinning a bit idiotically, in a way that would surely make Jamie roll his eyes and laugh.

"It's a multi-house common room," she said. Lily made every effort to keep her voice slow enough that he could understand, but it was tough when she could get talking a mile a minute. "So it's for studying or talking to your mates or doing homework or reading or playing games. Whatever you feel like doing," she elaborated.

Wide brown eyes flicked over him and she wondered which one he was, if she'd talked to him in the journals at all. She was guessing Durmstrang from the accent, and she knew two of them were werewolves. Was this one of them? She had no way of knowing, and she thought it might be a good idea to introduce herself.

"I'm Lily. Lily Luna Potter." She stood up from the couch and thrust one hand out toward him, beaming.

Hans quirked an eyebrow in mild bemusement as Lily spoke. There were a few words he missed (like multi-house), but he got the gist of it for the most part. And he caught her name.

Sort of.

Lily-Lily-Luna?

He would avoid her name for a little while until he had a firmer grasp on how it went. The surname was easy enough to figure out. Hans had heard a lot about the Potters and he knew that it was a Potter who had made it through the Tri-Wizard in one of its last incarnations.

Would that make this girl competition? She looked too young.

"I am being Hans Erwan," he said slowly, taking Lily's hand and bowing slightly. "Vot do they say? That it is being pleasurable? I haff to vork on the terms."

"Pleasure to meet you, usually," Lily said. She was curious about the various levels of comprehension and translation and fluency among the students, and wondered if there were some who just didn't speak English at all.

"I'm sure someone would be happy to help you learn the slang and common phrases," Lily offered. She caught herself starting to bounce a little on the couch. "So, how do you like it here so far?" she asked as she stilled herself on the couch, gesturing for him to have a seat somewhere in the room. Nearby, preferably. "And how was the trip? You guys come on the boat, right?" She wished she'd been out to see the arrival, but no such luck.

Hans filed that away for future forgetting. His grasp on English depended on his concentration and usually he was focused on many other things. Speaking the language was one of those things that seemed trivial.

Should not the students of Hogwarts learn their language?

It only seemed fair! That was why Durmstrang would win. The extra effort made hem stronger.

Taking Lily's cue, Hans settled himself onto the nearest chair, frowning only a little when he sank into it. He halfway considered sitting on the arm before deciding it was fine and turning his glance back to Lily.

"It vos dark," Hans decided after deliberating for a bit. "Very dark. And vet."

He gestured to her. "Haff you ever boated? How is your school traveling at times?"

"Well, as first years, we take the boats across the lake. To get from the train to the school, we have carriages pulled by thestrals." She wondered if they had thestrals in ... wherever Durmstrang was, and supposed it would come up if they didn't and he had to ask for clarification.

"I'm not sure how we'd travel if we were going to another school though," she admitted, her brow furrowing. They didn't have a boat, and she didn't think the thestrals could fly the carriages. They didn't have Abraxan, either.

Damn. She filed that away as a question to pester someone with. Her dad might know.

"So, are you excited to be here? Excited to put your name in? I'm too young, otherwise I would," she admitted.

"Vot is that? The vot you are using for carriages?"

The word wasn't familiar to him, but Hans chalked it up to being unfamiliar with a large majority of English terms. He was rather content to let most of it babble by him for the rest of his stay.

"I am excited to be vinning," Hans shared, continuing. "I vill be champion. Too young... it is no good. Vot about knowledge? Age is not determining."

And if the Hogwarts champion was younger, there would be an easier chance of winning.

"Thestrals. They're a magical creature, kind of like ... sort of skeletal horses, with wings. I've only seen pictures. They're invisible to anyone who hasn't personally witnessed death. My dad can see them," she said. "Bet my gran can, too," she reflected. She'd seen James die, right?

Which was six colors of disturbing, and her brow furrowed briefly before she shook it off. But on that note, maybe all of the formerly deceased could see thestrals since they'd been dead.

The things she'd never thought about before.

"I know. Age shouldn't be an issue. My dad was underage when he was chosen, but that was part of some whole big plot to get him killed. But there is an age restriction on this one. Only seventeen year olds can put in their names. Lan, one of my friends, he's turning seventeen the day of the ceremony. Or the day before." She'd have to double-check with Tristan to find out for sure. "So he's putting his name in. Him and Tristan."

She wondered if Al was, and she thought she'd have to track him down and find out for sure. She also wondered if their mother was talking him out of it, and wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

Death? Hogwarts was perhaps a darker place than Hans had first imagined. Why use such creatures when a normal horse should suffice just as well? It seemed like some former Headmaster had had a dark sense of humor.

"I am knowing this Tristan!" Hans grinned, pleased to be able to put names to faces. "He and I were speaking once before in the books. Leif, he is also in the knowing of Tristan."

Though who was to tell if Lily would know of Leif? The other boy was memorable enough, though, so Hans would assume she must have seen something of him.

"Oh, everyone will know Tristan. I don't think any one of you visitors is going to go back to school without knowing everything there is to know about Tristan."

Lily was also willing to bet Tris was going to hit on at least one of them, but ... well, he flirted with everyone. So no surprise there.

"I think I saw ... about Leif. In the journals." She hadn't checked hers lately though, and she wouldn't have been surprised to find she'd lost hers again.

Having entirely too much fun with this, Lily grinned to Hans. "Soooo, is there anything you want to know about the school that wasn't covered in the tour? I am a prefect and have lots of information at hand."

"Vhich are single, vhere one vill not be being caught vandering past hours." Hans grinned, leaning back in his chair as he watched Lily. "Not that I vill do that. It is only useful knowledge, yes?"

He would need to track down Leif at some point in the next few days and see what the other boy had discovered so far about Hogwarts. It was a pity that he couldn't trip the other boy and have him break his leg to get him out of the running.

Bones fixed so easily.

Hans would be good. He would be friends with his school mates and cheer on whoever was champion.

"Hm. Girls or guys?" Lily grinned. Maybe it wasn't a question a lot of people would think to ask, but she'd known Tris as long as she'd been at school, so she was very aware not every guy liked girls.

"As for where you won't get caught, it depends on who's doing rounds. There're a couple of alcoves up on the seventh floor. The one with the bench is pretty well known, so not as private as it could be. There're a few places down in the dungeons, and one I'm pretty sure not a lot of people know about. Jamie - my big brother - pointed it out to me before he realized it might be a bad idea to teach his baby sister good places to hide to snog."

Or just to hide in general.

"Both." Hans grinned back as he rolled his shoulders, readjusting his position in the chair.

Maybe he wanted one for himself and one for competition. Maybe he wanted both for himself. That was not something he would be telling straight, but it was something he was fine with letting other wonder about.

Hans took note of the places Lily told him, vowing to go late and try to find the alcoves and hidden corners. Maybe tomorrow he would start a full-scale scouring of the castle and see what secrets it held. Perhaps he would recruit Leif, perhaps he wouldn't. All of his plans were still airborne.

"That's a pretty long list," Lily pointed out. "Though I guess if we restricted it to sixth and seventh years ..." she looked thoughtful. "Unless you were willing to venture into fifth years," she added with a grin. "Because that would be the group that Meg and I are in."

She exhaled thoughtfully. "Tristan, Landon, but I'm not sure he likes boys. Rose, me, Meghan, probably some Slytherins that I don't know very well." She opted not to mention Hugo since she didn't think he was publicly out yet.

Lily then proceeded to rattle off a longer list of names, mentioning their houses as she went along so he'd know what colors to look for when it came to recognizing people.

"Those're just the ones I know personally that are unattached and might possibly maybe consider hooking up with a foreign kid," she declared with a nod.

Hans laughed, nodding enthusiastically. "I vould not be haffing trouble vith this "hooking up"," he declared.

He would only have trouble remembering all the names! It was endlessly entertaining to hear what information Lily had to share. Perhaps he would lure her into being his tour guide for the castle until he had a bearing on most of its secrets.

Because surely it had some? No magical castle would be self-respecting if it didn't.

"Vot about secret passages? Are you also being in the knowledge about those?"

"Oh, no. I don't think there's a single visitor that'll be leaving unsnogged," Lily agreed. "You know, assuming they want to. It's the magic of the accents, I'm sure," she agreed.

Though really, the formerly deceased had their own allure. Even if it would be incredibly weird to hook up with her dad's godfather.

She nodded. "I know of a few, sure. There're some that you're bound to find on your own, and some that require someone to pass along a trick or tip. Like, how to get into the kitchen."

She wasn't going to share the map, or the Room of Requirement, or the more secret secret passages ... but she'd show him a few she'd learned about her second year.

Hans pushed himself to his feet and held out a hand to Lily should she be so inclined. "Vould it be being proper to ask for an tour? Perhaps ve could be finding Leif and the kitchens, yes?"

Lily grinned lightly when he stood up. She took his hand and pulled herself to her feet. "Sure. I can give you a little tour. I'm sure the others are getting toured around, too. We'll probably run into some of them. Maybe Leif's already done with the kitchens and has moved on to snogging," she offered.

It really, really wouldn't surprise her if there was already some hooking up going on. They were all teenagers with foreign guests about their age. There were bound to be some bad decisions and everyone no doubt wanted to be the first to snog the newcomers.

Hans started to lead the way out, then thought better of it and paused for direction from Lily. Meanwhile he shook his head at the idea of Leif moving on to snogging already.

"I vill loose all my respect from Leif. He is... how do you say.. shooting the jumper with an gun." Hans nodded, pleased with that analogy. "Ve must at least be waiting and voting on vhich to snog. Delegations are being needed."

"Jumping the gun," Lily corrected with a grin, though Hans' way definitely came with an interesting visual.

"So you'd vote ... on who one of your schoolmates could snog?" She inquired, brows elevating. "Sucks for those of us who get voted out," she protested with a slight pout.

"But ... you don't know where he is or what he's doing. I mean, he could be snogging Tristan right now."

Why would one jump a gun? It made much more sense to shoot a jumper, did it not? Hans would never get the hang of the English phrases just because so few were logical. Shooting the jumper was a phrase he could stand behind. This other? It was rubbish.

"I vill be sure to vote your way," Hans promised with a grin. "And if Leif is snogging Tristan, our first touring should be the finding of him."

"Well, what if I don't like the bloke you've voted to snog me?" Lily protested with a grin and a soft laugh.

She tried to figure out where Tris was likely to go if he was snogging someone, and decided one of the alcoves closer to the 'claw tower.

So they'd start there.

Lily led them out of the common-commons and started up toward the Ravenclaw tower. "He probably hasn't gone far from his house if he's not in his house," Lily volunteered as she climbed one of the staircases.

Hans eyed the stairs with distrust as they climbed. It was absolutely stellar that the stairs in the castle moved about, but he still wasn't convinced that they were safe. He was counting on werewolf reflexes to save him if the stairs dropped away in front of him.

"Vhich boy should I vote for you?" Hans inquired, glancing away from the stairs and back to Lily. "Ve could go into the Ravenclaw room of commons and pick von out."

Lily shook her head. "I don't ... think we can," she said. "I mean, you can because they put you in there, but ... pretty sure we're not allowed to cross into other houses commons."

She'd never seen anyone on the map in the wrong commons, at any rate.

"But I don't know any of them well enough to decide which one I'd want," she decided. That, and she was still kind of hung up on the idea of Sirius. "Maybe I'll stick to some of the Beauxbatons boys that wound up in my commons," she mused. "Wonder if they've got the same sort of voting system in place."

Hans started, looking over at Lily in shock.

"Beuxbatons?" He shook his head violently. "No, I vould think you vould have better taste! Durmstrang. Those vhich are there are the vons you vould be liking, yes?"

He wasn't exactly sure why Beuxbatons was more the enemy than Hogwarts, but they were.

"Well, I don't know. Maybe I'll have to try one of each and decide which one I like better," she decided as they strolled along. After ascending the last flight of stairs, Lily gestured down a more narrow hallway, weaving her way through the dim place.

Feeling her way along the wall, she pushed aside the tapestry hanging over the entrance and peered inside ... but it was empty.

So either Tris wasn't moving as fast as anticipated, or he'd figured this was where he'd be sought first.

"Well, anyway, here's one spot that Tris tends to frequent. Obviously he's not here right now, but if you're looking for him, try here."

"Vot, like an candies?" Hans expression was genuine horror. He didn't know that he liked his fellow foreign students turning into sweets.

What sort of sweet would he be? Perhaps a danube wave cake? He was fond of those. He almost wanted to go on holiday that moment to Germany to retrieve one.

"I think ve should check in the commons of Ravenclaws. I haff a knowledge that ve may find him or Leif there." Hans surveyed Lily, then shrugged. "And vhy pass an chance to see more of your castle that is your own?"

Lily blinked. "Not ... like candies," she said, brow furrowing as she tried to figure out where that had come from. Lost in translation, she supposed.

She was still somewhat hesitant to head into the 'claw commons, and she tried to recall if anyone ever had said it was off-limits, or if people had simply assumed such.

It made sense though, right? That they weren't supposed to be in each other's commons?

And how much trouble was she going to get into if she got caught there?

But if someone brought her in, it wasn't like she'd snuck in or anything.

With a shrug, she figured the worst that happened was someone chasing her out and telling her head of house she was sneaking around into other commons. It wasn't like she was a stranger to detention.

Hans beamed when Lily made no more verbal objections. He turned on his heel and began to lead the way to the commons. He had paid special attention every time he ventured anywhere today to insure that he could make it back to the common room with little trouble.

"Vot is it you are doing vhen not visiting this tower?" Hans wondered, glancing sideways at the British girl.

Lily shrugged. "Homework. Hanging around with my cousins." She followed along after him, glancing around curiously. It wasn't like she'd never been over here before, but never with the intent to break into the 'claw commons.

"Getting into trouble, more often than not," she admitted with a little shrug. "We're not ... really going in there, are we?"

She frowned. "If Tris is in there, I'll never hear the end of this."

Lily shook her head. "No. I can find it myself," she admitted. "So, I guess I'll see you." She offered him a lopsided smile. Sure, she did a lot of things that pushed rules and whatnot, but she really didn't know what the protocol was about invading other people's commons.

She really didn't want to find out.

"It vos enjoyable chatting," Hans agreed, lifting one hand in a small wave. He was disappointed that she wouldn't continue along in their quest, but he supposed he understood. Rules were rules and some might have consequences he didn't yet know about.

But he would find out. Hans wanted to visit all of the common rooms before being shipped back home. He would speak to someone about the rules, then claim he had no idea it wasn't allowed if caught.

"Vhen you vish to visit, send me a letter," he added.
