RP: The Halls of Hogwarts
Characters: Ariana D, Neville
Time/Date: Evening, September 8, 2023
Location: Hogwarts, various hallways
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Ari slips out to explore some
Status: Complete

It was just after dinner (taken in the quarters she shared with her brother rather than the chaos of the Great Hall), when Ariana decided she was bored of the walls of the rooms she lived in. She hadn't been out in the castle much since the students had arrived, and not on her own.

Still, it seemed like she was about due for a prowl of the halls.

Glancing toward the room where her brother was, Ari slipped toward the door. She didn't honestly believe that Albus didn't know where she was going or what she was up to, but she'd pretend if he pretended.

With a sneaky little grin, Ariana slipped into the hallway. Barefoot and clad in wizarding robes, she trotted down the hallway and around the corner. Giggling as she ducked around it, she paused and peered back the way she'd come before deciding she was probably in the clear.

Content that there would be no immediate pursuit, Ariana began to roam through the hallways to see what she could see.

He'd forgotten how much paperwork there ended up being when school started again. Papers to grade, lessons to plan and replan and then scrap completely. Detention slips to write up. Did he mention lessons to replan?

... Fake dates to avoid thinking about...

It wasn't so much that he was nervous. Unlike the other dates he'd been on, he knew and trusted Ari. He just didn't know or trust himself very well. What if he did or said something foolish that got her upset with him? What if he got too... serious about the date aspect of it and forgot that it was fake, that the feelings on her part were purely act? In his mind, there was enough potential to ruin a perfectly good friendship that was almost enough to call the whole thing off.

He wouldn't, though. He just had to avoid thinking about it until it was too late to cancel, and then he could just show up at her door... and...

He stared down what he'd thought was going to be an empty hall, thinking he saw movement at the end of it. Shifting the (relatively) small stack of papers in his arm, he moved further down the hall, trying to see if it was a student out past curfew.

"Ariana?" he called out when he thought he recognized the silhouette, his eyebrows raised. He wondered what had The Littlest Dumbledore out for an evening stroll.

Ari gasped as she turned when someone called her name. She'd been engaged in a rather intense scrutiny of a very interesting painting when she'd been caught out. A sheepish grin tugged at her lips as she slipped her hands behind her back and rocked back on her heels slightly. The very picture of innocence.

"Good evening, Professor," she said politely and formally - aside from the silly little grin on her lips. She wasn't sure if the rules technically applied to her since she technically wasn't a student. She didn't worry about detention, and she didn't really worry about anything her brother might have to say - he likely knew right where she was, she imagined. Or could find her easily enough, if he put a bit of effort into it.

"How are you this evening?" she continued in her best 'I am up to nothing and doing nothing wrong' voice.

He smiled as he approached, but he too was of the mind that Prof... Albus likely knew where she was. He doubted there was anything that man didn't know about, really, so he wasn't overly concerned with sending her back to her room. He was amused, though, how innocent she was pretending to be.

"Good evening Ariana," he said with a warm smile. "I am quite well this evening. I was just heading up to my office to finish grading these papers. Just out for a stroll yourself?" he asked airily.

He did wonder if perhaps he should invite her back to his office for a cup of tea, or accompany her on her little stroll. Hogwarts halls were not as safe as they once had been, and if someone returned while she was out wandering... depending on how nice of a person they were... Well. She could probably use someone with a watchful eye, anyway.

Well, that was a slightly tricky question, wasn't it? She was out for a stroll in a manner of speaking, and she'd never been expressly and specifically forbidden from wandering the castle, but ...

"Albus knows where I am," she said, then paused. "Probably." Which she supposed was what Professor Longbottom was concerned about. She grinned up to him before she rocked back on her bare heels and giggled a little.

"I wouldn't want to keep you from your papers," she replied solemnly, nodding her head slowly a few times.

Neville nodded. "I'm sure he does - I wouldn't think to question it," he said with a nod, shuffling his papers to his other arm when she mentioned them. "Well that is very generous of you, but truth be told I'm not all that interested in rushing off to grade them. I'll admit I'm wasting time a bit," he smiled warmly at her.

"Would you like some company on your walk? Or maybe you'd like to come back to my office? I could make us some cocoa?"

Yes. Okay. He was far from subtle, and he wouldn't be toooooo surprised if she saw through his cherade, but now that he'd given it some thought, he really didn't feel comfortable letting her wander off on her own unless it was back to her room. And even then.

God knows that another Death Eater could burst out from behind a suit of armour at any moment now, given the rate things had been going the last little while.

Her head tipped to one side curiously. Professors admitted to wasting time? Blue eyes narrowed speculatively as she contemplated the truth of that. She supposed it was true enough; no one could work all the time, not even professors.

Tipping her head to the other side, rather like an intrigued dog attempting to figure out something new, she wondered at the invitation. She knew, in a sort of abstract 'this is bad' way that the halls were dangerous. She was also aware that her brother would keep her safe so she wasn't concerned - even if she should be.

"Are you trying to lure me to a safe place, professor?" she inquired in her best 'I'm not sure where this is going' voice. She weighed her options with that though - he could have offered to take her back to her room, and it might be interesting to see the inside of a staff member's room. So she shrugged and smiled. "All right," she agreed.

He laughed a little, though he'd known it wasn't subtle when he said it. "I'm glad you're agreeable. I'll admit, the thought of you out here on your own worries me a little given our circumstances, even if your brother does know where you are."

He turned slightly, indicating the direction they were heading to his office with a slight tip of his head, and waited for her to fall into step with him before he started moving in that direction, relieved that it hadn't been too much trouble to get her to tag along with him.

"How are your studies coming?" he asked, tilting his head towards her. "Are you working with your brother, or do you have a few tutors?" He thought he'd heard that she was in a catch up program like the other returnees were, but perhaps he was mistaken about that.

"Just working with my brother for now. We're working on control, and then when I'm ready, we'll go out for a wand, and after that I can start learning properly." She paused. "He thinks I might be able to have a wand by the holidays, but we'll see."

She was nervous about learning her magic, but it was better to at least know how to direct it when she had a fit of it rather than having it fly about willy-nilly and hurt people. Or worse.

"I'll have the other professors tutoring me ... once I'm safe." She made a slight face on the last word. She hated to think of herself as 'dangerous' because she never meant any harm. But bad things occasionally happened ... and sometimes, they were really, really bad things.

"Suppose I could start with the non-magical aspects of magic," she said before realizing how that sounded - but surely he knew what she meant. The things like History of Magic and Herbology; classes in which magic wasn't actually practiced, but theory was learned.

He nodded, figuring that made sense, and smiled when she said that she might have a wand by the holidays. "Congratulations! You must really be improving."

Really, in spite of the fact that it may be considered odd for someone her age to be so far behind, she really had come remarkably far in such a short amount of time.

He did chuckle a bit when she talked about the non-magical aspects of magic. He thought he understood what she meant - anything that wasn't wand-waving. "No harm in getting some theory before you move on to the wand stuff," he agreed. "If you wanted to, sometime after classes you're free to stop by the greenhouses and I could show you a few things," he offered. "If your brother says it's okay, of course." He was always willing to show people the various plants and things they had in the greenhouse, after all. And he didn't see any reason why she couldn't be allowed to learn that sort of thing even if she wasn't officially in classes yet.

"I'll ask him," she promised as she fell into step beside him as they headed to his quarters. Really, she saw no harm in learning about plants, though she did worry a little about having an episode down in the greenhouse and torching all of the plants or something equally bad. "I bet he won't mind," she decided.

Lapsing into silence for a moment, Ari wondered if there was anyone Neville was hoping came back, but she supposed it was rude to ask. Pausing to peer at a painting as they passed by, she engaged in something of a staring contest with the figure in it, giggling when they blinked first before she bounded back to Neville's side.

"What kinds of things are in the greenhouse?" she asked as they strolled along.

He did miss when she stopped to have a staring contest with a portrait, only noticing when she giggled and stopping so that she could catch up with him, making a mental note to keep a closer eye out. He was clearly not that great with young kids that weren't concerned about his 'Professor' status.

"What kinds of things..." he pondered out loud. "Are you asking about what types of plants? Because that's a pretty extensive list. Or are you meaning what sorts of things they do?" he quirked a grin. "Or both of those things?" he started running through their inventory, trying to come up with some plants that she might find interesting to hear about.

Reaching his office door, he juggled the papers in his arm to find his wand to unlock it, before pushing it open and bowing Ari inside. A few flicks of his wand set the kettle going and turned on the lights before he wondered about using so much magic in front of her, and whether that was rude of him.

"I don't know," she decided. "Whatever's pretty." She was accustomed to magic happening around her, even if Albus didn't actually use his wand much. She knew he was still doing magic, but she didn't think he liked his wand very much. Either way, she didn't think much of Neville using magic. He was a wizard, why shouldn't he?

Stepping into his room, she looked around curiously, watching as he set about making the tea. "What are some of your favorite things?" she prompted in the hopes of narrowing down his very extensive list.

Ari did wonder a little if Albus would come track her down, or if he'd simply trust Neville to escort her back when they were done with their chat.

"Pretty," he said thoughtfully, rifling through some of his cupboards, hoping to find biscuits. He did manage to find a box, and a clean plate, scattering the biscuits on to them before bringing it over to a table that was (basically) in the centre of a few chairs. He nodded to them, indicating she could have some if she was inclined, before he set about finding tea or cocoa. Or both. Possibly sugar and milk. Goodness, it had been some time since he'd had to entertain.

"Well, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder," he decided, finally finding mugs. "I mean, some people find the mandrakes... less than attractive. But once you get used to the howling screams, they really aren't so bad," he shrugged his shoulders. "I'm partial to the Flutterby bush, myself," he admitted. "I like to think that they're just a bit skittish, rather than..." he grinned a bit. "Well it shakes, when you go to prune it? I like to think that if you talk to it a bit it shakes less." He shrugged, a but amused with himself and the fact that he was admitting to that.

"You'll have to come down sometime to see which ones are your favorites," he teased. "In the meantime, did you want tea, or cocoa?"

Ari's nose crinkled slightly, but she'd heard that particular phrase tossed around a time or two, so she knew what he was saying.

Listening as he went on about some of the plants, Ari nodded. Flutterby bushes sounded pretty, and she wondered if they were at all like butterflies, or just happened to sound that way. It couldn't be a complete coincidence, right?

"If Albus doesn't mind," she agreed. "You'd probably have to escort me." But of course he would, if he was showing her around.

"Cocoa," she decided. She could have tea any time, but she didn't think they had any cocoa in the room.

He nodded, "Of course," he said, half to both statements really, but mostly to the comment about escorting her. "I'd be happy to, if you didn't mind the complete tour. You could even help me out with a few things, watering and such. I sometimes get students to do it for extra credit, but no one really needs extra credit so early into term." He frowned - he was getting ahead of himself, he thought. "That is, if you want to."

He smiled, stirring her cocoa and pouring a tea for himself before he brought it over to the table. "Sorry - I don't think I have any of the little marshmallows. I could send a note down to the kitchens, ask them to bring some up?"

He settled himself down, looking at her for a moment while he sipped at his own tea to make sure it was mixed to his liking before he asked, "So how are you enjoying yourself at the castle?" the hidden question there was something along the lines of how different it was for her, given that she was 100 some years in the future, and how odd it was to be spending so much time with people when she'd been isolated for so long, but he definitely thought those questions were prying too much, so he didn't ask them.

Ari listened and nodded. "Maybe," she said. "If I like it there." Which more or less translated into 'if I think the place isn't likely to trigger a fit where I'll destroy the entire place', but she couldn't well say that. Not really. She was trying to minimize references to her out of control powers.

She grinned and shook her head to the question about the marshmallows. "This is fine, thank you," she said politely.

To the question, she shrugged her shoulders lightly. "It's different. It isn't home and I miss Abe. We keep hoping he'll come back, too, like Albus and I did, but ..." she dropped her eyes slightly. "I guess there haven't really been any more since Bellatrix." None she'd known about, at any rate.

He thought he understood what she meant by 'if she liked it there' so he was content to leave it at that, and not press until she'd gotten more settled into the idea and talked it over with Albus.

He smiled, and sipped at his own tea, though he did turn more somber when she mentioned Aberforth, his eyes looking the other direction for a moment. Aberforth had done a great deal for him during his last year at school - a great deal for all of them - and his death had been hard on Neville.

"That would be nice," he agreed quietly. "And I don't think it's... over, really. It just seems to have died down a bit. I..." he hesitated. If no one had told her about the man that January had encountered in the halls, maybe it had been for a reason. "I don't imagine we're hearing about them all. The Ministry is likely withholding some of the stories from us, for our protection and to keep us from panicking. I wouldn't give up hope just yet." He offered her a warm smile.

"But shouldn't we know?" Ariana pointed out. "Shouldn't they be telling us when dangerous people come back? Everyone was worried about Bellatrix coming back, right? And it wasn't in the paper, but everyone here knows, so people are going to hear about it." Her brow furrowed, but she'd be the first to admit she didn't grasp politics at all - moreso in this new world.

It just seemed logical to her - if there was a threat, people should know about it.

She sipped her cocoa, looking around his room curiously as she swung her legs a little. Ariana supposed she could understand, kind of, how people might panic upon hearing about such dangerous people on the loose - but she was still of the mind they should know.

"I'm sure Abe will come find us if he comes back," she decided confidently. She wasn't sure where her brother had died, but regardless ... he'd come find them.

He nodded. "We should know," he agreed quietly. "But sometimes... people in power think that they know what's best for the people who are not in power. And they make decisions that are... perhaps not the smartest decisions. They want everyone to keep going about like nothing is wrong because they are not ready to deal with everyone panicking. It's selfish and wrong of them, but..." he shook his head. "I'm not sure that it's something that is going to change any time soon."

He did smile when she mentioned Abe would come find them. "I have no doubts of that," he agreed with a nod of his head. "The moment he heard that you were alive again, I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be anyone who could stop him from coming here to find you," he told her with a nod of his head. "In fact, wherever he is right now, I'm sure it's just that no one has told him that you're here, and that's why he hasn't returned yet. Give him a bit more time and he'll come back."

He really, really hoped that would end up being true. Not just for her sake either.

She giggled a little, nodding her agreement. She could relate to that. "People always thought they knew what was better for me." Her brow furrowed. "But I guess they were mostly right, probably," she amended in fairness.

They meant well, at any rate, even if their methods were slightly skewed.

Her lips quirked slightly. "Is he somewhere? Somewhere that he can remember? I don't remember being dead." What if there wasn't anything beyond the moment of their death? "Albus is younger," she continued. "What if Abe comes back at Albus' age and doesn't remember dying, either?"

Neville shook his head. "They may have known what was better, but the way they handled it was wrong," he told her sharply, though the sharpness was not directed at her, and entirely directed at the family that had locked her away and made her fear magic the way they had. "It's... a common theme with a lot of adults," he said with a wry grin. "we know what's right, but sometimes we don't know how to get there."

He thought about her questions, and how to answer them, sipping his tea to kill a bit of time. "I honestly don't know, Ariana. But I feel like... he must be somewhere, even if he isn't really... aware of it right now." He paused. "I'm not sure that you... are from a time when you were dead," he said finally. "Some of the returned individuals seem to remember their experiences before they died, and some - like James, Sirius and Remus for example - don't really because they're from a time when they weren't dead. And no one really seems to have the answers as to why that is."

No one that he had heard from that he really put much credence in, anyway.

He looked at Ari for a moment, and then he said, "I think that no matter what age Abe comes back at, he'll still come looking for you." He, personally, would prefer Abe from a later time - a time where he remembered what they'd gone through in the war - but he knew that it was silly to be hopeful like that with such a random returns going on.

"I don't remember dying," she admitted. "But I remember the fight. Albus and Abe and Gellert ... they were all fighting. I remember all the flashes, and ..."

She shrugged. She didn't remember actually dying though, so maybe she returned from just before she actually died and that was why she couldn't?

"I know," she agreed. "Once he finds out we were all dead, he'll know to come find us," she continued with the confidence of youth.

Taking another sip of her cocoa, she cocked her head curiously as she looked around the room again. Curious blue gaze played over the visible books and decorations, though she made no move to investigate them more closely.

"What do you do when you aren't grading papers or teaching classes?"

He closed his eyes briefly, not really liking the story. But he listened and nodded all the same. His thoughts mirrored hers, that maybe she'd simply been brought back from a time just before she died, or maybe she just... didn't remember because she was younger and didn't really have any thoughts to associate with dying.

He supposed it didn't really matter either way. The important thing was that she was here with them, and he smiled and nodded.

"I uh..." he said, looking around his room as he thought of how to answer her question. "Well, I'll be honest that I don't do a whole lot. I do read, a little," he gestured to a few piles of books that were scattered in various places around the room. "But mostly my passions lie with plants, and everything that comes with it. So grading papers, teaching classes, preparing for the next class - those are great ways to pass the time for me.

"How about you? What do you do when you're not studying?"

Ari smirked at the return question. "I wander around the castle when I can. I read a lot to try to catch up, but I guess that counts as studying," she reflected. "I color. And draw a little. I'm not very good at it, but I'll get better with practice."

Sipping at her cocoa again, she set the cup down on the table before continuing. "I guess if I can manage classes...I'll start next year, then I'll have homework and tutoring and everything else and probably won't have time for much else."

Or inclination. She'd overheard on occasion (and seen in the journals) conversations between girls, talking about boys. She thought she should be concerned about that soon - she was nearly that age. She just ... wasn't interested right now.

He smiled a bit. "You draw?" he asked curiously, though he supposed that made sense. There likely wouldn't be a lot else for her to do with the other students her age being stuck in class all day. She could wander the grounds endlessly but if she did want something else to do... well, reading writing and drawing were really the only options. "Do you draw people, or sceneray? The grounds and things?"

So all right, his knowledge of drawing was very limited.

He nodded to her statement that she'd try to start next year. "If there are other things you like, you'll find that you can make time for them," he told her with a nod. "But you might find that spending time with your classmates will take priority over other things, like classwork and tutoring," he offered her a wry smile.

"Different things. Sometimes just what's inside my head, like unicorns with wings and stuff. I saw a thestral, so I draw those." She paused, and grinned. "Kind of, anyway. I'm not that good at it. I can sort of draw a dragon from the book. I haven't tried to draw people yet, but maybe I'll start with trying to draw the portrait outside of our room."

Ari shrugged a little in response to his suggestion about spending time with her classmates. She was ... different from them, in more ways than one, and she wasn't completely certain they'd really get along or relate. She was really far out of the loops they ran in ... but she'd see how it went. Hopefully she at least got on with her dormmates. "We'll see," she said diplomatically before she took another sip of her cocoa.

He did wince slightly at her admission that she'd seen a thestral, and he wondered when he'd developed this protective feeling over her, and if it was something he would get over. She was obviously a stronger girl than people gave her credit for - including himself - if she could overcome the obstacles that had been placed in front of her - though that was hardly surprising, given that she was a Dumbledore. But all the same, it was still hard to accept when he got a reminder of something stories told him she'd experienced.

He nodded. "I'd like to see some, sometimes, if you wanted to show me?" he offered. "I've never been very good at drawing myself, but I do like looking at pictures," he gave her a warm smile.

Vaguely recognizing the attitude that accompanied the shrug of her shoulders, and her response to his statement about spending time with her classmates, he frowned and tried, "It's not always easy, meeting and spending time with new groups of people. But sometimes really good friends pop up from the most unexpected places," he encouraged.

"Maybe," she said. She'd only shown her brother, really, and she was a little nervous about showing them to someone else. Still, Neville seemed nice enough and she didn't think he'd poke fun or anything like that. "If I draw a really good one, I'll show you," she promised him as she shifted in her seat slightly.

"I don't know how to make friends," she admitted quietly as she stared toward the table. The last time she'd really interacted with anyone had been over half her lifetime ago, and that ... that had ended badly. "I'm a little scared, I guess. And everyone here already seems to have friends, 'cept maybe the first years ..."

She thought she might relate to them a little better though, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad path to pursue.

He smiled. "I'd like that," he said with a nod, listening while she admitted that she was nervous about making friends.

"I didn't know how to make friends either, when I first started," Neville admitted. In fact, he wasn't sure it was ever something that he'd really mastered. "But you do... bond over things, classes and Quidditch matches and study groups. So long as you're friendly and kind, you shouldn't have any difficulty finding people to talk to."

He did wonder though if maybe they could make an exception and put her in first year if that was where she wanted to be. It would be unorthodox, but he didn't imagine there was anyone who would really have a problem with it if that was how she wanted to go. It wasn't as though she was that much older, he didn't think. Just a few years. He wondered if Albus had considered speaking to Flitwick about it.

Ari didn't think she'd bond over any of those things. Maybe if there was an artistic student, she might find something in common with them, or she might learn enough about this new world to actually be able to have an informed discussion with children her own age.

"Do you think people who return should have new birthdays? It was just after my birthday when I died, but now it's September. So I missed a few months. Does that mean I'm not how old I am?" It was, she realized, a sort of random topic shift, but it followed along with her train of thought.

"What do you think, if someone just had their birthday, then died, but it was their birthday again right after they came back. Does it make them a year older, or do they skip a year?"

The sudden shift in topic surprised him, and he wasn't sure if she was avoiding the topic of making friends because she disagreed with him, or if it was just a coincidence, but he decided to go with it either way, his eyebrows raising in curiosity. "I'm not sure," he admitted. "I imagine if it was their birthday right when they came back, then they would skip a year. But if it was halfway between..." he paused, thinking about that.

"I suppose they could change their birthday if they really wanted to, but I don't think I would want to. I would rather pretend like I am the right age, you know? Wait for my birthday to come around again, and always know in the back of my mind that I was a couple of months older, or younger." He paused. "It may not be the most ideal solution, but... it's probably the least of the strange things that surrounds these returns, don't you think?"

He sipped his tea again, regarding her. "Those are my thoughts. How do you think we should handle it?"

"I don't know," she admitted. "I guess just staying the age you are, or came back at, and ... having your birthday on your proper birthday, so you don't confuse anyone. Or have to reregister yourself with the Ministry with a different birthday. I bet that would give them a headache, if people wanted to have their birthday be the day they came back or something."

Her brow furrowed as she thought about it before she shook her head to see if she could find another tangent to run down.

But it was getting late, and she was getting sleepy, and Albus might start to wonder where she was. "Suppose I should head back," she decided. "But thank you for the cocoa," she added as almost an afterthought.

He nodded. That made sense to him, and when she mentioned it was time she should be getting back, he looked around for a clock for confirmation before nodding his head again, moving to rise up from his own seat, planning on escorting her if she'd let him.

"Did you want me to..." he started to say before he realized that it didn't really matter to him one way or the other if she wanted him to accompany her, he was pretty sure he was going to anyway for her safety. "Did you mind if I escorted you?" he altered his words to.

He supposed it... didn't really matter, one way or the other. She was just going back to her room, likely nothing would happen, but he would feel better if she had someone escorting her all the same.

Ari sort of smirked when he corrected his phrasing. She'd assumed, given his concern earlier, that he would insist on accompanying her back to her quarters.

So she shrugged. "If you aren't too busy. I'd hate to take away time from your papers," she teased a little as she slid out of her seat and stretched and yawned.

She really was tired, but she kept herself busy between the books and roaming the grounds when she could. "I'm sure my brother would appreciate knowing I was escorted by a professor."

"I'm sure you don't really need to be," he assured her with a smile. "But after recent events with the returnees - and given the battles that have happened recently - it's probably best that no one walk the halls alone." Yes, he was aware of the paradox of how would he get back to his office, and was already preparing responses.

They weren't very good though, because he didn't disagree that he shouldn't be walking back alone either.

Holding the door of his office open, he waited for her to exit so that he could take her back to her room, vaguely amused that he'd managed at how much time he'd managed to waste speaking to her this evening.

"I'm sure my brother will be pleased to hear that other people are looking out for me," Ari said as she lifted her chin slightly. Stepping out into the hall, she glanced up to Neville before lifting one hand.

Perhaps it was a little presumptuous, but if he was escorting her, he might want to hold her hand to ensure she didn't stray too far away for the short walk to her quarters.

She did wonder if her brother was going to have something to say about this, but ... well, she'd find out once she got back.
