RP: Girls will be Girls
Characters: Lily, Cas
Time/Date: Afternoon, September 6
Location: Diagon Alley, various shops
Warnings/Rating: None
Summary: Lily and Cas try to catch up with the fashion of the times
Status: Complete

Lily had already informed Severus of her plans, so she forewent the note this time. After popping to Diagon Alley and collecting Cas, she regarded the various clothing stores that lined the Alley contemplatively.

She honestly had no idea where to start. Jamie had pointed out LilyLu's stack of fashion magazines and she'd flipped through a few of those. She thought she'd look decent in any number of the outfits, but she wasn't sure she could imagine wearing them out in public.

But, between herself and Cas, surely they could settle on some sort of attire that was both club-appropriate and didn't offend their out-of-date senses.

To be entirely frank, Cas had no idea what she was going to find. She only knew she needed more clothes; she had purchased absolute basics, but nothing beyond that. Having spent a few days in the poub of the Leaky, people watching, Cas had come to the conclusion that, while fashion certainly hadn't been blown to hell, it was largely foreign to her -newly outdated- sensibilities. Her shirt, the one she'd arrived in, already a hand-me down in 1980, was now fifty years old. Obviously, she wouldn't find what she'd lost.

"Lily," Cas started. "Where are we even going to start?"

"I have absolutely no idea, love," Lily decided. "Suppose we can start window shopping and venture into the clutches of the shops that have things that look interesting. And ... slightly more modest than the norm seems to be. Have you seen some of the things people are wearing?"

Even her granddaughter had been wearing things Lily considered indecently revealing. It had been a while, of course, and she understood changing times, but ... really.

"I want to pick up something for this weekend," she admitted. There was an odd swirl of emotions with that. She had no intentions of actually courting or dating, but even teasing at it felt like the worst betrayal of James. It was irrational, she knew. She couldn't have James and she needed to move on. But this was just a bit of fun, a chance to unwind. Nothing more, nothing less.

"I know! In public, no less. It's one thing if you want to go about the house like that, but to go out?Where there are all sorts of people? I would never! I may be a prude, but I certainly don't want everyone to see almost everything. Besides, my inner healer's having fits about how difficult it would be to keep all that extra skin sterile. Why you'd need to, I dunno." Cas picked at the cuticles of her thumbs as she continued. "I'm in the market for party clothes, and a few decent work things. Whether I'm the mad shopwitch or a healer, I'm relatively certain going in in pajamas is bad form."

Cas was looking forward to going out; it would be her first time enjoying the night life since Hogwarts, now half-a-lifetime ago. Going out without fear of Voldemort would be a refreshing experience, and a fun one too, no doubt.

"No, I agree. It's ... I suppose it's the times, but ..." she trailed off and grinned. "Imagine I'd give Sev a heart attack if I showed up at the house in something like I've seen some people wearing." She thought she might try it as a joke; show up in whatever she'd bought to go to the club in.

"Think it'd be making a statement if we showed up in our PJs," Lily decided. "Granted, the statement would be 'we're old ladies who need our sleep'," she concluded with a grin.

Strolling along the Alley, she paused every now and again at windows to peer in. "Suppose we should buy the responsible clothing first," she said as she grinned over to Cas.

"I suppose you're right on all counts," Cas grinned. "We don't want to show up looking like --- looking like relics!" Relics. Merlin, that was a strange thought. She was twenty going on sixty-four come next June, gawking at fashion that showed more than she'd ever want displayed in public."Can't be looking like the old ladies we are, now. Have to look fit, trim, and brimming with energy! And skin, apparently." Cas finished, staring into a shop window at one particularly revealing blouse. Sucking on the inside of her cheek, Cas turned to face her friend. "I don't mean to sound prudish, but does no one believe in modesty?"

"Relics," Lily echoed. But it was true enough; if they'd lived, they'd be into their sixties by now. She'd have seen her son grow up. Been around for the births of her grand children.

"It's so ... weird when you think about it," she murmured to Cas. "This ... being back thing."

Stirred out of her thoughts by Cas' question, Lily grinned. "Guess we'll have to reintroduce the concept to the world," she decided.

Peering into the window as well, Lily gestured. "The one beside it isn't so bad," she pointed out.

"Who ever thought I'd be championing modesty?" Cas mused. "As for being back, it's surreal, even more so because I didn't realize I'd been ... would have been gone. I mean, until I ended up here, if you had asked me where I thought I'd be at sixty-four, I'd have told you old, running the ward, and with someone to spend my life with. Hopefully," Cas added.

Staring at the blouse, Cas had to agree; it was even fairly pretty."It's actually sort of nice," she added. "Want to go in?"

"You'll find someone this time around," Lily assured Cas. "Maybe we'll find some equally modest wizards in the club who'll be interested in a couple of relics like us," Lily teased.

She, really, wasn't interested in casual dating. Not yet, anyway. It was too much, too soon, but that didn't mean Cas shouldn't have that kind of fun.

"We should go in," Lily agreed as she shifted past the window to hold the door open for Cas with a grin. Sweeping her hand, she waggled her brows playfully. "After you."

Cas grinned at her friend. "Do those things even exist? I'm trying to picture any of the boys we knew ... know ... knew ... going for a relic." Cas wrinkled her nose; she hated this verb tense confusion. It made simple conversation a bloody nuisance.

"Why, thank you," she said, stepping in. "Let's see about buying decent clothes to woo decent boys and get decent jobs."

"Well ..." Lily tilted her head to one side, but it wasn't exactly as though she had much of an argument to that. "Remus might have," she decided firmly as she followed Cas into the store.

This was nice ... just having a friend to shop with and gab with and to be around. Someone her own age, more or less, who remembered most of her life. It was refreshing.

Content enough, Lily drifted into the shop. So they'd shop and chat and gossip and joke, and begin their new lives in this new world.

"Remus, Remus, Remus, who's now what? Sixteen? Seventeen?" Cas asked, fingering the fabric of the blouse that had initially caught her eye. "Hopefully, he isn't one of a kind..." Cas trailed off. Grabbing the same blouse, this one hanging next to the window, she held it up. "What'd you think, Lils?"
